Life After Life
Life After Life: A Novel | Kate Atkinson
What if you could live again and again, until you got it right? On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war. Does Ursula's apparently infinite number of lives give her the power to save the world from its inevitable destiny? And if she can -- will she?Darkly comic, startlingly poignant, and utterly original -- this is Kate Atkinson at her absolute best.

Beautifully written and deeply researched historical fiction, which is also a meditation on the ways that small changes can ripple through a person's life. I really liked it, but I did have some questions about the ending, which I'll put in a spoiler below.

I wish I still had my old book club, because this would be a great, meaty book for discussion.

effani If the central question of the book is “What if you could live again and again, until you got it right?“ then the beginning leads us to believe that “getting it right“ consists of killing Hitler. But once we get to that point, the story starts over again, suggesting that that's not the “right answer“ after all. Maybe saving Teddy is, but that's valuing one life over millions, and not even directly in Ursula's control. 2w
effani I'm not quite sure what to make of that, or what the book is ultimately trying to say about the idea of “getting it right.“ Maybe there is no right answer, and the loop is just endless, but only Ursula is aware of it? That seems particularly bleak though. 2w

I enjoyed my time with Ursula and the rest of the Todd Family in this book. At first the plot confused me, but then I really enjoyed it. Definitely haven‘t read anything like this before. Not one I‘d recommend to everyone, but I really liked it 👍🏻

It's a cold, snowy Samhain and I've just gotten back from vacation, so I would like nothing more than to spend all day curled up under a blanket with a book and a cup of tea. Unfortunately I have errands to run instead.

I might need to take a break from this book - it's good, but it's bleak (and I'm currently reading a section set in Nazi Germany, which doesn't help). I think I'm in the mood for something a bit fluffier.

Ursula‘s nebulous recollections of life, death and rebirth lend an air of mystery and kinesthetic melancholy to this amazing novel...

LRSmith I have to admit this is one I could not make it through. I love Kate Atkinson. Love, love her writing the way her mind works. she makes you laugh and breaks your heart. But when it got to the life with that husband… I could not go on over and again. When you finish, tell me how it ends. Tell me there is hope. (I‘m not usually a cowardly reader.) 2mo

Took a while to get into the rhythm of this book, but once I started being aware of the dates I caught on. Then I really liked the home life of WW I described in it. Not so much the WWII home life in Britain with the bombings. However I really liked the family and will pick up the next one. Oh fyi it looks like a chunky book, but there is a lot of white space on the pages because of the way the chapters are done- don‘t be intimidated!f

Life After Life is murky. It‘s got plot-lines that aren‘t completely resolved, and kind of appear and disappear at Atkinson‘s will. The philosophical questions raised by Ursula‘s endless Sliding Doors moments aren‘t really answered. We don‘t even know why or how her life happens over and over again. I guess I‘d say it straddles historical and speculative fiction. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/life-after-life-kate-atkinson/

Every breath Ursula takes is quickened by the buried memories of her past lives, especially when she has the chance to alter her present life's tragic course. From the beginning, we learn that she may be stalking a prominent quarry, even as death seems to stalk her. The form sounds like the best part (and it is good fun), but the characters made the novel for me- they rank with the best British classics.

Cinfhen Great choice!!! Although this novel drove me bonkers... not in a good way 🙄 7mo
Billypar @Cinfhen There is so much brutality to endure, and the forward momentum (not quite the right phrase for this I know 😉) does slow down in the second half. I wouldn't have liked it half as much if I didn't respond to Atkinson's writing as I did. 7mo

This book is about a girl named Ursula who starts her life over every time she dies. It‘s kind of like Groundhog‘s Day but she starts her life over instead of just the day. While a really interesting concept (lots of butterfly effect endings) it was just too long! I don‘t mind a long book, but I would at least like for there to be a point.

This is a beautifully written but in many ways devastating book. I loved the unique way of storytelling but it‘s very heavy at points.

BookNAround I listened to this one in the car and was so grateful I‘d read something about the restarting over and over again or I might have thought the audio was glitchy! But it was an amazing book to listen to and really highlighted Atkinson‘s intentional repetition. 8mo

This is a well-written book based on a rather odd premise. It‘s like Groundhog Day for life. It starts with Ursula Todd‘s birth on a snowy night in 1910. The doctor fails to arrive in time and the baby is stillborn, the cord wrapped around her neck. The next thing we know, the story resets and starts over. The story continues like this, resetting each time she dies. I never understood why. Why her? Is it magic? No answers, but a good story anyway.

