Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time | Mark Haddon
Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow. This improbable story of Christopher's quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years."

6mo

Very good read. The characters have real qualities are written in a very real environment. It is truly interesting to see through the eyes of another, especially in this case where Christopher goes through difficulties that much of the world may not. Very emotional if the reader thinks about the events that have occurred even if they were not written in such a way. This is a project worth reading.

I know this book is well loved on Litsy, but it's not the book for me. I gave it over 50 pages, and it still wasn't grabbing me, I was actively looking to read anything else instead of picking it up again. I'm sure it's a case of not the book but me.

Book 132

I've seen the play adaptation, so the story wasn't unexpected but was thoroughly enjoyable. The imperfect perspective of the protagonist is sweet and charming and seeing his difficulties navigating the world broadened my compassion for and understanding of autism. The ending isn't completely satisfying and leaves some questions unanswered, probably due to Christopher's perspective. But a highly- recommended, five-star read.

Picked up this interesting story today at a local Little Free Library.

Have you read it?

A 15-year-old boy with autism has his whole orderly world threatened when a dog dies in the neighborhood. Christopher goes out to investigate this mystery the only way he knows, like his favorite investigator Sherlock Holmes, with logic, patterns, and a diagram that he always keeps in his pocket.

sprainedbrain I really enjoyed this book 😊 1y

Gorgeous little book told from Christopher‘s point of view. This is such a great insight into the autistic mind.
(Keeping in mind that it‘s a very large spectrum and this is just one perspective).
Once you pick this book up it‘s very hard to put it down. It‘s really easy to read, at times funny, at other times it‘s so sad. It‘s a gem of a book and you‘ll find yourself cheering Christopher on the entire way.

After a couple of really stressful weeks I fell into a reading slump. I bailed on 6 books then ended up just reading a magazine for a few days. 🤦‍♀️ Things are easing up, I‘m finally able to concentrate then this book just jumped out at me and I really enjoyed it. Funny, poignant and immersive. A really well written heartfelt book.

This was the first book I ever read entirely in English. As Dutch is my native language and English my second, I used to just read Dutch. But I had to read this for school and I am so glad they made me read it. Not only did it open my literary world to a whole other language, it's also a very impressive read. Especially if you know someone who's on the autism spectrum.

Christopher's character felt flat to me. Perhaps I‘m simply spoiled for having read other, brilliant representations of neurodiverse characters in the seventeen years since this one was first released. For me, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time was fairly good… but not great, and certainly not as great as I‘d hoped. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-nigh...

CarolynM I thought Christopher was very convincing representation of a boy with Asperger's Syndrome - I could see his behaviours and thinking patterns in the AS boy I was bringing up at the time I read it. But it is a wide spectrum, and not all people with AS will think and behave in the same way. What are the books you've read that you think do it better? 2y

Such a great book! I enjoyed seeing life through Christopher‘s eyes and get an understanding of what his days are like. He‘s brilliant and yet things I take for granted as being simple are not easy for him. I used to sub a lot for a couple of autistic classes and I have a soft spot in my heart for them.
