Death Note, Volume 1
Death Note, Volume 1 | Tsugumi Ohba
Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the "Death Note," a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the "Death Note" to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life? Light tests the boundaries of the "Death Note"'s powers as L and the police begin to close in. Luckily Light's father is the head of the Japanese National Police Agency and leaves vital information about the case lying around the house. With access to his father's files, Light can keep one step ahead of the authorities. But who is the strange man following him, and how can Light guard against enemies whose names he doesn't know?

One thing I've become increasingly aware of is the way in which authors add information about their world. If it's done badly it can really kill my emersion in the story.

It's been so long since I read #manga but I just got an urge to do so tonight. I remember loving 'Death Note' in my early twenties, so it'll be interesting to see if it holds up a decade later.

I see why this is so popular. After Light Yagami finds a Death Note (a notebook belonging to a Shinigami death god) everything changes. Write someone‘s name in the book & they die—either by heart attack or a method the writer suggests. Light doesn‘t want to use it for evil. No, he wants to use it for good & so starts killing off criminals on his way to building a new utopia. When he becomes the hunted things get even more complicated. A good read.

It snowed this morning, the sun set at 4:36pm and the temperature is currently 26 degrees Fahrenheit and falling so yes, I am in my pjs, under the blankets and enjoying some reading therapy. I bought my husband the complete Death Note series a year or two ago when he started getting into anime (because a book is always better!) and he loved it. This week he gave me Volume 1 and told me I should read it. The howling winds outside say, “good idea!”

GrilledCheeseSamurai Snow here today as well. It looks (and feels) like the kind that isn't going to melt away. Winter is here to stay now. 😖 8mo

I hadn't read this since high school, but it's every bit as dark, clever and morally ambiguous as I remember. Glad I hung onto it all these years, even though I got rid of the vast majority of my manga collection.

2BR02B @GrilledCheeseSamurai when I say "got rid of" I mean "left most of them behind when I moved out of state for college, whereupon my family decided to dump them on the curb." So, yeah, I didn't have much say in the matter. 1y

My first manga read. I wasn't expecting much from it. Thought it would be childish. But the story is nothing like that and I found the story line interesting. Overall a good experience. Hoping the next book will also live up to expectation 👍👍

Help Littens!!! So I've never read Manga before but I've read comics. This series seems really interesting and I'm contemplating buying the whole boxed set or just volume 1 first to see if I like it?

Boxed set=$65 vs vol. 1=$9

CatLass007 I would take a chance and by the boxed set. You always can resell it on Amazon or eBay, if you don‘t like it. Of course, I‘ve never read it, so I don‘t really have any recommendations about the books themselves. 2y
abbsinwonderland I'm DYING for the box set! I loved the anime and really wanna read them. Don't base your choice off of the Netflix remake movie. 2y
GondorGirl @blkzero1 Are you familiar with this series? 2y

hyperhawk @GondorGirl I am familiar with this series and like it tho I don't think I have read them all. I have heard that the manga is close to the anime tho so if u would like to see if u would possibly like the series I would try watching the anime. 2y
bookloo I‘ve never read the comics, but I have seen the series (like previously mentioned the MOVIE is awful), and it. is. so. good. 🖤 2y

This was my first manga. I must admit that I watched the Netflix movie first, but the manga is so much better! I love the dynamic between Light and Ryuk. I found the rules for using the Death Note fascinating. I will definitely continue reading this series!

UnidragonFrag The anime is great, too, but that movie was a damn tragedy. It's like, they spent all their budget on the Ryuk CGI and then shrugged and threw some garbage together for the rest. I didn't like how they portrayed Ryuk in the movie.. he meddled more then he should've. :/ 2y
Jadams1776 Yeah, I decided to read the manga after watching the movie, but I can already tell the movie is disappointing in comparison 2y

Even though my expectations are not high, I am still looking forward to the live action adaption of Death Note (manga series) on Netflix this August 25th. I would've preferred a series rather than movie, but I'll take what I can get 👍

Here's a link to an article about what the mangaka thought about the adaption:

Yeah, this is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me. The art is fabulous, the story is interesting, and there is never any confusion as to who is talking or the order of things. It is amazing.

Light finds a Death Note, which gives him the power to kill by simply writing a name. He begins to use it to create a better world, but will the power ultimately corrupt him?

Can't say enough, how much I love this series! ❤️❤️❤️

To celebrate #ReadAcrossAmerica (#happybirthdaydrseuss) the schools in our county let kids dress up as their favorite book characters. I saw lots of Thing 1 and Thing 2, two Sam I Ams, a great Lorax, a Horton, and a couple Junie B. Joneses. But I got a billion teacher cool points when I realized one of my 5th graders was L from Death Note. She said no one had noticed yet and it made my day and hopefully hers too. #marchmadness #teachersoflitsy

Anti-hero/flawed character. Light Yagami is the main character of a manga series called Death Note. But main character isn't always good character - and he's not. His form of justice is by killing off "bad people" via a mystical notebook given to him by a death God. The guy is smart, but the power definitely got the better him.

The writing is brilliant and the suspense always made me crave more. #manga #deathnote #octphotochallenge #antihero

This is my first foray in to the World of Manga ? I chose Death Note because I have watched some of the anime some years ago and quite liked it (I'm not sure why I never got around to finishing), and my library has the little books, albeit in Danish, and I figured I'd give it a try ? The format is different, and I have to shuffle to "the back" to remind myself in which order to read the frames ? Also the pictures are chaotic? ? Or is that me?

TheLondonBookworm Loving the look of that page! 3y
Rizz @TheLondonBookworm Thank you so much! ? Me too! ? That is apparently the instructions that the so called "death note" notebook comes with, that the manga is about ? It is very exciting ???? 3y

Excellent concept that involves humans having control over the gods of death... What happens if we could kill anyone without a trace? How would you use this ability and to what price? ☠☠

Gezemice My kids were showing this anime to me. I don't do anime but it was quite engaging 3y
Zakia @Gezemice It's quite interesting, until you hit about book 4 and then you get bored of it 3y
Trav @Zakia funny you should say that as I'm up to book 4 now and not nearly as engrossed as when I first started the series. 3y
Zakia @Trav It does rather lose focus. I got bored of the whole 'who's the murderer' and 'who knows what' malarkey. I just want to see more of the demons and their world. 3y
