The Cafe by the Sea
The Cafe by the Sea: A Novel | Jenny Colgan
The New York Times bestselling author of Little Beach Street Bakery and Christmas at the Cupcake Caf returns with a new novela modern day retelling of the classic story Seven Brides for Seven Brothersperfect for fans of Meg Donohue, Elin Hilderbrand, and Sophie Kinsella. A London girl-about-town returns to her family's farm on a small Scottish island following her mother's death. Her father and her four brothers remain, and it's up to them to run the farm. But as she soon discovers, they aren't quite up to the task, and need all the help they can get. Leaving behind a bustling, high-stakes life in the city, our heroine builds a life for herself in her hometown, opening a caf using the local produce of the region. And romance isn't far behind The Caf by the Sea is a delightful summer time romp that puts a modern twist on the classic Seven Brides for Seven Brothers story.

I have no idea what the Isle of Skye is like, so it may be nothing like the fictional island of Mure featured in Jenny Colgan‘s series.

In this book, Flora gives up her career as a paralegal in London to skivvy for her father and brothers, but also finds the time to set up a café serving a selection of sweet,(and savoury) delights. So you could sort of call the café a #SweetSuccess...

(The book, IMO was not such a success - I gave it one star on Goodreads!)

Just lovely. Great summer read, funny, clever, full of baking, cheese, and cold Scottish cliffs. Maybe a bit predictable but sometimes that‘s the perfect fit and this one was for me. Looks like in the UK it has the title is The Seaside Summer Kitchen.

Finished a couple days ago and I loved this book so much - the audio was really well-done (hello wonderful accents!!). The setting is so amazingly cozy, rural and by the sea. Definitely a much-needed comfort read this week.

This was exactly the right book for me right now. First and foremost, I'm in love with the island. One of my favorite things is when the setting of a book is practically one of the characters and that was the case here. Speaking of characters they are all interesting and very believable. This is the first time I've read this author but I see that she's written a gazillion books so I'll be returning to her work in the future.

My finalized #24in48 stack! I'm super excited about this weekend! But my euphoria was dimmed earlier when I tried to express my excitement and explain the 24in48 to my sister and she just didn't understand -either one. Kind of bummed me out when I realized no one in my family understands or is the reader I am and can relate. Does anyone else experience this?

I don't know why, but I found the dialogue hard to follow--kept losing track of who was doing the talking. The premise was forced, but the story itself was good.

I‘ve spent the past few days utterly devouring these books. I bought Christmas on the Island, not realizing it was the 3rd and final book of this series. Fortunately I was able to get these for my kindle from the library! I have loved reading the story of Flora Mackenzie, her family and life on Mure, a very remote village in Scotland and can‘t wait to jump into part 3!

Elizabeth2 I added this to my TBR. I really enjoyed 11mo

I liked this one. I loved her other series, Little Beach Street Bakery, and the characters in this were just as great. I liked the other series better though. It's a tad too similar - girl goes back to home town, says she will never stay, meets the unlikely guy, quirky billionaire changes life for everyone... And those aren't spoilers, I promise. 😊 All-in-all, I enjoy her writing, the stories get me reading again, and they're fun reads. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good. I loved the story as the characters were just so heartwarming and you really felt involved with them. Also the setting was a character in itself as I felt the storms and the sunny days as if I was on the island myself. Recommend.

A sweet story with a happy ending, I really enjoyed the attention to details when it came to the setting of the island. It felt otherworldly, beautiful, and raw. The non-locals were irritating, though, and while there was some character growth, I really wasn't satisfied that they got all that they'd wanted without actually giving anything of themselves up. Overall though, an enchanting read.

This is the second book I‘ve read by this author. While I wouldn‘t claim they are great writing, they are so dang charming without being cutesy, that I can‘t help but like them. The setting and the characters are all very lovable and believable. Just a fun book.

BookNAround Her books are just so warm and pleasing. I dive into them when I need a feel good read or as I recently saw it called: “up lit.” 2y

Colgan has an amazing talent of describing the landscapes in her books perfectly. The small villages and islands she writes about come alive in her books. In The Cafe by the Sea, a young paralegal leaves London to go back home to her sleepy village to help a client. This is a quick and delightful read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

JoJo Moyes calls this “...a sweet treat” just how I felt reading today. Scenes of London,of stunning white, wide, beaches of Scottish north islands-places I have never been but felt was visiting today- story of finding home, leaving and returning, grieving, friendship, with some romance in between. Woven within its pages is myths of the selkies, a seal in the sea, who sheds its skin to become human on land.
