Wilder Girls
Wilder Girls | Rory Power
"Wilder Girls is so sharp and packs so much emotion in such wise ways. I'm convinced we're about to witness the emergence of a major new literary star." --Jeff VanderMeer, author of the New York Times bestseller Annihilation A feminist Lord of the Flies about three best friends living in quarantine at their island boarding school, and the lengths they go to uncover the truth of their confinement when one disappears. This fresh, new debut is a mind-bending novel unlike anything you've read before. It's been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her. It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything. But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there's more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true. "Stunningly unique and with bold, atmospheric writing, Wilder Girls hooked me from the very first page. The eeriness of Raxter Island permeates every scene, and Rory Power's characters are fierce and honest, blazing from the pages. This is a groundbreaking speculative story--brutal and beautiful, raw and unflinching. I adored this book." --Emily Suvada, author of This Mortal Coil

The first act of this book has been great. The story reads like a cross between The Lord of the Flies and Jeff VanderMeer‘s Annihilation. I‘m really enjoying it a lot. Been too long since reading a book in print only, instead of as an audiobook, has hooked me this much. #YA #RoryPower #WilderGirls #scifi

This was one of my most anticipated books and I just did not love it.The writing was able to pull me in, the story was entertaining enough to finish. The middle took a weird turn for me and never seemed to come back. I didn't like the ending although it does leave room for drawing your own conclusions. Some of the characters you are to believe they are resourceful, cunning, smart seemed to believe things that they were told at face value.

Started Rory Power‘s Wilder Girls while hanging out with Wicket. Been continuing it at work. I‘m halfway through chapter two. This book is some bat-shit crazy mess (the good kind, so far). Seriously, this book is truly wild. #WilderGirls #RoryPower #YA #DogsOfLitsy

Love this cover but the story was just so-so for me. The Tox is gross so that was fun. 🤣

allthingskayla I felt meh about it. Interesting concept, but I think there is a lot of improvement that could have been made to make it better and have a tighter story. 6d

I really loved the idea of this book, but I want a fan of the execution. The info dump at the end fell flat to me. The ending left it open for a sequel, but I felt like that ending is when the boom was going to start to pick up.

Always a disappointment when amazing covers happen to underwhelming books 😩

The atmospheric creepiness and the body horror of the Tox-infested girls on Raxter Island were incredibly effective in that I was super grossed out all the time but the plot and the choppy narration just d r a g g e d. The minimal backstory explanation and abrupt ending really cemented this as a pan for me. Sad, because the concept had a lot of potential!

rretzler I was on the fence about getting this book and ultimately did not. Sounds like I made the right choice. 6d

We‘ve been in our new house (!!) for two months now, officially, and we‘re down to unpacking the last handful of boxes. It‘ll feel so good once they‘re unpacked at last but all I want to do is keep reading this! It‘s not a perfect book by any means but I do really want to know what‘s going on with the girls and the Tox 💀

With the craziness that had been going on earlier this summer. I hadn‘t been reading as much. So I have started a habit of reading before work. Still working on a regular yoga practice 🤷🏻‍♀️I‘m enjoying the story of this one and I know some have said it can get gory. So far it‘s been safe to read while I eat my breakfast!

Not sure I would coin this a “feminist Lord of the Flies” where the only similarities are stranded on an island and a group of the same gender, but it‘s a good read, even if the ending leaves some people hanging.

