Mrs. Fletcher
Mrs. Fletcher: A Novel | Tom Perrotta
From one of the most popular and bestselling authors of our time, a penetrating and hilarious new novel about sex, love, and identity on the frontlines of Americas culture wars. Eve Fletcher is trying to figure out what comes next. A forty-six-year-old divorcee whose beloved only child has just left for college, Eve is struggling to adjust to her empty nest when one night her phone lights up with a text message. Sent from an anonymous number, the mysterious sender tells Eve, U R my MILF! Over the months that follow, that message comes to obsess Eve. While leading her all-too-placid lifeserving as Executive Director of the local senior center by day and taking a community college course on Gender and Society at nightEve cant curtail her own interest in a porn website called MILFateria.com, which features the erotic exploits of ordinary, middle-aged women like herself. Before long, Eves online fixations begin to spill over into real life, revealing new romantic possibilities that threaten to upend her quiet suburban existence. Meanwhile, miles away at the state college, Eves son Brendana jock and aspiring frat boydiscovers that his new campus isnt nearly as welcoming to his hard-partying lifestyle as he had imagined. Only a few weeks into his freshman year, Brendan is floundering in a college environment that challenges his white-dude privilege and shames him for his outmoded, chauvinistic ideas of sex. As the New England autumn turns cold, both mother and son find themselves enmeshed in morally fraught situations that come to a head on one fateful November night. Sharp, witty, and provocative, Mrs. Fletcher is a timeless examination of sexuality, identity, parenthood, and the big clarifying mistakes people can make when theyre no longer sure of who they are or where they belong.

This book was all over the place with so many themes - ageism, gender fluidity, consent, internet consumption, and sexual orientation. Perrotta clearly wanted to say a lot within such a short book that a lot of it felt inauthentic to me. I‘m still looking forward to HBO‘s series, though, to see all the awkwardness play out on screen!

A book about the empty nester: Eve, a divorcee, needs to reinvent herself and her life after her only son leaves for college. Her first escape is the internet, where she Googles the word MILF and discovers a whole new, porn-based world. Luckily there‘s more to the book than that.
I liked the way Perrotta handles some of today‘s taboos but he should have made Eve a man - I really couldn‘t connect to her as a woman.

Cinfhen I soooooooo agree with your review!!!! I also felt like Eve was 💯written by a man...as a woman I didn‘t find her believable 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5mo

BarbaraBB @TrishB I hope you‘ll have them. That would be awesome for you!! 🍀 5mo

Cinfhen 🤞🏼🤞🏼 @TrishB I was meant to be in Madrid May 19 - 25 but had to cancel our plans 😩hubby needs to be in states 5mo
TrishB @Cinfhen aww...😔 we are in a ballot for tickets. Son says we have 16% chance of both getting one. Then we have to decide whether to go on our own if only one gets one. Charlotte has exam on the Monday so hasn‘t gone in the ballot so not to be tempted!! 5mo
Susannah Too bad this isn‘t the Jessica Fletcher (Murder, She Wrote) origin story. That‘s a book I would read! 🤣 5mo
BarbaraBB @Susannah haha, no, unfortunately not 😂 5mo
Reggie I know I‘m a guy saying this but I saw her as a woman. Who due to empty nest and being a divorcée tried out new things. Had it been written by the common man she would have kept sleeping with the young guy. 5mo
BarbaraBB @Reggie Lol 😀 you‘re probably right! 5mo
readordierachel This was a so-so for me too. He writes well but...meh 5mo
Megabooks I love Perrota‘s early stuff, but it seems like each book has been watered down. I feel the same way about Liane Moriarty. 5mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks He was a new to me author and I‘ve never read Moriarty, so there‘s a lot of me to read. I discovered these author‘s names here on Litsy, I guess they are not as well-known in Europe. 5mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB It‘s really interesting who is popular where! I feel lucky that a lot of books are translated to English, but unfortunately, we don‘t get a lot of them in my small town library. I have to seek them out online. If you find Election, The Abstinence Teacher, or The Leftovers by Perrotta, they‘re my favorites. If you come across Moriarty, I like The Husband‘s Secret, Big Little Lies, and What Alice Forgot! 5mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Thank you for these recommendations, I will look into them! 😘 5mo

#MarchIntoThe70s Mrs. Fletcher is the new, 2019 #MrsRobinson 😜🎶💋and HBO is adapting the book into a TV series staring Kathryn Hahn. I personally disliked this book but many Littens thought it was funny & insightful. I thought Eve Fletcher felt like a character written by a man ( which she was) when instead I was hoping for Eve to feel like a real woman.

erzascarletbookgasm I have this as an option for #Booked2019 😉 7mo
Mdargusch I never read this because my book scout @emilyhaldi told me I wouldn‘t like the sex scenes. 🙈 7mo
Rachel_nyc I have been avoiding reading this because of the mixed reviews but I do love Perrotta (The Leftovers was terrific and I also loved the series) and I like Hahn so I guess I‘ll have to finally read it before the show comes out. 7mo

