Ignoring all the books on my shelves to start the library ebook Reese Witherspoon picked this month #reesesbookclub

A study in contrasts - hints of something different, something intriguing. Like Monet in Givenchy. Followed by long swathes of the mind numbingly ordinary. Like me trying to paint anything.

Had a brilliant quote though - “the first scents man ever made were meant to burn. Per fumare - through the smoke.”

I read through this week's section really quickly! I didn't want to stop reading!
#TheScentKeeperBuddyRead @Soubhiville

CoffeeNBooks I was surprised to find out the circumstances of why Emmeline and her dad were at the island, if the information she found online is correct. I definitely want to keep reading to find out more about that. I hope everything works out for Emmeline and Fisher. 6d
Hooked_on_books I wasn‘t surprised to find he was hiding out, but I had thought the blue-topped vial was her mother‘s scent. Now that we know she may still be alive, maybe, maybe not. I hope being on the island will be healing for Emmeline and Fisher and that it doesn‘t turn into some sort of Blue Lagoon. 6d
Hooked_on_books This book is not at all what I was expecting from the description, but I‘m really enjoying it! 6d

TheHeartlandBookFairy I loved this book, enjoy it! 5d
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I still think the blue topped vial may be related to her mother. I got caught up in the story and accidentally read 2 extra chapters 😁. I‘m loving it! Can‘t wait to see what mystery is revealed in part 3. 5d

Trying to read a bit tonight for #TheScentKeeperBuddyRead but I‘ve barely started & I should be at pg 154 tomorrow.😬 Waiting for my houseguests to come back from Kauai tonight & my napping reading buddy makes me want to go to bed & it‘s only 7:15 PM. I have a pork butt in the slow cooker to feed them kalua pork sliders tomorrow & it smells good & I don‘t eat meat.😆

Max🐱says he is ready for our company to go home on Tuesday. 😉😼 #catsoflitsy

Crazeedi My kitties arent much into company either, and actually I kinda understand, lol. Is it dark yet? If so it's legal to get under covers!😉 6d
Soubhiville Igor agreed with Max- my Mom is here for the weekend and he has spent the whole time in my bedroom. He‘d like his couch snuggle time back now! 6d
Soubhiville Also, I‘m also finding the reading sections racing by. I accidentally read past 154 without thinking about it because I got caught up in the story. 6d

#ReeseWitherspoon Book Club February 2020 pick

I found this to be a very unusual book with a unique subject matter. At times I found it to be completely fascinating but at other times, I was a little confused. Maybe it was just my state of mind as I was reading it. It was still a good book, just not mind-blowing.

Reece picked a much better book this month from last month. The writing was lyrical and at the beginning it felt like reading a fairy tale. It is a coming of age story to savor. If you like The Language of Flowers you will like this book.

Unique underlying assumption in this story about the sense of smell being the strongest emotional trigger. I got a bit tired of the primary character Emmeline‘s voice but the author herself had some truly wonderful descriptive moments. The book ended before I wanted it to. We learn about why Emmeline is narrating the story but I really wanted to know what happened to Colette, Henry and Fisher. #hellosunshine

marleed I liked it too. But I agree, there was something in secondary character development missing. 1w

I'm enjoying this book so far! I love the descriptive writing!
#TheScentKeeperBuddyRead @Soubhiville

CoffeeNBooks I'm wondering if Jack the Scent Hunter is Emmeline's dad. I was very curious about the boxes of things that Emmeline's dad told her came from the mermaids- I thought maybe they were things that had just washed ashore, but I am more curious now that I know they were brought there based on what Emmeline's dad requested. Who exactly are Henry and Colette, and what's the real story behind why John and Emmeline are on the island? 2w
Soubhiville I also feel like the scent hunter might be her dad. I hope we find out why the scents are fading, and what the heck is in that one blue stoppered bottle? Did the machine only stop working because her dad stopped requesting paper for it? I had a hard time stopping my reading when I came to the end of this week‘s section! 2w
Soubhiville This book is quite different from her others! I was kind of surprised when the chapters didn‘t switch points of view, and that the plot continues for multiple chapters. 🙂 2w

Oh how I absolutely loved this book. It had everything I look for in a great story, pulling me in immediately. I loved watching Emmeline grow up from a curious little girl to a woman figuring out who she is in this world. There's a whimsical beauty in The Scent Keeper that I savored the entire time, wishing the book would never end. There a definitely some serious and heartbreaking moments here but somehow the writing is kept light throughout.

This book is a gift that I did not expect. The story is one of the most unusual and imaginative I‘ve read in years, and the characters by turns fascinating and exasperating. I first became interested in the properties of scent, particularly of how scent can trigger memories, when caring for an elderly relative in her last days. Scent was a trigger for her and she shared the loveliest memories with her family during those difficult days.

robinb Loved this one too! ❤️ 7mo

Whoa, this book. Where do I even begin? Engaging, curious, strange, infuriating, confusing, heartwarming, hopeful. These are just some of the words I can easily throw out there when I think of "The Scent Keeper" by Erica Bauermeister. It has elements I tend to gravitate toward in books: Magic, nature, magical realism, connecting to one or more of the five senses. [Rest in comments] #booksbrewsandbooze ?: Via Erica Bauermeister, IG

booksbrewsandbooze What a journey this book takes the reader on. Some of it doesn't make a lick of sense at all to the reader, but not in a way that makes the book hard to read or alienating. Rather, it's just like what would happen if we all took a tumble into our family's past. Not all of it would make sense and we may always wonder the age-old question: Why? Why did they do that? 9mo
booksbrewsandbooze "The Scent Keeper" touches on so many different themes: Abandonment, sacrifice, ancestors, the familial burdens and triumphs we carry with us, the power of scent and its ties to memories, the families who takes us in and love us, living in the past, refusing to see what's in front of you, creating new lives, shunning old lives and coming back full circle. 9mo
booksbrewsandbooze "No matter how far wrong you've gone, you can always turn around." ~ Gil Scott-Heron 9mo
See All 12 Comments
booksbrewsandbooze Is everything neatly tied up in a bow and all questions answered? Nope. But that's reality for you and I'm grateful for that in books because it helps us feel more connected to the book and its characters. There are mysteries in our lives, whether it's a long overdue conversation that doesn't happen, an apology unsaid, an 'I love you' never said out loud but always felt, a question of "why."
9mo
booksbrewsandbooze The mystery makes me want to know more. I want to know what happens to Emmeline, Fisher, the Secret Cove, her mom, her journey into healing. Insights abound in this book and I want to go through it again and underline them, sometimes for the insight and sometimes simply for the beautiful way Bauermeister strings words together. 9mo
booksbrewsandbooze I yearn for a continuation of the story. It would be so neat to follow the characters into what happens next.

I really wanted to love this book, but I struggled with some aspects. I would definitely read this author again, but this was just so-so for me. The writing is great, but I felt the character lacked consistency and the back half declined from the very strong middle.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Netgalley and Erica Bauermeister for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.

This book was simply beautiful! I know it will linger with me for a long, long time. It is a coming-of-age story, and the sense of smell plays a prominent role here. I hesitate to say much more because the heavenly words/imagery of Emmeline‘s story should be discovered and savored on one‘s own. At once, heartwarming and heartbreaking. I look forward to reading this author‘s backlist as writing like this is rare and wonderful. 🔽
