Beautiful prose and a devastating but real picture of grief and loss. Nothing like I was expecting but truly excellent. I saw the ending coming but still hard hitting. I expected more of a YA thriller but it‘s more of a mystery. Shows that even the super rich are not exempt from horrific tragedies.

I almost bailed on this book. I also guessed the twist at the end, but the ending does make up for the rather slow first half.

While I think the plot was alright, the way this book was written just didn‘t appeal to me. I didn‘t like how it tried to be poetic at times or how some of the dialogue was placed. Basically, the narrator struggles to remember an accident, and she thinks being with her friends will help. She calls the group of them The Liars, but never explains why. In bonus content, the author stated the reason got cut from the novel - then why keep the nickname?

BkClubCare Ha! I had different issues with this book but I was amazed how hot it became. Anyway, different strokes, right? I panned it, too. 2mo
BriannaT @BkClubCare Happy to know I‘m not the only one! Yeah I don‘t think it deserved the hype, but I guess I got it for 20% off at Target for a reason lol 2mo

This book is about a teenage girl in New York who goes through a traumatic event at her family‘s island. Unfortunately she is unable to remember the event and no one will tell her what actually happened as it is believed that it will be best for her to remember it on her own. So she returns to the island around 2 years later to find out the truth. Along her journey to find the truth, she discovers her own family‘s faults and how they

elayna.vucurevich are not as perfect as they seem to be. It‘s the end of the book it is discovered that Cadence, they main character and her three cousins had burnt down their grandfathers house in an attempt to fix their problems. Unfortunately the three cousin all perished in the fire, which was the secret that everyone was hiding from her. It was also during this night that she sustained her head injury. If you like books that deal with teenagers who go through 2mo
elayna.vucurevich traumatic events then you will like this book. The point of view in this book is first person and it is told through Cadences point of view. Through her point of view the audience learns about events from her perspective and how her family isn‘t as perfect as they appear to be. 2mo
elayna.vucurevich The author uses techniques such as expressing Cadence's feelings and thoughts to establish that the story is told through her eyes. 2mo
elayna.vucurevich I would give this book a 6/10 because it got kind of boring and repetitive but I liked the plot twist at the end. 2mo

Cadence Sinclair comes from a wealthy, seemingly perfect family who spend their summers on a private island. Her summers were once filled with playing with her cousins and spending time with Gat; who she is in love with. However it all changes when Cadence has an accident and can‘t remember what happened due to the traumatic brain injury. However her mother won‘t tell her what happened so she returns to the island, determined to find out the truth

elayna.vucurevich If you like to read books that are based on teenagers and the hardships they go through you will like this book. A them in this book is the desire to find out the truth. Cadence is not only determined to find out the truth about what happened the night of her accident but also why her family acts the way they do. Such as why her grandpa suddenly built a new house or why her one aunt denies going for a walk in the middle of the night. 3mo

This book was a heart wrenching, page turner. I read this in one sitting, and since I was hunched over a book for a few hours, my back hurts. But it‘s all worth it. I could sense that there was a huge plot twist coming up, and when it came, it blew me away. I have to say, at times, the ages of the characters and the way they behave don‘t match, but other than that, this was an absolutely brilliant book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Boy am I glad to be done with this one. I tried reading a while back, gave up, tried recently, nearly gave up again… until I read some of the (raving) reviews - something abt a plot twist. Curiosity got the best of me. And yeah, ok, it was good. Now that the books over, I can appreciate the story and ponder on some of the themes, which are interesting. But ooooft I didn‘t quite enjoy the style, and I sure as heck did not enjoy the protagonist.

GondorGirl This book is certainly not for everyone. Hopefully your next read is better suited! 3mo

I've been told that I always pick dark books, and after loving this one, as much as I do, I can't argue that. I can not recommend this book enough; just when you think you have it figured out, you realize you don't. A true coming-of-age story. I loved the way the author used the various fairy tales as a way to tell the tragic story. Seriously....if you haven't read this book, do it now!

While I did predict the twist about halfway through, it didn‘t take away from my enjoyment. I thought this was beautifully written and it tugged at my heartstrings. I also agree with the people that say you should go into this one as blind as possible.

