#HaikuADay #HaikuHive

Today‘s haiku is inspired by a large banyan tree that fell into the road in Hilo this weekend. (Not the one pictured) Luckily, no one was injured but it makes me sad to see one of these revered trees fall. They are not native to Hawaii but they have become a part of the landscape & culture.

dabbe I'm so sad to hear about the fallen tree. What beauties they are as well as your haiku ode to them. 💚💙💚 3mo

TheBookHippie I love these trees… so sad. 3mo

Well written but the author had a lot of white privilege that was not acknowledged or addressed, but that tracks with the time period it was written.
After her divorce the author decides to travel, mostly to developing nations, where she joins in the local communities, gathers inspiration for her writing, and builds a global network of friends.
2/5 read for a well written travel story, but also know the age of the author and the time period

iread2much @MemoirsForMe yes! It‘s an older set, it‘s micro-figure sized and it‘s the whole castle. 😊💜 4mo

It‘s a good day when “work” means you get to read about shipwrecks. Today‘s work is focused on a shipwreck in the Java Sea—60,000+ glazed bowls, spice filled jars, objects in gold and silver, bronze mirrors, and more discovered in a vessel that sunk over 1,000 years ago.

bookandbedandtea Enjoy your very cool workday! 6mo

I liked this book. It told a different story about WWII that I didn't know about. The people in this book were great. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stars.

I finished this, but other than the story of the water buffalo and the boy who left and then returned home, don‘t ask me to tell you any details. I struggled to stay focused during several sections. I see how it addressed important points about colonialism, but I also expected more about the actual coffee business.

BarbaraBB Agree!! A very boring book. Kids in NL still have to read it in school, instead of stimulating their reading pleasure with something less dull. 8mo
Dilara I also remember struggling with this book when I read it a couple of decades ago. Still, I am sad that the Fairtrade mark isn't called Max Havelaar anymore. It made me feel all warm inside to see a literary sign on everyday products in the supermarket... 8mo

Picked up this slim volume from the library. Interesting little read about this cultural item from the south east Asian region.

It‘s the final week of January and I finally chose a book by a Dutch author from the 1001 list. Yesterday, I thought to check LibriVox and started the tagged book. I also made hopjesvla, and this morning I had coffee custard that tastes much like a caramel latte for breakfast.

BarbaraBB Yes, it sounds great! The book is a tough one but at least it‘s another of the #1001books! 8mo

Daisey @Larkken This was a recipe I just stumbled upon when perusing Pinterest for Dutch recipes, but it was a winner I‘ll definitely keep for a different kind of sweet treat. (edited) 8mo

This book is about the mass killings in Indonesia in 1965-66 and in other countries in the 20th century. There were so many details in this well researched book. I listened to the audio, so I‘m already planning to reread it and to research some of the topics in it, such as the Bandung Conference. #NonFiction

My favourite read in Novembers for #12Booksof2024 was this latest book by Heather Morris.

This tells the story of women taken prisoner by the Japanese in World War II and the horrific time they had in the far East Prison camps. This one has all the feels and think I even prefer it to the her European prison camp books.

Also a notable mention for The Templar Secret by Scott Mariani, the last book in one of my favourite all time series - Ben Hope.
