Once upon a time, Elliot was Macys entire worldgrowing from her gangly teen friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her motheronly to break it on the very night he declared his love for her. Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much morespending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco reading books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars

I‘ve read a few #ChristinaLauren books recently and fell in love with the humor and the fact that they‘re light reads. This one reminds me more of a #ColleenHoover book. I felt many emotions including happiness, sadness, anger. The whole second half of the book I was on the edge of my seat torn between wanting to know the ending and not wanting their story to be over. Loved it!

xxjenadanxx This is the next one of hers I‘m reading! I just adore her! 1mo

Super cute love story with some emotional tragedies along the way. I enjoyed the way the story unfolded with chapters titled “Then” and “Now” switching between the past and the present. Elliot and Macy‘s friendship was so beautiful. Their love of books, sharing favorite words, and updates in her closet library quickly made me want to jump right in their with them. I couldn‘t put this one down!

Strong contemporary romance with well-developed characters and an effective structure that alternates between present-day events and flashbacks that gradually reveal the truth about the day that ended their relationship ten years before. I'm a Christina Lauren fan! Who else has read their work? What did you think? (And how cool is it that they write together!?!)

This is a sweet love story of two broken people reconnecting. Macy had suffered enormous loss and struggles to connect in any meaningful way with those around her. Elliott hasn't been able to truly fall in love since he lost Macy. Happy endings for all.

If you‘re like me, you‘re always on the lookout for Rainbow Rowell read-alikes — which mostly don‘t exist. But this fits the bill! It‘s romantic with witty dialogue & a strong female friendship, & the love interest is a lanky book-nerd. Cue the swooning.

If you‘re so much like me that it‘s eerie, you might *be* Christina Lauren (which is weird, since they‘re two people). But honestly, it‘s like they reached into my brain.

Review cont‘d below👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: The book that the love interest first gifts the MC? It‘s my favorite childhood book/the inspiration for my first tattoo (“Bridge to Terabithia”). That same love interest (Elliot) & the MC (Macy) have an adorable, conversational ritual in which they share their favorite words. One of the MC‘s first favorites? “Tremble.” This has long been one of *my* favorite words. (edited) 9mo
monalyisha 2/2: Thankfully, the similarities mostly end there. I say thankfully because this book is BRUTALLY SAD. It‘s also sexy & sweet...but I‘d be lying by omission if I didn‘t mention that I cried for 400 out of 432 pages. Still, I love a good cry. I highly recommend this if you‘re looking to read a fast, modern romance that‘ll make you feel like you‘re on an emotional rollercoaster (& make you thankful for everyone in your life). 9mo
Lovesbooks87 I just finished their new book that comes out on Tuesday and I really loved it. I also just got this book in the mail today and I think it has just been bumped to the top of my TBR list with your review! 9mo

sammisho I love everything Christina Lauren writes! 9mo
monalyisha @Lovesbooks87 Welp, now I have to scramble to acquire their new one; I didn‘t even realize it was forthcoming! I just read Josh & Hazel‘s Guide to Not Dating & was pretty smitten — so I figured I‘d try another. I sense a pattern developing... 😉 9mo
Lovesbooks87 @monalyisha yea it comes out Tuesday. I am that crazy person that goes to Barnes and Noble on the Saturday before the books I am looking for come out and see if I can find them out early and I was lucky this time. I loved Josh and Hazel too. I also liked their book Roomies! 9mo
monalyisha @sammisho This is only my second read by them but I‘m starting to agree! 9mo
sammisho @monalyisha I started with their Beautiful Bastards series and just started devouring their novels. And they have improved over time 9mo
monalyisha @sammisho I‘m nervous about going backwards in their catalog because I think we‘re entering into a time where we expect a lot of the romance genre (namely, for the stories to be sweet AND feminist - & for them to upend gender roles)... and rightly so! But I have this (maybe unfounded) fear that older, contemporary romances might not age so well. 🙈 It‘s not a genre I‘m super well-versed in. (edited) 9mo
sammisho @monalyisha Yes! I have had that problem with other contemporary romance authors I have discovered. I don't *think* you will have a problem with CL, but it has been a few years since I started reading their books. I do not recall anything problematic . 9mo
thea-block @monalyisha What other books would you recommend to someone who loved this book (especially those who expect a lot out of the romance genre, as you so appropriately perceived in comments above!)? 9mo
monalyisha @thea-block It‘s not my go-to genre but I can tag a few I‘ve enjoyed! I‘ll start with one by Meg Cabot, which says it‘s # 4 in a series but each has its own set of characters & stands alone (& this is the best one). (edited) 9mo
monalyisha @thea-block My favorite Rainbow Rowell is Fangirl (it‘s YA; not sure if you‘re down for that). My other favorite of hers is “Attachments” (which is adult fic). (edited) 9mo
monalyisha @thea-block Another great “friends first” witty romance (again, YA) is “The Gentleman‘s Guide to Vice & Virtue.” The audio performance is fab. 9mo
thea-block @monalyisha It‘s not my go-to genre either, but since I‘ve read a few that I enjoyed (like Love and Other Words) I thought I‘d see if there are others like it out there! Thanks for the recs - I‘ve read a few Rowell books and liked them! 9mo
monalyisha Oh, @thea-block : I‘ve enjoyed Katie Cotugno‘s books, too! Maybe start with this (YA) book. 9mo
ravenlee I may have mentioned before, so forgive me if I have, but there‘s an indie bookstore in Omaha that often has autographed copies by Rainbow Rowell. It‘s The Bookworm and it‘s awesome (and they‘ll ship!). 9mo
monalyisha @ravenlee Might have to invest in an autographed copy of Fangirl. 🙌🏻 I don‘t buy books often but that could be worth it. I keep meaning to grab one of Maggie Stiefvater‘s, too - especially since she often doodles in them. 😍 9mo
Jovy This was the only CL book I read and I loved it! Maybe time to dig into their other books. Also love RR! ❤️ 9mo
monalyisha @Jovy The only other I can personally recommend is the tagged book. (I do think I like Love & Other Words a little bit more). But it was fun! 9mo
Jovy @monalyisha Thanks! I will start with that 👍🏼 9mo

