An Unkindness of Magicians
An Unkindness of Magicians | Kat Howard
There is a dark secret that is hiding at the heart of New York City and diminishing the city’s magicians’ power in this fantasy thriller by acclaimed author Kat Howard. In New York City, magic controls everything. But the power of magic is fading. No one knows what is happening, except for Sydney—a new, rare magician with incredible power that has been unmatched in decades, and she may be the only person who is able to stop the darkness that is weakening the magic. But Sydney doesn’t want to help the system, she wants to destroy it. Sydney comes from the House of Shadows, which controls the magic with the help of sacrifices from magicians.

There are definitely parts of this that I liked, but I don‘t feel like we are given enough stakes to really appreciate the world and the consequences of the events that take place. It‘s geared up to be a series but I don‘t really know where they go with this unless they do a prequel. This cover is all kinds of gorgeous though.

I read this Apr 13-28 and gave it 3.5 ⭐️on Good Reads. I wanted to love this book but I felt it a tad too rush with too many characters to follow. That said I would love to see more set in this world.

This is kind of hard for me to rate since this would be between a pick and a so-so for me. The world was absolutely lovely and I was really intrigued by the way the magic system worked. Unfortunately, I think that some of the ideas could have been fleshed out a lot more since I still have questions. But I still recommend trying this book out and I‘ll definitely be reading the next one!

I have been dying to read this book for years and was not disappointed at all! I love the concepts in this book and the rich characters. My only complaint, which I have seen in other reviews of this book, is that it‘s too short. I feel like this book would be enhanced amazingly by being twice it‘s length. There is so much detail that could be flushed out. So much backstory and character building could have been added. That said, I loved it.

I‘d rate this book 2-3 out of 5 stars.
It had a lot going on. Like a lot.
But I was just left... dissatisfied.
Yup.
One word to sum it all up.
It would have been a solid 3 star for me if there hadn‘t been so much cussing. But that‘s that. 😑
I enjoyed the story to a point, but around the 320 mark I just wanted it to end. Never a good sign 😖.

A haunting book, which examines how people will treat others in pursuit of power. It‘s not a book I‘ll forget, but deeply cathartic! I liked the focus on the people on the periphery of the magical world - which match those on ours!

The writing style takes a while to get used to, but about 75 pages in you do, and the action picks up. Things are exciting as you learn more about the world and details begin to emerge. However, it seems like the author got tired of writing the story because the end feels super rushed. It was a good ending, just very rushed.

I really enjoyed this book. The concept of the cost of magic and where it comes from was fascinating and I really love all the different characters. My one complaint would be that there are a lot of characters that get POVs and sometimes it was hard to keep track of who was who, especially early on when I was still learning their names. Still, very much recommended.

This was an enthusiastic recommendation from a good friend, and she was right; I loved it. This would make a terrific miniseries. It‘s a standalone, which is a refreshing change, and a very different look at what magic might look like in our own world. Compelling and lovely and disturbing all at the same time.

Read like it was the movie-of-the-week. Quick pace, entertaining, and focused on the darker side of The Unseen World. Interesting, but it felt like a mashup of other things rather than original on its own. Even so, worth a try.

This was actually a really cool premise and I think it would've maybe been better as a duology but solid stand alone nonetheless. Characters were all interesting to follow and I loved the issues with the magic. I felt a little let down by how the duels were written and it seemed to be lacking an actual climax (I just kept waiting for it but it never came).

This book took a while to grow on me. A lot of the story depended on world building, but that was not done well or completely. But in the end I got into the magical battles.

The Magicians meets Gossip Girl meets Game of Thrones: a deadly tournament between prominent magical Houses in New York to gain power. Our heroine, Sydney, is a badass magician with a traumatic past out for revenge. I enjoyed the heck out of this book and would recommend as a modern fantasy with great worldbuilding. I could see this as a TV series for sure. I did have some issues with the writing style, which isn't perfect. 4⭐️

Like a little magic in your reading? Maybe these two nominees will fit the bill. Unkindness is a dark fantasy set in New York. It was listed as an NPR best of 2017 and features a strong protagonist.

Beasts of extraordinary circumstance was a BOTM and is described as a masterpiece of imagination is is a story of magic, love, and adventure.

I‘m stretching today‘s #fairytale prompt a little. Kat Howard‘s Roses And Rot was a kind of modern day fairy tale, and today I went to the library and her NEW book jumped right off the shelf and into my hands! It‘s ok that I only intended to pick up my one hold and came home with THREE books instead, right...? Sorry MountTBR. #MarchInBooks

That feeling when you're reading a book you're exactly in the mood for. I'd describe this as Game of Thrones meets Gossip Girl meets The Magicians--it's about a magical tournament for the rule of the unseen magical world between houses of powerful families in New York and our main character Sydney is an outsider looking for for revenge. I'm enjoying the heck out of it so far.

A fantastic book about magic that has a strong female character. The descriptions of magic were matter of fact but still fantastic. I liked the everyday-ness of the world against the magical and historical elements. Great read for those looking for a grown up book about magic and bad ass female characters

I have listened to the audiobook in 2 days, so I can‘t say I wasn‘t hooked but towards the end the main character Sydney turns from bad-ass revengeful and powerful magician to the slightly above average female character of urban fantasy. So.. yes, the story is really cool, the tournament is even cooler but the magic society lacked a bit of background to make it really believable. And it could have been 50 pages shorter. Pleasant read overall

I am pleased to say that this magical society is quite different from everything I know. The way it is organized , the laws that rule the use of magic, spell casting and tournaments.
Which is something that should not be taken for granted in the Harry Potter era.

Not reading but listening 👂
As much as I like the story I have to say that Madeleine Maby voice is very similar to Siri‘s and listening to this audiobook is kind of weird. Plus she does different characters voices which is something that spoils the experience of listening and I don‘t like.
