Lab Girl
Lab Girl | Hope Jahren
An illuminating debut memoir of a woman in science; a moving portrait of a longtime friendship; and a stunningly fresh look at plants that will forever change how you see the natural world Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which shes studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book is a revelatory treatise on plant lifebut it is also so much more. Lab Girl is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahrens remarkable stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classrooms labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science, and learned to perform lab work done with both the heart and the hands; and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work. Yet at the core of this book is the story of a relationship Jahren forged with a brilliant, wounded man named Bill, who becomes her lab partner and best friend. Their sometimes rogue adventures in science take them from the Midwest across the United States and back again, over the Atlantic to the ever-light skies of the North Pole and to tropical Hawaii, where she and her lab currently make their home. Jahrens probing look at plants, her astonishing tenacity of spirit, and her acute insights on nature enliven every page of this extraordinary book. Lab Girl opens your eyes to the beautiful, sophisticated mechanisms within every leaf, blade of grass, and flower petal. Here is an eloquent demonstration of what can happen when you find the stamina, passion, and sense of sacrifice needed to make a life out of what you truly love, as you discover along the way the person you were meant to be. From the Hardcover edition.

What an interesting and unusual #audiobook! I particularly appreciated the author‘s honesty about the personal and professional challenges she and her lab partner faced along the way. It showed the very human side of science. Her enthusiasm for her work was beautiful to see, and the book introduced me to some fascinating facts about trees.

Strange but charming. There were entire chapters I could‘ve done without but also memorable moments that had me laughing out loud. As the child of a field biologist, I couldn‘t help but see him, his colleagues, and our family in Hope, Bill, and her many lab techs and students. True insight into the worries of modern scientists but also tying in the beauty and wonder that they seem to see and experience all around them.

Completed for “something with science” in #nonfiction2019, this memoir details Jahren‘s life as she works to become a paleobiologist. It also touches on larger themes in the scientific community, including the current problems with securing funding, the over-saturation of the market with scientists, and the sexism that female scientists face in the field.

A fun and frequently very funny memoir of a scientist working in the world of plants and trees. Loved the relationship/friendship between Hope and her lab assistant Bill. And the science was really interesting as well.

I wanted to love this book and connect with the author but her voice for the audiobook made me bail. She sounds sad and weak throughout, when I don‘t think she actually is, and she overdramatizes any lines that I think I‘d actually enjoy just reading to myself (anywhere she uses hyperbole or personification or any other literary device). I‘d like to try this again in the future but I definitely do not recommend the audiobook.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's too bad, I really enjoyed the written version. But I can understand why you were put off. 3mo

This is Jahren‘s memoir of becoming a scientist and what goes on in a typical university lab. It is also a memoir of her life, touching on motherhood, falling in love, finding a family, and finding herself. It is very much a “science book” in that she discusses the nuances of paleobotany (her field), yet it‘s extremely readable and engaging.

Really worthwhile read. And beautifully written. Really accessible account of what it's like to be a scientist. Having been a scientist for a while myself, it definitely rung true, although she is much more passionate about it than I was (hence why I now write about it, rather than doing it!). The lack of funding for science and the constant struggle for grants seems to be a problem everywhere.
Bonus: I learnt lots of cool things about trees

As a scientist, I could relate to a lot of things the author talks about. But anyone can be a scientist if they‘re curious and willing to experiment a little. From the book: ‘All you need is a question. There, you‘re a scientist now!‘ :)

I was thoroughly engrossed in this book, narrated by the author herself. It‘s a science memoir, telling the story of trees and Jahren and their growth. I loved her relationship with Bill and the many bookish and feminist references.

(Plus, this is an interesting pairing with The Overstory.)

I finished this on Sunday, and I‘m a bit ambivalent. The tree parts were slow, but I didn‘t really mind that. A lot of people didn‘t like the author‘s reading, but I did—so often, her emotions came through so strongly in her voice & that made the narrative more meaningful. But in the end, I think I felt “meh” because I just didn‘t connect with the author. I respect her accomplishments as a woman in the sciences, and applaud her vulnerability... ⤵️

BarbaraJean ...in sharing her mental health journey, but in the end I guess I‘m a humanities girl—a Lit Girl, not a Lab Girl, if you will—and just never found a personal entry point into Jahren‘s story. I am glad I picked it up for #NewYearWhoDis, though—thank you for including it on your list, @Johanna414 ! It‘s outside my usual, and it was good to branch out (pun only partially intended!). 7mo

When I asked for good audiobooks a while back, someone here recommended me this. Loved it. Hearing about a woman's life in science and also about mental health was a good change from the memories of famous people that I've been listening.
While I'm always for audiobooks being narrated by the authors, it's obvious she's not a narrator or actress adn her voice and tone can be a bit monotonous at times.

Disclaimer - I listened to the audiobook. I have mixed feelings about this book. It was more relationship story than science or lab story, which is fine, but I think I expected more of the lab experiment story than it was. The tone of the narration was mostly down and depressing, but maybe reading it would yield a different take. I enjoyed the book but it wasn‘t what I had expected.

This #audiobook felt like it took me forever, but it was worth it. Hope Jahren has had an exceptional life, though not an easy one: struggles with her family, sexism in science, lack of funding, and mental illness keep this memoir from being a light, quick listen. Still, relationships with her students, lab partner, husband, and son help. Whether discussing plants or people, Jahren lets her emotions bleed into her voice, which I love. 5⭐️ for me.

TheBookKeepers I really enjoyed this one too & I‘m not a big non fiction fan. I thought the author did a phenomenal job narrating. I always feel like it adds something special when the author reads their own work. 9mo

This was such a wonderful memoir written by geobiologist Hope Jahren. She did a lovely job of explaining the science behind many of her experiments in a way that was understandable for the layperson and even related different aspects of botany to her life story. It was also a great tribute to friendship in her tales of adventures with her lab partner Bill. This book exceeded my expectations as I thought it might be dry, but was not at all.

If you enjoy the nerdy friendships of the Big Bang Theory, you will appreciate the wonderful friendship of Hope and Bill as they work to solve scientific questions on a shoestring budget. Whether Jahren is describing experiments, coworkers, mental health issues, or the bureaucratic nonsense of universities, she does it with an exacting eye and a poetic word. A memoir highly recommended by many, this book centers around friendship, love of science, and life in general..
The audiobook is read by someone who is on the verge of falling asleep, or who wishes you to fall asleep by her slow narration and rhythmic way of speaking.