Erofan A great story that made me wonder how I would have lived my life if I had a lot of chances! 8mo
Emilyrjones22 I loved this book so much! 8mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Erofan @Emilyrjones22 I don‘t know. It was an interesting story—I love the time period that it covers. I guess I just didn‘t really see the point. Of course all of our lives are a maze defined by our choices, with the slightest variations ending in widely divergent paths, but this seems to be a given. What is the theme here? What is the author‘s purpose or message? Except for a dim instinctual avoidance of some situations, what does Ursula learn? 8mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit I know Groundhog Day is a hackneyed comparison, but at least we see the MC learn from his experiences and grow from a jerk into a decent person. Ursula seems to be a decent person throughout who doesn‘t really remember her other experiences (not consciously) so can‘t really learn from them. It‘s just a matter of chance, basically. I felt a little cheated at the end by the randomness. Maybe that was the point! What do you think? 8mo

I loved this book so much. It took me a few chapters to understand what was happening but once I caught on, I was all in. I can see where it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly was mine. I can't wait to read the "companion novel" A God in Ruins. I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but this was a 5⭐ read for me.

#LAL2019

CarolynM I liked it a lot too and I think A God in Ruins is even better. 8mo
Ingerella @CarolynM ooh, good to know! I'm trying to decide when to start it. I have one book I have to finish then I'll decide. I kind of want to savor Life After Life for a bit. 8mo
Laura317 I really liked this too. Not sure I wanted to know what happens next until I saw @CarolynM ‘s post. 8mo

Cortg I have both books sitting on my bookshelf patiently waiting for me to read them! 8mo
BarbaraJean I LOVED this book. I was wary because I was really unimpressed by the only other Kate Atkinson I‘d read (Case Histories), but I devoured this one and loved every minute. 8mo
CarolynM @Laura317 It's not really what happens next, it focuses on Teddy's life and the family he makes. I found it really moving. 8mo
Bklover I‘ll be interested to hear what you think of the companion book. I read Life After Life and loved it, but had no desire to read the follow up book about Teddy. If you love it, maybe I should reconsider!! 8mo
Ingerella @Cortg Give them a go! @Laura317 I am looking forward to Teddy's story. I'm also curious to know if he has the same gift. 8mo
Ingerella @BarbaraJean This was my first by Kate Atkinson. The day before I started reading it my friend, who I usually always agree with on books, told me she hated this book. I went in very apprehensive for that reason but ended up loving it! 8mo
Ingerella @Bklover I'll let you know how it goes! 8mo

The Todds are an upper middle class English family living in Fox Corner, outside of London. Ursula Todd, born in 1910, lives a series of parallel existences through two brutal world wars and into the 1960‘s. Chapter titles and dates help the reader to follow the repeated lives. I found the format creative, albeit confusing at times. Ursula experienced a full life, at times tragic, but never dull.

Ruthiella Right! I was so impressed by this book! How it never got gimmicky or dull! 😀 8mo
DivineDiana @Ruthiella Agree! Never a dull moment! 🙂 8mo

Today‘s #LustForLife tag made me think of Kate Atkinson‘s Life After Life. This is a quite unique book about Ursula who continually gets to reboot her life and start all over again when she dies through multiple causes through her myriad lives. Took a while to get into it but then loved it and it‘s partner book A God In Ruins.

My pick for #TurnBackTime. Life After Life isn‘t time travel but the main character‘s life starts over and over. I still need to read the sequel. #literaryluck (P.S. I hate the time change. It makes me feel sick for a few days every time.)

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I like it, but not for the first few days!! 8mo

Here we are at the end of our Buddy Read! Thanks so much @Pruzy for co-hosting and for having such great questions, including our final discussion question this week! Make sure you swing over there!
My easy questions this week are these: What were your final thoughts on the book? Do you plan on reading the companion novel, A God in Ruins?

I loved reading this book with buddies. Thanks so much for joining in!
#LAL2019 #LifeAfterLife

readordierachel Thanks for hosting @Ingerella and @Pruzy !! I really loved the book and plan on reading the sequel very soon (and more Atksinson in general). It was such a cool twist on historical fiction. I'm anxious to see where she takes this idea in A God in Ruins! 8mo
cobwebmoth Even though there were some very heavy topics in the book I still enjoyed it. I didn't know about the companion novel, so I'll have to check that out. Thanks to you and @Pruzy for hosting the buddy read! It was nice getting to discuss the book with others. 8mo
DivineDiana I enjoyed the book, but I did find it confusing. Not really sure what was real. Probably will not read the companion book. Thank you to you and @Pruzy for organizing the buddy read! I can finally check this off my #MtTbr ! 8mo

Well, everyone, the last day of our Live After Life #buddyread has arrived! Thanks to all of you who participated and made it this far. Congratulations! This was a really rewarding book to read and I‘m definitely going to read more by Kate Atkinson in the future. Special shoutout to @Ingerella for keeping the buddy read going on weeks where I wasn‘t able to engage as fully as I would have liked!

