At the end of a long, dark night Detectives Rene Ballard and Harry Bosch cross paths for the very first time. * * * * * Detective Rene Ballard is working the graveyard shift again, and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find that an older man has snuck in and is rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is none other than legendary LAPD detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out, but eventually Bosch persuades her to help and she relents. Bosch is investigating the death of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway who was brutally murdered. He crossed paths with her devastated mother while working a previous case, and Daisy's story has seized hold of him. I messed up, I read this Bosch out of order.Still enjoyed it , but I didn‘t read the intro book for Renee Ballard that comes before this one too. 🙄The one before this one was used on the TV series , so I know what happened anyway, unless they changed it. 😄Ballard & Bosch work well together after their initial suspicions wear off. Another cold case murder & a San Fernando gang related investigation.

monkeygirlsmama I've done that before with a different author/series. Whoops! 3mo
Leftcoastzen @monkeygirlsmama I seldom do that , but if that‘s the worst thing that‘s happening, I call it a win!😁 3mo

I like the characters in this one a lot, but the story doesn't quite work for me. A couple of the coincidences seem a little off, and some of the smaller subplots are dropped too abruptly. Maybe this is the kind of series where these are picked up in other books?

Photo is a thistle I saw when I was walking today. I really love this purple.

Soubhiville Thistles are so pretty, it‘s a shame they‘re so prickly. 2y

The first Bosch/Ballard mashup definitely didn't disappoint! Everything was perfection - alternating perspectives, various cases, and completely action packed from beginning to end. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what they get up to next 👏🏽

Book #2 in the Renee Ballard series (1st one w/Bosch). I know I read this before (& likely reviewed it but can‘t find it now). This is part of the Renee Ballard series (featuring Harry Bosch). It picks up right after Book #20 of the Harry Bosch series. Harry is still with San Fernando PD as a reserve/volunteer doing his own thing on the side. If you‘ve watched the tv show, this is where he follows the trail of Daisy Clayton.

Another genius book by Connelly. The ending was bittersweet and further reminded myself that there is no perfect scenario to please every party involved. My only complaint is that I wish there was slightly more background on the Cortez portion of the book- that ending felt a little stale to me, but not enough to avoid recommending this work. This only convinced me to pursue the series of Bosch and Ballard.

It was okay, but suffered from the same problem as the first book—too realistic! I know that in real life, cops spend a lot of time on little details and boring shifts, but I don‘t really want to read about it. There‘s no sense of urgency. I want to know who dunnit but getting there is kinda boring. It always picks up toward the end, but I‘m used to John Sandford. Opening his books is like a rollercoaster taking off, and you can‘t put them down!

KathyWheeler I also am not fully invested in Renee Ballard as a character either. (edited) 4y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @KathyWheeler Yeah, I‘ve had other suggestions for broadening my crime authors, so I think I‘m going to try some of those. 🤷‍♀️ 4y
KathyWheeler @CindyMyLifeIsLit I like Connolly‘s Bosch books, but they might be too procedural for you as well. 4y

I changed my answer from So So to Pick, because I actually enjoyed reading this book and I can‘t wait to finish it. I haven‘t read any other Harry Bosch books so I might be missing out on some stuff but I think I‘m catching on. I really like this book and would recommend it to some people.

MrsBabki Looks like a harder read? Was it? 4y

I haven‘t read to much yet but during the break I had to find a book for the 30 minutes per day reading and it was one of my dads books that he owns so I tried this and so far it‘s not to bad. I put it as a so so because I haven‘t gone to far to any twists or big plot stuff. It‘s a detective novel. If you like those I‘d say you would like this. It‘s a fairly big book with around 500 pages in it. But I think I might like it.

Cfischbuch Way to try something new. He‘s a good author. Stick with it. 4y

We had our first 2020 meeting of #ThePoconoBookClub yesterday afternoon 😁!!! We all talked about whichever book we had won at December‘s grab bag at our last meeting. I won the Connelly book and it was my first Bosch—not bad, not bad at all. I‘ll have to start with the first now though, lol. Full house of great books discussed! I had cream of chicken soup, garlic-dill clams, toasted bread, unsweetened iced tea, & whisky hot chocolate!

WanderingBookaneer I am loving Renee Ballard 4y

This was an easy book to chew though - a page-turner that picks up where the show leaves off to find the murderer of Daisy Clayton. Love this new book from Michael Connelly; a nice blend of Bosch and Ballard‘s perspective. I love the real, raw struggle of Ballard‘s reality of being a woman in a male-dominated field.

My reading this month has pretty much come to a grinding halt. Too much work and stress and life. I‘ve been decompressing with far too much tv. This was a great continuation of the latest season of Bosch. Also my #nightoriented pick for #booked2019. And I‘m up to date on a series! 🎉🎉🎉

Scrappymags 3-word review: Continuing bad-ass saga

Ballard is being revealed like an onion - layer after layer except what I‘m finding I‘m loving (bleck to onions). There‘s a story there - something hidden but her tough nature is enticing. I absolutely adore having a powerful female lead! Paired with Bosch? I‘m sold.

I loved this book! Michael Connelly is one of my favorite authors and I love the Harry Bosch series. This is the second book in the Renee Ballard series and it features Harry. I loved that both characters were able to work together to solve almost a decade old case. Their determination was so great. I am excited for more of the crossover novels!

This latest from Micheal Connelly seamlessly combines his two current series with a solid cold case mystery. Connelly‘s books are traditional procedurals yet somehow manages to feel fresh and unique. Here his young brash female detective is the perfect counterpoint for a slower version of Bosch who is questioning his skills as both a detective and as a man and his worth to society. Both narrators are splendid in their performances.

#BookMail Pt10 WOW, I didn‘t actually realize how many books came during the last month. Think as of today I‘ll be on a #bookbuyingban until at least Xmas! This was another signed preorder from Waterstones, they dropped it to half price so I just had to get it. The first in the combo of Ballard & Bosch, hopefully it‘s as great as his original series was.

Dark Sacred Night is a crime thriller starring retired Harry Bosch and Detective Renee Ballard.

The writing is quite fast paced and entertaining with some great characterisation and a good eye for detail. There are several plot lines that all start to come together, making this a quite enjoyable and absorbing read.

thanks to the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review
