I left the library with The Informers by Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez, and went straight to the park with my cup of Ugandan tea for a nice reading session under the shade of a huge cedar tree. Bliss!

I used ground lamb and combined a few recipes, but Kabuli Pulao - was amazingly delicious. https://igotitfrommymaman.com/kabuli-pulao-the-afghan-national-dish/ #foodandlit #foodandlit2022 #afghanistan

Thanks to the tagged book, which was truly awful but served its purpose, I‘m down to just 7 books to read for the #litsyatoz2022 challenge. These are the books I‘ve picked to read from my bookshelves to finish them out. Some serve dual purposes: for the #foodandlit2022 and #readingafrica2022 challenges. I‘m loving doing this countdown!

Mehso-so

I am glad I finally read this title. It‘s been on my TBR for so long I don‘t remember when I got it; probably a decade ago. Had I been choosing just for the country I probably could have found a more authentic voice. But I learned a bit and I am glad that I am meeting this challenge with books I already owned. Now to find the food. If I go by the book that would be kebab or “Kabul burgers” #foodandlit #foodandlit2022 #afghanistan

Heartbreaking. Also, how does this happen? It does not seem functional or sustainable. #foodandlit #afghanistan

Texreader The stories from Afghanistan are heartbreaking and so sad to know they‘re true 1mo
Chrissyreadit @Texreader @Butterfinger is there a challenge page on StoryGraph? 1mo
Butterfinger @Chrissyreadit yes there is. And this is one of my favorite books to read aloud. 1mo
Chrissyreadit @Butterfinger I‘m a mess and cannot find it 🥹 1mo

I‘m borrowing daughter‘s dorm room wheeled cart (she‘s now home from college for the summer) for my challenge reads. With her immense amount of help, we organized and updated my fave books bookshelf (in the background). Then we pulled out my IRL challenge books for #readingafrica2022 (top of cart) #foodandlit2022 and #litsyatoz and put them on her cart. I decided to throw in a couple of my Wilbur Smith books for Africa because, why not?

Nute Nice! 2mo
KristiAhlers Nice! I love organizing books. Or bullet journals or just about anything. I just visited my local bookstore and came away with a couple more reads for the #readafrica2022 challenge. I‘m going to be away for the weekend but I‘m hoping to get some reading done will traveling in the car. Total perk of being the passenger! 2mo
Texreader @KristiAhlers Oooh! Post what you bought! What countries? I‘m so excited! 2mo

In this graphic memoir, Nicolas Wild tells us of his time working as an expat graphic designer / comic book illustrator for a NGO in Afghanistan. He's quite honest about the insularity of his life there, but still, why didn't they hire local people? I'm glad I borrowed this from the library and did not spend my my money on it.

I am a tiny bit lay for April‘s #foodandlit #cuba but we enjoyed this Cuban dish. You all read some interesting titles! This was a good pick for me off my ancient TBR. https://www.thecandidappetite.com/cuban-potato-balls-papas-rellenas/ was easier than I thought. Now on to Afghanistan! #foodandlit2022

I've borrowed a travel coffee-table book about the Pamir area of Afghanistan. The photos are stunning. but I suspect the text will annoy me.

So, for Afghan month, I made Kabuli Palau (that's the rice, carrot and lamb dish in the middle), Afghani salad, Afghani stewed spinach, a garlic and yogurt sauce, and a fresh coriander (cilantro) chutney (not in picture). It was lovely, and perfect for Eid, but also very much not for beginner cooks. My 30 years' experience of making biryani came in handy...

Thanks for the compliment! 😁 The Kabuli Palau recipe was a bit involved, but definitely worth it!
