Ender's Game | Orson Scott Card
Pickpick

Very good. Both a philosophical and sci-fi piece of literature which brought the work together brilliantly. It brings to light the difficulties of communication and questions the morality of humans. Very much a man vs self type of story, yet there are parts where it's man vs man or man vs bugger if you want to go there.
“Remember, the enemy's gate is down.”

The Hammer of God | Bo Giertz
Pickpick

Very good read. Combined from three novellas, this novel was very well written. Learning different doctrinal points through the basis of a book and viewing the learning experience of the different curates was enthralling. While one may say they would never do such a thing as the curates, it's easy to see where they went wrong and how we too could fall into the trap. From liberalism to legalism to orthodox, Giertz certainly captivates his audience.

Very good read. When rereading, this book doesn't loose its touch as the powerful message is still as striking as ever. This coming of age book is both fascinating and virtuous as Harper Lee reveals the life style and culture of that time period through the eyes of a child.

What You Left Behind | Jessica Verdi
Pickpick

Very good read. Characters were very much real. Interesting to put myself into the character's shoes as I wouldn't not normally think about being a teenage parent. Can't say it better than this:
“Why does everything have to suck so bad? Even when you think it's getting better, it's not. Life's building up suckiness, getting ready to hit you again, at the worst possible moment.”

Invisible Man | Ralph Ellison
Mehso-so

Good read. Although the prologue may have seemed a bit slow, once getting to chapter one, it was a blur. SO many different events occurred, it was like reading five different books in one. It was insane with several situations that I didn't even think would happen. Very interesting theme on identity.
“When I discover who I am, I'll be free.“

Very good. This author, in my mind, has a very good idea of presenting and writing characters very accurately to the world around us. From the strict parenting style to the problematic children to the struggling friends, the author displays the idea that everyone has difficulties whether one realizes this or not. Not only this, but some things are kept hidden for a reason.

Hello? | Liza Wiemer
Pickpick

Very good. The characters are displayed in a lighting that truly shows not only the experiences but also how they have grow and deal with them in the present. Not only are the character very raw, but also written in a way that may help others to find comfort and potentially gain help for themselves. Maybe one day we may finally understand what others need and what can be done to help. For now, just keep living.

Very good read. Even though the title spoils what happens, the process of how the events occur is fulfilling in a sense of both despair and satisfaction similar to a murder mystery. The author writes foil in this book very well and I think it's really a nice way to see these characters in their raw lighting. It really shows the essentials of living since after all “No matter how we choose to live, we both die at the end.”

Very good. Filled with metaphors and symbolism that truly embodies the difficulties of dealing with grief from all perspectives of the family. Although I may not fully understand everything yet, I still very much enjoyed it.
“Moving on, as a concept, is for stupid people, because any sensible person knows grief is a long-term project.”

Very good read. The characters have real qualities are written in a very real environment. It is truly interesting to see through the eyes of another, especially in this case where Christopher goes through difficulties that much of the world may not. Very emotional if the reader thinks about the events that have occurred even if they were not written in such a way. This is a project worth reading.

Doppler | Erlend Loe
Pickpick

Very good. Although it might seem like a man vs. nature book, the more you get into it, you realize it's more of a man vs. man or man vs. self book. All about conformity and how we must break away. Very interesting view on people and how we've progressed.
“Everyone is unique. In a way, I say. But unique just means unique. It doesn‘t mean good.”

The Book Thief | Markus Zusak
Pickpick

Very good read. Although a longer book, it captured my attention as the reader through the interesting narration and the several heartbreaking events. I'm not one for historical fiction, yet this book was very well written that even those who don't enjoy it much may find this book as something worth reading. Maybe they'll find their accordion through this.

Looking for Alaska | Green, John

Very good. Characters were developed in more of a real sense than those of an average high school setting. The emotions and coping mechanisms as well were very real. Making one's way out of a labyrinth is quite difficult.

Girl in Pieces | Kathleen Glasgow
Pickpick

Very good read. It truly displays what it's like to go through such an event. More of a character development book which was very nice to see the process of recovery. Captured my attention right away.
