Then She Was Gone
Then She Was Gone | Lisa Jewell
THEN Ellie Mack was many things. She was fifteen. She was the youngest of three. She was her mother's golden girl. She was heading towards a perfect post-exams summer holiday, with her whole life ahead of her. And then, she was gone. NOW Laurel Mack is living in the past. It's been ten years since Ellie disappeared, and Laurel's never given up hope of finding her daughter. But now, she no longer has a choice in the matter. It's time to let go. And then one day, as she is slowly piecing her life back together, Laurel meets Floyd in a local cafe. An unexpectedly charming mathematician, he sweeps Laurel off her feet. Before she knows it she's meeting his daughters, and his youngest Poppy takes Laurel's breath away. Because Poppy is so like Ellie was at that age. And now, all those unanswered questions that have haunted Laurel come flooding back. What happened to Ellie? Where did she go? Who still has secrets to hide?

Then She was Gone is a cleverly written, compelling, character driven psychological thriller that has a good dose of family drama thrown in. Alternating between past and present and narrated in multiple character POVs, Lisa Jewell has crafted deliciously dark, tangled-web of a tale full of interesting twists and unsettling turns that made for an addictively suspenseful read.

I saw this book coming from a mile away. At the beginning of this book I didn't like it at all. I thought all of the characters were quite annoying. But as it went on I didn't mind the characters as much. About halfway through the book I had pieced together the rest of the book. It didn't catch me by surprise at all. So I will only be able to rate this 3/5 stars

Butterflyamore I‘m reading this right now and I am so annoyed by the characters. I cannot stand Floyd and Poppy. 1d

A powerful narrative. The story is carried through various perspectives telling their part of the horror that is the main plot line for the book. I would not describe it as a psychological thriller. But I would a captivating, interesting, well written story. #bookclubreads

Have you gotten any new books this week? My haul is significantly smaller than usual but that‘s okay, considering that I seem to read a lot slower than my book buying habits comprehend. I got No Second Chance from Goodwill, Then She Was Gone through a Facebook group, The Better Liar From the publisher, and the rest from The Dog Eared Book in Palmyra, NY.

Samplergal I bought The Testaments this week. 😬 I‘m supposed to not be buying ANYTHING, yet alone Books. 4w

10/10 would read this again!
This was such a great thriller! I finished it very quickly, devouring every page... It's definitely not for the faint of heart, and it may trigger some because it does talk about sexual assault and abduction. I really loved the character development, and how the author brought to life their unique pain and mental torment.

I would recommend this for anyone who loves a good violent thriller.

A great mystery story about Ellie Mack's disappearance and how things aren't always as they seem. Laurel is surviving the loss of her daughter, the deterioration of her marriage and difficult relationships with her remaining children when Floyd walks into her life with his remarkably familiar daughter, Poppy. Lots of twists and turns and wonderful British slang!

Another spectacular British phrase I've never come across before! This lady did not hand out vegetables or a pillow to sit on, which is what I thought a squash might be. I had to look this up because it's a drink made with a juice concentrate. This is a new favorite!!

Megabooks I learned about it from Gordon Ramsey‘s Kitchen Nightmares UK version. I love it, too! 2mo
TrishB We would never say it like that though 🤷‍♀️ it would be want a drink of squash ....not a. Or in this sentence ‘some squash‘ would be acceptable 😁 (edited) 2mo
IamIamIam @TrishB That makes more sense. It should have registered after she said elderflower because I had bought the elderflower concentrate from IKEA once. Lol, I do love that phrase, though! 2mo

IamIamIam @TrishB Lol!!! I know, in my area at least, they sell frozen concentrates but not syrups to add to stuff. For me, squash is just a vegetable of varying sizes and colors! 🤗💜 2mo

I love the differences between British English and American English. The imagery that popped into my head was straight out of a medieval castle and I had to wipe the image clean and then saw a guy pulling a flashlight out of a drawer. 😁

Been at Outer Banks, NC the last week and finished this book with a view of the little lake next to our beach house. Overall the book wasn‘t bad. It held my interest, but it wasn‘t overly suspenseful given I‘d had the plot figured out pretty quickly. Still was pretty enjoyable, but not a favorite of mine.

I just fundamentally don‘t get this book.
THINGS IT IS NOT:
1) A mystery - There is absolutely nothing mysterious here. The author signposts literally everything. Have a feeling you figured it out after the first suspect is introduced? That‘s b/c you did.
2) A thriller - The plot mostly consists of a middle aged woman going on dates.
3) A psychological character study - Why do the characters do what they do? B/c the author says so.

So...🤷🏻‍♀️

LaurenReads Love this!!! 😂 I‘m going to move this down on my TBR pile 4mo

Day 10 of #30junebooks is SUMMER!
Here in #Tucson, summer means heat. And since everyone wants a nice air-conditioned place to hang out while the kids are outta school, Bookmans is BUSY all day, every day. 📚

I didn't mind this thriller, but I had some issues with the realism throughout. While this usually wouldn't put me off a book, I couldn't help but repeatedly note how the characters were completely unrealistic, and everything tied up a little too nicely at the end. Overall though, it kept me reading until the end without getting bored.
