The Song of Achilles
The Song of Achilles | Madeline Miller
Greece in the age of Heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia. Here he is nobody, just another unwanted boy living in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles.Achilles, 'best of all the Greeks', is everything Patroclus is not - strong, beautiful, the child of a goddess - and by all rights their paths should never cross. Yet one day, Achilles takes the shamed prince under his wing and soon their tentative companionship gives way to a steadfast friendship. As they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something far deeper - despite the displeasure of Achilles's mother Thetis, a cruel and deathly pale sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.Fate is never far from the heels of Achilles. When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows Achilles into war, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they have learned, everything they hold dear. And that, before he is ready, he will be forced to surrender his friend to the hands of Fate.Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.

I really wanted to participate in #advent recommends this year and I‘m already behind! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Here‘s my Day 1 recommends - I plan on posting my 24 favorite books of the year!

I can‘t believe I read this book in January! I feel like that was so long ago! It was the first book I read in 2019 and I absolutely loved it. If you haven‘t read this, you should.

Very good. Loved the story and I learnt a lot about Greek mythology and was captivated with the story and it's characters. I listened to the audiobook of this and it took me a while as I wasn't sure about the narrator so I if I reread this I will just use my kindle version.

reserved this book at the library because of the reviews. When I brought it home and realized it was a story based on Greek mythology, I was so disappointed that I almost didn't read it. I'm so glad I did, though! It's incredibly well-written, and the story is extremely good. The only parts I didn't love were the fight scenes.

I loathe the time change! But I love this book so far! This is how I got through it! I want extra daylight at the end of the day not the beginning, so I don't understand how it's daylight savings." Seems like we should get to vote on it honestly. P. S. Clearly Canadian was my obsession in the 90s and I just had to have at every sleepover/Bday party ?

100%, best book I‘ve read all year. I know I say that about a lot of books, but this book just annihilated every book on my favorites list. This book is the love story Achilles deserved, the the low key, devoted couple I needed, and a magnificent piece of art. I will defend this book and everything is holds, represents and stands for until my dying breath. Thank you for coming to my rant. Excuse me while I go read it again and cry.

Been absent on Litsy for the past week & a half because I‘ve been off at this AMAZING conference on Homer and mythology in Greece, hosted by the amazing Madeline Miller. I am SO blessed to have gotten to know her and have her take interest in my own book (series) that, like “Song of Achilles” & “Circe” is of a genre called “Mythical Realism”. As both a writer & Classicist, I am so honored to know Ms.Miller & have her in my life. She IS a goddess❤️

Ok, Miller is definitely going onto my must read author list from now on! Not only did I love the story, she manages to write compelling stories about greek myths, but makes them unputdownable with almost lyrical story telling. She made me look at this old story in a completely new way, and made me want to reread the Iliad again, plus this book made me ugly cry like I haven‘t over a book for years. What more could you ask for?

This book had me falling in love with Achilles and Patroclus both. It's an easy read, and although I already knew the tragedy I would be facing, I had hope. Until the very last page. And even then, I still got the happy ending I craved. I have always viewed Achilles in a negative light, but this book showed me a kind, gentle, and honorable side to the hero. Patroclus was just a name, a filler character with no depth, until I read this book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

If I had had words to speak such a thing, I would have. But there were none that seemed big enough for it, to hold that swelling truth.
As if he had heard me, he reached for my hand. I did not need to look; his fingers were etched into my memory, slender and petal-veined, strong and quick and never wrong.
“Patroclus,” he said. He was always better with words than I.”

After Circe, expected to adore it. Adored it. I‘m reading my Litsy stack, so if I‘m leaving only raving reviews, it‘s your fault! Miller makes the Iliad and Greek myths sing and glow and brings familiar characters to arresting life. She brilliantly chooses a less legendary character, Patroclus, for a first-person narrator. He loves Achilles and Achilles loves him. We knew that. But how much? #classics #mythology #trojanwar #readingthestack

This was a beautiful love story between Achilles and the exiled prince, Patroclus; a love story that did an excellent job painting the multi-layered human side of the demi-God Achilles. We see him through Patroclus' eyes for all he was: complicated and flawed, and worthy and capable of the greatest love. Regardless of how many times you've read Homer's original, you'll be pleasantly surprised, and emotionally destroyed, by this rendition.