Reggie Really, because I think he showed great restraint. Sure she had a threesome but he coulda morphed her into some bisexual cougar who couldn‘t get enough. I think a typical man would have had her having one sexual adventure after another. She had one. I‘m all for the divorcée empty nester spreading her wings. 7mo
DivineDiana @Reggie Also not a fan of this book (although it had me chuckling at times), but I am a fan of your opinion! 🙂 (edited) 7mo
Cinfhen Thanks @DivineDiana I totally get what @Reggie said BUT for me, Eve still felt very much like a character created by a man. Maybe the mom in me had trouble with another mom sleeping with her son‘s buddy 😜 7mo

I really liked this. We meet divorced, middle aged, Eve as she drops off her son, Brendan, at college. She gets a text in the middle of the night saying she‘s a MILF. We follow Eve and Brendan as they try to figure themselves out in their different worlds. Perrotta throws a lot out there. My only problem was that for all the talk of sex and porn in here, the climax I had been expecting didn‘t happen. Other than that, an entertaining read.

CarolynM I have a copy of this somewhere. I should go look for it🙂 7mo
Reggie @CarolynM I don‘t know if you‘d like it. Perrotta has this thing where he sets all of his stories in suburbia and almost all the characters have this ick factor to them. They‘re definitely not perfect. 7mo

Really good read. Touched on lots of modern issues; gender identity, consent, internet porn, loneliness, among others. Very well handled, just fizzled out a bit at the end when everything came together a bit too nicely. Satisfying, but I would have preferred a big explosion.

Eve Fletcher navigates her empty nest syndrome and explores her sexuality. Eve's son Brendan is an absolute turd, getting drunk at college and treating girls like objects. Stuff happens, people change or don't change. Shrug. Some funny moments and I will explore more of Perrotta's work, but I was left feeling kind of unhappy and unsatisfied. ⬇️

readordierachel Ostensibly this is satire of current sexual politics, but it doesn't go far enough to really say anything interesting, and doesn't have enough character dimension to make me care about the plot. By no means a bad book, but just an OK one 9mo
Redwritinghood @readordierachel I‘m in agreement. It read like just a list of various issues of sex in the current society. 9mo

I‘ve enjoyed many of Tom Perrotta‘s novels about the seedy underbelly of American suburbs. This story made me want to wash my hands by the end. Unlikable characters make all kinds of bad choices but the writing pulls you along to the conclusion.

Eve Fletcher is dropping off her only child, Brendan, at college. She has singlehandedly packed the car and set up his room, only to be quickly dumped for her son‘s new BFF and roommate. She realizes that it is time to start a new chapter and take care of herself! While I liked Eve, I did not enjoy her sexual exploits. Topics include lots of porn, transgender life, feminism, autism, geriatrics. While I did laugh at times, I kind of felt dirty. 🙁

Last night‘s dinner of pork katsu, cabbage and vegetable soup was given the highest praise by the 5yo: “I love everything you cooked today mummy!”
I contemplated the raising of two young boys as I read this book later in bed, a book with a young man in college. A not very nice young man who has done some not very nice things and does not treat women, even those he likes, well. I cannot help but think of Terrace House: Opening New Doors (more👇)

RealLifeReading And how that young punk Yuudai behaves towards the girl he wants to date. How he expects people to do everything for him! How does a parent go about raising kids to NOT be that way?

BibliOphelia Raising a boy as well, after having raised a girl, and it feels like s totally different kind of responsibility. With my daughter, almost all of my responsibility was to her. With my son, a good chunk of it is to the world, as well. When I realized I felt that way, it made me think hard about gender differences and the way males impact society differently than women (generalization). It‘s crazy to me that it‘s still so different. 1y

I liked this book. I'd give it about ⭐⭐⭐ bc while I liked Eve, her son was a bit whiny and a womanizer also his storyline seem rather forced. Amanda's role was necessary but cut rather short. I think Julian was my favorite as well as Margot and her boyfriend. All in all it wasn't a total loss and the dialogue was pretty good. I'd recommend it but I wouldn't expect too much.

The resilience of the elderly—their sense of humor and reluctance to complain, their determination to make the best of a bad (and almost always worsening) situation—was both humbling and inspiring 👵🏼👴🏼

Not my usual kind of book. This is a story of a divorced mom whose son goes to college and she starts watching porn! Funny at times, but I‘m over the happy ending being that the woman has to end up remarried to find happiness. Fun to read, largely forgettable. 4 out of 5. Maybe 3.5.

I was farther along in this book than I thought I was. I really liked this story told from alternating points of view of the mom & the son. Although I admit to cringing a couple times thinking ‘“don‘t do that!”. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterM

3.5 Stars - liked this book but kept having to remind myself to read it. It wasn‘t the type of book I couldn‘t keep my hands off of, which is sort of ironic considering the author. If you‘ve read Perrotta, you know what you‘re getting here. Not to say there aren‘t a lot good things. The characters are strong, especially Eve; and I found her recent empty-nest experience to ring very true. Lots of good gender commentary too. Perfect for a book club.
