I really liked how Fernando‘s story was interwoven throughout. Like Vanja‘s mother, the story floats around rather than staying in one place, and that worked for me.

It was slow to start, and the different timelines and character backstories were a bit uneven, but in the end I didn't care. The writing was so beautiful that I just loved it. One of those times that I wish a book was longer.

Coming of age, finding family, immigration, revolution.

I'm so glad that #FoodandLit inspired me to pick this one up. I definitely would have missed it without "travelling" to Brazil with my fellow Littens.

alisiakae @Texreader açaí is indigenous to multiple countries in central and South America, but I think the açaí bowl concept originated in Brazil. Not ? sure though. The consistency and taste is similar to a smoothie, my juice bar blends it with almond milk, banana, and berries (at least for this version). 3y

Texreader Since I don‘t like smoothies I‘m fairly certain this wouldn‘t work for me. BUT my daughter is now convinced! She said I could get her one and I could take a pic for Litsy! 3y

DebinHawaii They were (and still are) huge in Hawaii—starting with the surfers here & now in most coffee & juice shops. I used to eat one every Friday when I worked from my local coffee shop a couple of days a week. I need to have one to celebrate Brazil—it‘s a great reason! 😋😉 3y

so-so

The main thread is a sense of belonging and strange moments that accompany the life in new,foreign country. This aspect is very well represented through 3 main characters, who carry their foreignness in their own way. The weakness of the story is its structure. The story of the girl is constantly interrupted in a very rough way with a story about the past, and such a way of narration is ineffective and intrusive. Strong premise,but weak execution.

Simona @Emilymdxn Maybe I‘m too strict ... Have you read Compass by M.Enard from last year (I think) Man Booker International? Captivating story, rich prose and abundance of historical facts which are just placed between the main story, shredding reading rhythm into pieces. I really don‘t like that... 6y

Emilymdxn No I haven‘t! Last year was my final year at university so I did nothing but study, I barely read anything at all! That does sound like a difficult format - I get testy with over experimental prose too 6y
