The Fortune Teller
The Fortune Teller: A Novel | Gwendolyn Womack
FROM THE AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF THE MEMORY PAINTER COMES A SWEEPING AND SUSPENSEFUL TALE OF ROMANCE, FATE, AND FORTUNE. Semele Cavnow appraises antiquities for an exclusive Manhattan auction house, deciphering ancient textsand when she discovers a manuscript written in the time of Cleopatra, she knows it will be the find of her career. Its author tells the story of a priceless tarot deck, now lost to history, but as Semele delves further, she realizes the manuscript is more than it seems. Both a memoir and a prophecy, it appears to be the work of a powerful seer, describing devastating wars and natural disasters in detail thousands of years before they occurred. The more she reads, the more the manuscript begins to affect Semeles life. But what happened to the tarot deck? As the mystery of her connection to its story deepens, Semele cant shake the feeling that shes being followed. Only one person can help her make sense of it all: her client, Theo Bossard. Yet Theo is arrogant and elusive, concealing secrets of his own, and theres more to Semeles desire to speak with him than she would like to admit. Can Semele even trust him? The auction date is swiftly approaching, and someone wants to interferesomeone who knows the cards exist, and that the Bossard manuscript is tied to her. Semele realizes its up to her to stop them: the manuscript holds the key to a two-thousand-year-old secret, a secret someone will do anything to possess.

I really liked this book in spite of it having moments I rolled my eyes at and lost interest. Dual timelines aren‘t always great but I enjoyed this.

I'll tell you, I DEVOURED this book so fast. I couldn't read it fast enough. Thanks @Avanders for the book 😍

I love how this story traveled through generations, centuries even. Kept me wondering what would happen next. The ending was a bit dramatic but isn't every book?

4.5 to 5 star read from me.

I enjoyed this book so much that I kept putting it down! I got hooked very early on and wayyy too involved. It‘s my #bookspin for the month so ✔️ but it also took place partly in Egypt so pleasant surprise because I‘m still waiting for my #foodandlit2022 library holds.
And speaking of… homemade Egyptian falafel, pita, salad. I even made the tahini! And nowwwww food coma. Recipe links below ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks haha yes I went through the effort of putting together Maggie Stiefvater's explanations that she had posted on IG - it ended up being worth it because for some reason I read like three books in a row that all had tarot cards as a big part of what was going on! 2y
Read-y_Picker @TheAromaofBooks hah! I love when that happens! This summer I ended up reading How to Stop Time, The First fifteen Lives of Harry August and Resurrection Blues and was sooooo mixed up. Haven‘t gotten to Stiefvater yet but I will! I need to FINISH some series first. 2y

Sorry friends, I just did not like this one. Almost a Pan.

I couldn‘t stand Semele and found her very unsympathetic. She treated everyone so poorly. If you told me this book was written by 2 different people I‘d believe you. The writing between the manuscript and present day seemed so different. I much preferred what happened in the past.

The ending seemed a bit ridiculous and far fetched. Idk this one just wasn‘t for me.

#LMPBC

Laughterhp This one line really killed the book for me. “A million times she questioned why he had kissed her.” - he literally kissed her 5 minutes ago. How could she think about it a million times? 🙄 3y
Laughterhp @Moonprismpower I was going to recommend this book to you if I liked it because it‘s all about tarot cards and each chapter title is a tarot card, but I didn‘t like it. So I don‘t think I could recommend it to you, but I‘d look it up! 3y

Eh. I enjoyed the chapters which traced the family history through the ages but the modern chapters, and esp Semele, the MC, drove me nuts. Also, I expected this to be enjoyably farfetched but the ending was over the top.

