Crime Writers Association John Creasey Dagger Award winner An ECONOMIST TOP FICTION TITLE OF THE YEARA FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEARA GUARDIAN BEST CRIME AND THRILLER OF THE YEARA KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR A luminous novel, a police thriller, and the funniest book about war crimes and dementia you are likely to read Sheldon Horowitz widowed, impatient, impertinent has grudgingly agreed to leave New York and move in with his granddaughter, Rhea, and her new husband, Lars, in Norway: a country of blue and ice with one thousand Jews, not one of them a former Marine sniper in the Korean War turned watch repairman, who failed his only son by sending him to Vietnam to die. Not until now, anyway. Home alone one morning, Sheldon witnesses a dispute between the woman who lives upstairs and an aggressive stranger. When events turn dire, Sheldon seizes and shields the neighbor s young son from the violence, and they flee the scene. But old age and circumstances are altering Sheldon s experience of time and memory. He is haunted by dreams of his son Saul s life and by guilt over his death. As Sheldon and the boy look for a haven in an alien world, reality and fantasy, past and present, weave together, forcing them ever forward to a wrenching moment of truth. "Norwegian by Night" introduces an ensemble of unforgettable characters Sheldon and the boy, Rhea and Lars, a Balkan war criminal named Enver, and Sigrid and Petter, the brilliantly dry-witted investigating officers as they chase one another, and their own demons, through the wilderness at the end of the world."

Once I got a handle on the writing style - flashbacks, hallucinations etc - I was better able to enjoy this thriller. Recommend it for the strong development of the main character.

Went to McKay's to drop off some books and of course we ended up bringing some new ones home. Four of them are for the hubs, four for me, and a couple for swaps.

Elma @megzlynn @mom2bugnbee I read The Night Circus a couple years ago and really enjoyed it, so I got it for my husband to read because it seems like one he would like. 11mo
Elma @mom2bugnbee The Dinner has been on my TBR for awhile and it was in the bargain section so I thought I'd finally give it a try. 11mo
kuhkuhbird OMG, I love McKay's. Love travelling to the 'far-flung' locations in Chattanooga and Knoxville, too. 🤓 11mo
Elma @kuhkuhbird We used to drive through Knoxville all the time and I would always ask my husband to stop, but he always said we didn't have that much time. So I've only ever been to the Nashville location. 11mo
kuhkuhbird @Elma ROADTRIP!! 🚗 Seriously, the K'ville location is the best!! 11mo
Moony Hihi, it funny but saturday a friend borrowed me "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norwell", too. I'm curious about it. 11mo
Elma @Moony My husband has been really into Neil Gaiman recently and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norwell came up on a google search of books similar to Gaiman, so I wanted to get it for him for his birthday. 11mo
Moony Oh that's a nice idea! And I'm interssed in the book about drawing. Perhaps you'll show some pictures and content from the book? 11mo

I loved this book not because of the plot, though that was good, but for the insertion of humor.

Such an amazing #LTLPBC package from @DebBates101 ! I LOVE macarons & macaroons, and the packaging is so pretty. Can‘t wait to get into the spooky spirit with the Victorian ghost stories while enjoying the naughty vicar (😂😂😂). Thank you so much!!

DebBates101 @Ajessgirl Tell the Ghostly Tales book was too cute to pass up, but i should have bought one for me lol! The pastries are from an amazing bakery in St Louis. The Tea is from a tea room founded by an English expats. They host traditional high tea and run a standard cafe with the most delicious English goodies. The Naughty Vicar Tea is my favorite! If you ever come to STL I will take you to high tea 😊🥐☕️🥧 @Laughterhp 14mo

#norwegianbynight is excellent #scandinaviannoir. Sheldon Horowitz is old and has just moved from the US, to Norway with his granddaughter. He struggles to find familiarity and maybe experiencing dementia until one day, he helps the neighbours and ends up on the run thru the unfamiliar landscape with a young boy, using skills he thought he'd lost to save this young life. #derekbmiller has finely crafted an breathtaking story.

@Laughterhp @Ajessgirl I hope you both can figure out my map of comments 😕 After I wrote this one I sort of just paused and stared at it. Then decided the most logical thing to do is post it on Litsy #LTLPBC

Laughterhp Wow!! It looks like you helped explain my confusion, so I appreciate! It looks like you need a notebook or something for your thoughts 😂 1y
DebBates101 @Laughterhp Lol! That was just a particularly long note 😂 But i wasnt sure if it even helped w/ ur question. Sheldon is an interesting character and i am very curious about where this is headed 1y

Finished this book today. My choice for our #LTLPBC ! I‘m also using it for a couple prompts.

#Booked2018 - MC over 70 (or 80) 🤷🏻‍♀️ and #popsugar18

This book was a lot different than I thought it was going to be. A lot darker than I thought. It was a little slow for me and some parts were a little confusing. I‘m not going to say anything else and let @DebBates101 @Ajessgirl form their own opinions!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I may read this one for #nordicnoir from the #pop18 list. 1y
Cinfhen I thought this book was really quirky‼️ great choice for #pop18 @BarbaraTheBibliophage and for #mcover70 😘 1y

Feeling a little devastated by the end of this book. The entire book, actually. The story flowed easily between locations and decades, and I loved Sheldon. I can't wait to visit Norway in 2020 and connect with my roots.

Ugh this book. It's not going well so far for me but it's my book club book. I have an extreme dislike for super old characters who are either doddering or mean. Or when I have to read long passages about bodily functions. Chapter 2- a scene very descriptive about trying to urinate. Ugh. Hope it gets better. Anyone read this one?

vivastory I checked this one out, but never got around to it. Might have to skip this one. 2y
ReadingEnvy @vivastory I'm not even as far in as I like to get before making a judgement but snap judgement wise I'm skeptical. 2y
vivastory Do you bail on book club selections? 2y

Lindy If it were me, I‘d skip to the end and read the last chapter. If I saw merit there, I might go back to where I had left off, or else just read a few sample bits from the middle. 2y
ReadingEnvy @vivastory usually if I hate it I don't go, then find out others did too and it was a rowdy discussion 2y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy I pushed through and it started being more about the stuff happening and that has seemed to help. 2y

#DecDays #YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch Upon first glance both Sheldon & Ove, may seem like two grumpy, crotchety,ill-tempered old men😡 but really the opposite is true!!!! These stories are filled with humor, heart and insightfulness about how we often view our elders and the quick judgements we sometimes make. Highly recommend both books!

Well that was unusual. I read fairly widely in this genre, but that was the first book about an 82 year old Jewish veteran of the Korean war taking on a war criminal from Kosovo in Norway.

As much a meditation on parenting, being Jewish in America, grief, war, and regret as a plot-driven thriller. Sheldon Horowitz is a flawed hero for all ages. Sadly, I'm not holding my breath for the sequel.

Cinfhen This was a quirky read, but I enjoyed it. 3y

So looking through my books for today's #americanboy prompt I realized how many of my books are written from a female perspective, but I did think of this book which is my favorite book I have read in 2017! It takes place in Norway but the main character, Sheldon, is American and Jewish and these facts are essential to the story! #lyricalapril