I've loved E. Lockhart for a long time & I'm a fan of her style. The characters & setup were good, but the plot (while still enjoyable) was pretty predictable. Still, I found it to be a quick & easy read. It needs to be clearly recommended as a mystery contemporary, not a thriller. So...if you enjoy E. Lockhart, don't let the haters sway you. Read this novel. Just remember...it's YA, NOT a thriller, & the twist is good but won't blow you away.

GondorGirl I'll be honest, I didn't see the twist coming and it gutted me (I mean, I knew there was going to be a twist, just not what it was). I ugly cried so hard I snotted on my cat. 😅 7mo
ErraticElle @GondorGirl I think if I had read it when it was first published, this likely would have been my reaction. There was just too much scuttlebutt around it for me to go in without being a bit overly suspicious. I wasn‘t ever specifically told the plot, but I think something must have given me ideas. 7mo

This book took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting that ending at all.
I like how Cadence tells the story of their childhood up to when they became teenagers.
I truly belief the best way to read this book in going in blindly. Following the story as Cadence tells it with her three best friends. Mirren, Johnny and Gat.
A story about secrets, heartbreaks and a terrible truth.

I heard so many good reviews on this book, so I thought I would give it a read. I was expecting an eventful book that I would not be able to put down. The book was the opposite. I started reading it in the summer but put it down because it wasn‘t sticking with me.

sarahtalbot The characters were well developed and the overall tone was getting me through. The plot took a very long time to develop and there was almost to much going on every chapter. Overall, if you like a book about family struggles, adventures, mystery and love with no boundaries this is the book for you. 8mo
LibrarianRyan I agree. I was not into this book at all. But I find that to be true of all E Lochart books I have read. Everyone else loves it and I'm just like ehhh. 8mo
sarahtalbot The main theme of the novel is the consequences surrounding one‘s mistakes. It is centred on the seemingly perfect, wealthy Sinclair family who spend every summer on their private island. Not every summer is perfect. During summer 15 Cadence had an accident. 2 years later her cousins aka The Liars re-emerge to prompt her to remember the accident. (edited) 8mo

I def think I missed a lot in listening to it over Audible as opposed to reading it. Still, the narrator confused me. Like, metaphors & symbolism are great —so long as it‘s clear that‘s what it is. (Ie. I spent the 1st half of the book thinking her dad had literally shot her). Though, the twist haunts me, so , extra points for that. #20in4

BookDragonNotWorm The twist completely blindsided me and made me cry! Totally unexpected. 9mo
Jess_Franzino @BookDragonNotWorm Yeah. The twist has hurt me. Like, I had a literal bad dream last night from the twist 😢 I think I missed a lot of this book by listening to it rather than reading it, sadly. But that twist. Omg. 9mo

?/10 this book was SO hyped and I feel a little dissatisfied? Idk it feels like a cop out with the supernatural element but it made me cry nevertheless. Still heartbreaking, but I just also feel like they built up so much suspension to the fire and there are holes? It just speeds by I feel like. It‘s hard to explain. I also feel like the author relies to much on the whole “we are different people in the summer” to not explain the characters.

mschenk Then again as I‘m thinking about it, the whole we don‘t know anything ab eachother outside of this could‘ve been because they are literally dead haha. But I‘m just conflicted w this one. 9mo
magyklyXdelish The thing I don‘t understand is why they couldn‘t just douse the house and when they are safely outside then throw in a match? That part seemed weird. But I still have it a 5 🙈 4mo

We Were Liars is well written, suspenseful story that focuses on the privileged Sinclair family. It is told from the point of view of Candence Sinclair Easton. It had three other characters, Johnny, Gat and Mirren and these four formed the Liars. All the characters are quite layered and complex. They appear to be one thing but as the story progresses, we find there is another side to them that we hadn't seen before.

I was actually really excited to read this book. However, for me, when I started the book it was really hard to actually like any of the characters or relate to them - even the main protagonist. However as the story progressed it, it actually started to make sense and the story started to fall into place. The story is a great premise, but it couldn‘t have been better had there been more relatable subjects. 3/5 🌟from me. 🌞

One of my biggest pet peeves in a thriller is when the twist is a supernatural element. It rubs me the wrong way every single time and that's all I'm going to say.
But, I did really enjoy the fairy tale retellings. I thought they were clever and it kept the story intriguing. In conclusion, I do think this book would be a great read for a lot of people but due to my circumstances and preferences, I couldn't love it.
