I think this book was charming, although 50-100 pages too long. The India section particularly dragged. Overall, I thought his was a funny, genuine memoir filled with interesting tidbits about different cultures and traditions and building a new life.

I read this because Elizabeth Gilbert spoke at work and she was an interesting speaker, and because I've made fun of this book without reading it and that's not fair. It's better than I expected in some ways, but it deserves a lot of the criticisms. I can't shake the feeling that she uses people at whim.

Very mixed feelings about this one... I heard the author speak last month and was floored by her presence, insight, and openness. I decided to give the book a shot, and I enjoyed parts of it. But here at the end, I realize her presence is overwhelming me, and I feel a little exhausted. #24in48 #readathon

I‘ve begun to dread reading this book as much as I dread the treadmill. I guess I‘m in the part of the book that others suggest is slow and boring... I appreciate that meditation is difficult, I can‘t even manage to do 5 minutes every day, but this is getting very repetitive.

I totally forgot that you could download some tv shows and movies on Netflix & watch them on the go! I found a few movies that are based on books, so now I‘ll have another option for entertainment when I‘m walking the hallways for the first 5-6 hours of the #LitsyWalkathon. My current stack of paperback to hardcover matches. I have rules when thrifting. One is to replace paperbacks with hardcovers then donate paperbacks to the FLLs in my neighborhood.

Sometimes I donate a mint condition paperback just to keep a well-used thrifted hardback. But #RulesAreRules !

I was so excited to find the tagged book - took me forever to find in hardback!

marleed @Cinfhen Somehow I hit my first blurb without posting a pic then had 2 posts! My theory on hardbacks is sheer number of books. I take the covers off most of my hardbacks so that they sit a bit quieter on my shelves - if that makes since to anyone but me! 6mo

This was good until the last section and then it just dragged on. I liked the little medicine man and wished there was more of him but I was just getting tired of the whining and self doubt that would flip in the same little section to a speech straight out of a yoga seminar about being your higher self and other such cliche things.

There's a wonderful old Italian joke about a poor man who goes to church every day and prays before the statue of a great saint, begging, "Dear saint-please, please, please...give me the grace to win the lottery". This lament goes on for months. Finally the exasperated statue comes to life, looks down at the begging man and says in weary disgust, "My son-please, please, please...buy a ticket."

I loved this book.
It's the journey of a lost soul around the world.
Italia, India, Indonesia.
And you feel it all.
You can taste what she tastes in Italia.
You can find peace of mind doing yoga with her in India.
You can love how she falls in love with a hot stranger (Javier Bardém in the movie... duh!) once she has finally found herself in Bali.

It made me think over stuff about my culture that I had never considered. And it gave me hope.

I'm being generous with the stars here. The writing was fine, but other than the first 50 or so pages, this was so incredibly dull. Also, and this could be the result of my non-religious nature, but I found her thoughts to be a bit too woo-woo. It just wasn't for me.