TheAromaofBooks The MC definitely got on my nerves in this one - and I felt like she pretty much treated everyone around her like garbage. I'm also not overly familiar with tarot, but I eventually printed off some explanations for the deck & that helped me a lot haha 3y
bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks I know very little about tarot. I can see that it might have helped if I'd done some research as I read. Except it wouldn't have kept me from disliking Semele! 3y
TheAromaofBooks Right?! This was an #LMPBC book for me - I'm not sure it's one I would have read on my own. 3y

Total popcorn book - the mashup of an early Mary Stewart gothic with a Dan Brown web of ANCIENT MYSTERY(!) that I didn't know I needed in my life. Among the many elements I relished:
- the mysterious Egyptian origins of the Tarot!
- the library of Alexandria!
- a mysterious heir with a rare manuscript collection!
- a heroine who happens to be a world-class manuscript specialist!
- Other stuff I won't spoil!
So yeah, deeply silly & tons of fun.

This not the book I am supposed to be reading, as MaciGrace has pointed out to me. But it is the first book I‘ve read in 2021, and I‘m just happy to have been able to focus long enough to finish it! I learned a few things and found myself googling several times to dig a bit deeper. I‘d have eliminated one of the characters as unnecessary but otherwise I truly enjoyed it.

I'm really enjoying this one BUT all the chapter headings are the names of various tarot cards & I don't really know much about tarot. A while ago, on Instagram, Maggie Stiefvater went through the entire deck with an explanation for each card & I've been looking them up & her descriptions are adding so much to this book! All that to say - I copied her descriptions into a Word document for reference, so if anyone would like me to email it to them ⬇

TheAromaofBooks let me know. I've seen some other folks studying basic tarot here, so I thought I'd let you all know that I had condense the information!! Her IG is still a great place to look through the overview as she includes pictures of the actual cards from her Scorpio Sea deck. 3y

bookishcow I‘m a former professional tarot reader so I‘m happy to help if you‘re not sure of the tarot card meanings 😊 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Catsandbooks - It's really adding a lot to the story for me! @Laughterhp - Even in small print it has ended up at 27 pages 😂 so if it's okay I'll email it to you. I feel like reading her descriptions after I read the chapter title is almost like a little subtitle for the chapter! Could you email me at itsthegoodlife15 at gmail and then I'll send it to you? 3y
TheAromaofBooks @redlotusdesignz - Thank you!! I will keep that in mind. So far I think the basic outline is enough to understand the story, as it's just the chapter titles = card names. But I'll let you know if it gets more complicated!! 3y

Okay have a question for the ones that went to #Bookcon I know it‘s not free to get in but can you get free books or do you have to pay for those too. I am thinking of going next year but I have to really budget if the books I want are not free.

wanderinglynn If I remember @MrBook & @TheSpineView were 2 who went to Bookcon. Maybe they can help answer your question? #inquiringmindswanttoknow 5y
GripLitGrl Publishers do offer free ARC's & Galleys this was my second year attending. I'm gonna post my books later after work. The ARC's for required standing in line 1 1/2 to get the book a lot of the lines closed down before the time the giveaway was scheduled to be offered which was unfortunate i missed a lot of books i really wanted. Waiting in lines had me miss some speakers also. But it's a good time i defiantly recommend going to experience it. 5y
LibrarianRyan For Book Con it is a little of both. Some signing lines require you purchase the book, some give out free ARCs, it just depends. There are normally long lines for free arcs, and they are usually limited. Some you have to sign up for when you register (ticketed signings), and some you get a ticket 30 minutes before it starts, and others are just massively long lines. This isn't a bad thing, is lines are a perfect place to sit. (on the floor). 5y
See All 11 Comments
TheSpineView @LibrarianRyan did an excellent job of describing how it worked. The only thing I will add is, if there is a free ARC that you must have, get in line early. Most books I saw for sale were at a discount if you decide you need it bad enough to buy. 5y
MrBook @GripLitGrl , @LibrarianRyan , and @TheSpineView , provided excellent explanations 😁! 5y
MrBook So, BookExpo has a ton of free books, BookCon has a few. If you want a free book, get a ticket ahead of BC or keep an eye out for tickets for them, which are called “drops”. As long as you have a ticket, you‘ll be able to snag a free book (they give out as many tickets as they have copies), so you don‘t necessarily have to wait in line the whole time. I usually would get in line when it was almost done, freeing me up for other things. 5y
MrBook With the big publishers, they usually offer hardcovers for something like $10 and paperbacks for $5. Or there‘s a 50-75% discount. The discount gets bigger as the last day gets closer to ending because they don‘t want to haul all that heavy stuff back to the office if they can help it. 5y
MrBook Small publishers and independently-published authors tend to ask full price. There‘s also all the merchandise booths, which have some really awesome goodies. They usually offer a 25-50% discount as well. 5y
MrBook When I could afford it for past conventions (not just BookCon but others too), I would take $200 in cash with me. Cash is king. Not everyone accepts card. 5y
LibrarianRyan I will also add that not every publisher you see Lutyens posting from expo will be at con. A lot of foreign language and publishers that work more with libraries will pack up and not stay for con. For example Scholastic. I don‘t know if they were at come this year, but the two expos I went to, scholastic packed up and did not attend con. 5y
Endowarrior21 Thank you all for the input and info 5y