My question for this week is below! #LAL2019

Pruzy Life After Life started with the assassination of Hitler, surprisingly, Atkinson chose not to end the book with the assassination, although it came close to the end. Rather, we see that Ursula eventually gives up futilely trying to kill Hitler and instead tries to find Teddy and survive the war. The last scene in the book is from the midwife‘s perspective and not Ursula‘s what did you think about this understated ending? What does it signify? 8mo
cobwebmoth It seemed to me that even though Ursula had kind of figured out how to better use her "gift" the whole cycle would just keep repeating. 8mo
Pruzy @cobwebmoth Yes! Almost as though there was nothing for her to do, but enjoy the cycle and tweak it every time in a way that kept those she loved near to her. That said, we still didn‘t get an answer about what Sylvie was doing in London that one life 🤔 8mo
See All 15 Comments
cobwebmoth @Pruzy I know! There were a couple of things that I had hoped would be clarified by the end, but we just kept getting swept along with Ursula's new timelines. 8mo
Pruzy @cobwebmoth What other things did you want clarified? What happened to Izzie‘s kid? 🤔Hmm, what else 8mo
cobwebmoth Oh yeah, I did always wonder about her baby. And while I enjoyed the book I was kind of hoping for an explanation of why Ursula? What made her so special? 8mo
Pruzy @cobwebmoth Right! What gave her the abilities she had? Interesting question! 8mo
readordierachel @cobwebmoth @pruzy As far as why Ursula, I kinda got the impression at the very end, when Sylvie had the scissors ready, that she knew what was coming, maybe because she had the "gift" too. Maybe it *is* hereditary. I'm curious about Teddy in the next book. 8mo
cobwebmoth @readordierachel Ooh, interesting! I'm definitely curious about Teddy's book. 8mo
DivineDiana @Pruzy @cobwebmoth I thought Izzie‘s baby was Roland, and we eventually find out that he was raised by Sophie and Hugh. They find out that he has a mental condition, and drowns at the beach. 8mo
DivineDiana @readordierachel Yes! When Sophie was ready with the scissors, it led me to believe that she had “the gift “! 8mo
cobwebmoth @DivineDiana Yes, that happened in one of the timelines. I guess I just wanted to know what happened to him in the timelines where he was adopted. 8mo
DivineDiana @cobwebmoth Oh, I do remember that! Forgot there was another timeline for him! I found it all a bit confusing! 8mo
cobwebmoth @DivineDiana There was a lot to take in! 8mo
Ingerella I'm a little late to the comments here, but I did love the book ending. It felt kind of like a snapshot of just some of Ursula's possibilities. I imagine they just go on and on. I loved in the last section where she was really having deja Vu moments like crazy! I didn't mind not know some of those missing details because I really got into what was in store for her in the next life. @cobwebmoth @DivineDiana @readordierachel 8mo

Question 2!
What type of commentary does Atkinson make on the English
approach to war? Why do you think Atkinson portrayed one of Ursula‘s lives in Germany,
experiencing war and the bombing from the opposing side?
@Pruzy

Ingerella @SoniaC I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I have loved this book. 9mo

DivineDiana All caught up! Stranger and stranger!!! 9mo
Ingerella I think she's illustrating that the war was terrible on both sides. Ultimately Ursula was just as at risk. In terms of the approach, there were a few comments that indicated she felt the Nazis worked almost like a machine, and the British weren't going to the same effort to prepare for a war. It also seemed as though her family in Fox Corner were pretty removed from how terrible it was in places like London. 9mo
Laura317 That one scene with Frieda! 😭 It was interesting seeing the war from the Germany side. The big jump in time was a jolt though. 9mo
Pruzy It really was an interesting section! Probably one of the better sections of the book! Grounded the story in historical events instead of running parallel! 9mo
daena I felt the same way @Laura317 The scene with Frieda was intense. 9mo
Laura317 Can someone tell me what we read for this week? I don‘t want to read ahead of the group. 😊 9mo

We've had some tough reading this last week, and we are still in the middle of "A Long Hard War." This week I found 2 interesting questions.

Question 1! On page 379, Ursula faces a bleak end in Germany with her daughter, Frieda. She chooses

death over life for the first time, saying, “Something had cracked and broken and the order of

things had changed.” What do you think she means by that?
@Pruzy
#LAL2018 #LifeAfterLife

Ingerella Maybe she's referring to how everything is turned upside down. For example when before the war, food and the essentials for survival were just a given, now they have to search and scrounge for everything. Also, they used to worry about what was happening in the west with the war, but now the rumors of the Russians are more terrifying. When before Ursula worried about Freida not surviving, the real worry now IS her surviving. 9mo