4.5 ⭐️
Whoever started the rumor that this is a feminist twist on Lord of the Flies is very wrong. The only thing it has remotely in common with Lord of the Flies is that there are boats and people on an island. The only reason it isn‘t a five star for me is because I don‘t plan to constantly reread this - although I can see myself rereading it in October in a couple of years from now. This book was a wild ride, and I NEEDED to know why and how it would end! Girls in a boarding school on an island off the coast of Maine, when a virus hits and they get quarantined. The virus affects all of them in different, gruesome ways and many of the girls die before the resolution. I didn't find the main characters very likeable, but it didn't affect my reading enjoyment that much. ⬇️

rjsthumbelina The descriptive writing and lush setting were all I needed with the danger and mystery of the Tox! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2w

Book 1/6 completed for #bfcr3 After doing my morning walk of 3 1/2 miles, in the disgusting humidity that is the south right now, I cooled off and finished this book. I totally see why Jeff Vandermeer is quoted on the back of the book, as its got some serious Annihilation vibes. There are connections to climate change as well. Bonus points for strong female protagonists and LGBTQ representation. A solid 3 1/2 ⭐️. #bfc #TeamFitLit

2019 Book 32: A few unanswered questions remain after reading this one. It was definitely gruesome in places as a disease called the Tox overcomes an island of girls at school. I‘m always annoyed when teenage characters figure things out that doctors couldn‘t figure out through the whole book. I will recommend this book to my students though, because they‘ll like the gruesome parts. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Clare-Dragonfly I loved this book but there was absolutely nothing realistic about the medical aspects! 2w

If I had to sum this one up in one word it would be weird. I enjoyed it, but found myself shaking my head at the oddity of some things. And if you aren‘t one for cliffhangers don‘t even come near this. I seriously felt like I was running full speed and hit a brick wall the way it abruptly ended. All in all is was good, not great. 3.5-4 🌟

This was a solid written book with tons of body horror but an unsatisfying, unfinished ending. I loved the characters and I wanted it to go somewhere and it just didn‘t which I guess that‘s okay. It‘s not a book for everyone with horrid characters and missing eyes. The horror element is very Annihilation mixed with a female Lord of the Flies at boarding school and if you like those novels I suggest this one too. Overall a solid 3 star novel.

This was an engrossing novel, I really enjoyed the horror element of this novel and the suspense. I did not like the fact that there seemed to be no conclusion. the only thing that could solve this problem is a sequel, so I hope there is one. I liked the plot and the idea of the tox. I also liked the characters. I can't wait to discuss this at the book club next month

Third book finished for #24in48 ♥️ Amazing. Unexpected and brilliantly written. It‘s the type of book that‘s worth analyzing & discussing, as I truly feel it‘s an allegory. Astounding symbolism. The “Lord or the Flies” similarity is light in the way of survival. TBH, I felt more “A Separate Peace” & “Picnic At Hanging Rock” vibes. I can chalk up the lower ratings to it being very grotesque at times, & not being fully what‘s expected.

Quarantined on an island, the girls from the Raxter school are told to sit tight and wait for a cure but things aren't going so well anymore...

I always enjoy a boarding school setting for a story but Rory Power really takes it to another level. Fun and horrifying all at once, I could easily see Wilder Girls being a Netflix movie that I would devour like I did this book. A pretty quick but intense read. I definitely recommend it.

2/5⭐

I'm really underwhelmed and I'm quite disappointed. I was expecting to like this book a lot, since people describe it as a femal Lord of the Flies. I understand the comparison, but I didn't really like the story. The writing was pretty cool, gruesome horror stuff sometimes which was impressive, but it just wasn't for me. Maybe I'm growing out of YA books? Maybe not, I don't know, but this one didn't do it for me, sadly.

I thought this book was just okay. I don't know if I didn't really connect to it because it was compared to Lord of the Flies and I have never read the book before. I was hooked almost from the first page but the more I read it I just felt so so about it. I also didn't really care for the ending. I felt like it didn't finish the story. So I don't know if there is sequel coming out of not.

First off, I appreciate the fact that Litsy‘s photo editor has enough tools that I can take a terribly lit photo of the title page and turn it from a disaster into something like this.

Secondly, yesterday was one hell of an adventure, and included my very first visit to Powell‘s, here in Portland.

And third—I‘ve been so fucking hyped for this book for months, and it‘s finally time to devour the entire damn thing.