I forgot to snap a pic of this book, so here‘s a violet from my garden instead. 🌸 I was underwhelmed by this book. The story itself was such an original idea, and the writing wasn‘t too bad. Such a shame that it devolved into tired old cliches by the end. Seriously, the “Big Finish” is such a tired old spy novel/movie trope that it‘s almost laughable!

5⭐️ The Fortune Teller is a fascinating travel through history from the time of the Library of Alexandria to the conclusion of World War II. An appraiser discovers a rare manuscript about a tarot deck saved from the flames that destroyed the Library of Alexandria. As she translates, she learns that the author predicted she would find it. It has a fantastic Katherine Neville feel to it. While nothing will top The Eight, this is a worthy successor in the line of fun treasure hunts. If you're a fan of Neville or Anne Fortier's books, you should definitely check this one out.

With this second novel, Womack cements her place in the genre with authors such as M.J. Rose and Kate Mosse. Her writing is engaging and clever, the characters and their stories are interesting, and the action moves along at a decent pace. I adored The Memory Painter, so I was understandably excited for another book by the author, and I didn't like this one nearly as much as her first one. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it and spent much of my weekend being lost in it, but it most likely won't stick with me like The Memory Painter. Pick it up if you liked her first one!

Excellent storytelling! The author breathed life into her characters. Relationships were well done; children and parents, best friends, co-workers, romantic pairings and enemies. An ancient manuscript and set of tarot cards were such integral parts of the story, almost becoming characters themselves. They provided wisdom, warnings, answers, insight and hope. I love when characters are voracious readers, hang out in libraries and are imaginative.

I'm sorry @Laalaleighh I know how much you loved this book, but I'm afraid it just wasn't for me. I almost bailed, but it was such a short read and I did want to know what happened, so I stuck with it. Don't take my word for it though, i could see others really liking it. I'm just picky wherever magical realism and historical fiction come into play.

Laalaleighh Aw, I'm sorry that you didn't like it! I'm a sucker for anything and everything library of Alexandria so I was hooked pretty fast! I did wish that the ending was slightly different and am hoping for a sequel. But I found the narrative throughout time so fascinating! Not everything is for everyone though! Hope you like your next book better! 7y
Purrfectpages @Laalaleighh that's one thing I love about Litsy. There are some great discussions and not everyone has to agree! I never thought about a sequel, but I see your point! (edited) 7y
Laalaleighh Same! I love that we all react to things so differently and getting to see that without any drama is one thing that makes Litsy so refreshing! I loved this book but I'm just as interested in why others didn't as I am in hearing people agree with me! For instance I'm not very picky with my magical realism, the more the better for me, but I have respect for people who are very discerning with their tastes in it and always curious to see what works 7y
Laalaleighh for them and what doesn't! 7y
Purrfectpages @Laalaleighh agreed! I still like to see what other people say! 7y