Whenever I read about high school friendships, I get super-nostalgic about my friend, Matt. We hung out *constantly* in high school, counseled each other through heartbreaks, took long drives together, shared music, & often slept side-by-side, holding hands under the pillow. It was way more platonic than the relationship in “Love and Other Words,” but still such an important relationship in my life. We didn‘t stay close. But we‘re working on it.

monalyisha P.S. The picture in the bottom-right corner is of (some of the members of) my short stories book club at a recent Roxane Gay signing; we‘ve all been friends for more than 15 years. 👌🏻 9mo

A great contemporary fiction/romance by Christina Lauren! Definitely more heft to this one than others by this author, yet still an easy read. Loved the two timelines of relationship - it really enhanced the read. The characters and their relationship were authentic and sweet at the same time.

I don‘t love how often this author‘s female characters doubt themselves and their perspectives. Yet, there is always personal growth.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

monalyisha The dual timeline was clever because of the warring emotions it provoked. I both dreaded & craved the arrival of December 31st (depending on whether I was reading the “then” or “now” timeline). ❣️ 9mo
thea-block @monalyisha I totally agree! It was an effective device. It was nice to know more about their history in order to care about them getting to know one another in the present. 9mo

Oh, this book. If you read this book without sobbing a couple of times, you are dead inside, lol. We meet 10 yo Macy who has just lost her mother to cancer. Her dad has just bought a second house where Macy meets Elliot. They both bond over books and become each other‘s everyperson. Intersperse these chapters with chapters of a future where they‘re reconnecting after not having seen each other for 11 years, it makes for a great 2nd chance romance.

Reviewsbylola Lol, now I‘m afraid to read it in case I have no soul and don‘t cry. 😆 10mo
Reggie I think you would identify with it as a mother. When the mother knows she‘s going to die she writes a little list for the husband of how she wants her daughter to be raised. When she gets her period, the dad gives her a letter from the mom and then... waterworks. One of the very first rules is “buy our daughter books, not toys.” This doesn‘t even include between her and the boy, Elliot. Give it a shot, @Reviewsbylola aka The Ice Queen. (edited) 10mo

No #audiowalk today, my daughter was talking non-stop.

We went to the local mini-zoo in time for the feeding of the wolves at 10am. Then walked around and decided to go to the farm house museum about a kilometre across the road (down the hill, up the hill again).

We went up into the windmill, roamed around farm houses from the 19th century, wandered through the small herb gardens, and saw a linen weaving loom.

I‘ve enjoyed every Christina Lauren book I‘ve listened to, but I think this is my favorite so far. The way the authors melded the past and present into one emotional reveal was powerful and impressive. I didn‘t expect to find myself sobbing and feeling so much hurt and love for these characters. Highly recommend this romance novel.

Kaylamburson Same!! I think it‘s so hard to do it well, but this duo really nailed it. @Lady.Literary 11mo

Not my kind of book at all, but also not awful.

I absolutely was sucked into this sweet and heartbreaking second chance love story. Perhaps a little predictable but still a great journey. I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator was very good also. #romantsy

Really different from previous books by the Christina Lauren team. So incredibly sweet so far and I‘m not quite half way. I am completely sucked into this story of lost young love. #romantsy #glorytotheguild

I thought I was done with Christina Lauren novels but when I saw this in the library, I snatched it up! It‘s labeled as “Women‘s Fiction” but it‘s really a very, very angsty second chance romance that flashes back/forth between the present and when the protags were teenagers. Told purely from her POV, but readers get an acute picture of him as well. The denouement packs a punch and while perhaps a bit too melodramatic (🙄) still rating it a Pick

Lady.Literary The “favorite word” aspect of this book was my absolute favorite element to their relationship. 11mo

Wow! Not a book I would have chosen but it was recommended to me and I‘m glad I read it. An easy and quick read about the relationship between a boy and girl over the course of 15 years. Teenage years into adulthood.

Total impulse buy. 👍🏼 But I had a 20% off paperbacks coupon to use! And it matches my cat! So, clearly, destiny.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I typically read thriller/mystery books because I don‘t like all the emotions I feel when reading a book like Love and Other Words. Ugh..the throbbing in my throat as I try not to cry. I don‘t like feeling that way. I‘m an emotional person, so reading thrillers helps take my mind off my everyday feels. However, This book is a reminder that I‘ve been silly to pass on books because I didn‘t want to “feel” a certain way. Highly recommend!

Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren is SO SO SO GOOD. I‘m at the half way mark and I already ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! I don‘t want to put it down but at the same time I don‘t want it to end. I love the main characters. 💗💗

Audiobook
This book was engaging enough for me to continue. I liked the relationship both in the past and the present, but I found Macy to be a bit annoying after a while. I didn‘t like the reveal at the end, especially how it was handled.
