Replica | Lauren Oliver
Two girls, two stories, one epic novel. From Lauren Oliver, New York Times bestselling author of Before I Fall and the Delirium trilogy, comes an epic, masterful novel that explores issues of individuality, identity, and humanity. Replica contains two narratives in one: Lyras story and Gemmas story. The stories can be read separately, one after the other, or in alternating chapters. The two distinct parts of this astonishing novel combine to produce an unforgettable journey.Lyras story begins in the Haven Institute, a building tucked away on a private island off the coast of Florida that from a distance looks serene and even beautiful. But up close the locked doors, military guards, and biohazard suits tell a different story. In truth, Haven is a clandestine research facility where thousands of replicas, or human models, are born, raised, and observed. When a surprise attack is launched on Haven, two of its young experimental subjectsLyra, or 24, and the boy known only as 72manage to escape.Gemma has been in and out of hospitals for as long as she can remember. A lonely teen, her life is circumscribed by home, school, and her best friend, April. But after she is nearly abducted by a stranger claiming to know her, Gemma starts to investigate her familys past and discovers her fathers mysterious connection to the secretive Haven research facility. Hungry for answers, she travels to Florida, only to stumble upon two replicas and a completely new set of questions. While the stories of Lyra and Gemma mirror each other, each contains breathtaking revelations critically important to the other story. Replica is an ambitious, thought-provoking masterwork.

Fancy a bit of an easy YA read for the long weekend.... Plus these two are chonky and taking up a lot of shelf space.

Not sure how I will approach reading yet as these have a particular format ?

"Replica is a “flip book” that contains two narratives in one. Turn the book one way and read Lyra's story; turn the book over and upside down and read Gemma's story. The stories can be read separately, one after the other, or in alternating chapters"

🎧 This hardcover is STUNNING!

Total cover buy!! It‘s a shiny white naked cover with one butterfly split & flipped … one half on the front, other on the back with the body on the spine. “Lyra” on the front in grey & “Gemma” on the back upside down. With a clear plastic dust jacket tinted blue on the front, red spine & yellow on the back. All the other writing is on the jacket.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 👇🏻👇🏻

Twainy
The story is 2 POVs. Lyra‘s story is complete then you flip the book and start Gemma‘s full story. Their chapters move along concurrently so you can read them as 2 separate stories or read their chapters together. If you buy the audiobook you can integrate the stories or read them separately.

It‘s a decent YA sci-fi story involving clones/replicas, human weapons, child experimentation, escape, mystery, murder, thriller & ultimately a story about finding out who you are and accepting it. Good spin. Easy read!

Not too YA! I enjoyed it & want to read book 2!

PS - my hard covers for The Illuminae Files & The Book Thief are similar ❤️

Reggie Wow, this review totally took a turn in that last paragraph. My thoughts on beautiful cover skidded after I read human clones/replicas, human weapons, and child experimentation. Lol, nice review! Stacked! 2y

This story is told from two perspectives, the first, a clone (“replica”) at a secret research facility, and the second, a girl who begins to uncover many secrets from her past that brings her to the facility and in contact with the replica. While the plot is interesting and creative, I had some difficulty with the actual flow of events, the unrealistic outcomes (while knowing it‘s an unrealistic fictional plot), and the character relationships.

8/10 It took me awhile to get into it. I credit that to complex names and confusing side characters. But I ended up really loving the main characters. I didn‘t like certain holes in the plot line but as soon as I read the second side of the story it comes together totally. Both relationships are very quick and cliche...but trauma bonds right? Can‘t wait to read the sequel.

Books. I love books. I have to thank a fellow Litten for the tales from outer suburbia book envy because I added it to my Amazon Book Wishlist. And here are 5 books I added to my bookshelf today. All are beautiful. I‘ve already paged through them. Definitely adding all 5 to my ever growing TBR! I also purchased a rechargeable book light! 😁 Yesssss!

Lyra, a replica created in a lab. Gemma, a girl with a father involved in human experimentation. A unique duology where the reader chooses which story to read and when. A large part of Lyra's story revolved around what happened in Haven. While Gemma‘s storyline was more focused on discovering what Haven was. A great read! #youngadult #scifi

This SF New York Times bestseller book is great option for a LC or an AS since her works have plot twists and a peace full ending and are usually in the perspectiveof two characters. It consists of two stories in one. One a normal girl who wants to know the secrets of where she lives but is confined because of her parents and one who is a replica trying to survive after their building has been burned down. Each story intertwines into one another.

KatiaP Great ESOL strategies to use is 2 and 6 which is to promote cooperation (small groups) and continually monitor student comprehension. This is a bigger book so it is good to have classmates work with each other to build understanding and keeping an eye on where students are at and if they need help is crucial for books like this. UDL you use is foster collaboration and community (8.3).http://www.laurenoliverbooks.com/biography.php. #UCFLAE3414SP20 4y
DrSpalding This looks like an excellent book. This also looks like a book that would be appropriate for middle or high school students. Make sure the content in your books is appropriate for whatever audience you are teaching. 4y

I kinda liked the way this book was written. Having the choice to flip back and forth between stories was a pretty unique reading experience for me. I will say some of the drama was a little over the top for me, but over all I liked it even if it‘s not top shelf.

Creatively this book can be read one story at a time or chapter by chapter Lyra and then Gemma or all Lyra and all Gemma. It‘s an interesting concept, both physically as to how you can read the book and of the story itself, about cloning and how the subjects themselves relate to their very existence. There is a pretty significant plot twist which will make going in to the next book interesting as well.

I'll give this 🌟🌟🌟🌟/5. The idea was good and I didn't mind the storyline but the body shaming was a no go for me.

littlelisianthus I dont think it was body shaming so much as giving a POV from someone who has low self esteem. 4y

This was such an interesting way to read a book! The story is written from two perspectives and you flip the book upside down to read the second. I read one chapter at a time before flipping and reading the chapter from the other perspective. A really interesting story and I‘ll definitely pick up the sequel when it comes out.

Replica is told from the perspectives of two young women, Lyra and Gemma. You literally flip the book to the other side and read the back half of the book to read Gemma‘s perspective. While I read, I alternated between the two perspectives, switching after each chapter. Replica tells the story of an institute practicing cloning and the effects it has the lives of those connected, both intentionally and unintentionally.

I started with Lyra‘s story and I contemplated bailing on the book once it was finished. However, I powered through it and things started picking up again once Gemma told her story. It did give me a scare in some chapters which was kind of unexpected.

The ending was presumed but the storyline was unique. I love the idea of two stories in one and that I had to flip it. I wouldn‘t bail on the book completely.

Currently sitting outside in 5 degree weather (Celsius) with a hot cup of cocoa and nearing the end of this book.

One might ask why I‘m sitting outside in the cold but my answer is very simple, you see, I have three puppies (3 months) that love being outside but are always plotting on how to escape so I must watch. But fear not, I have a blanket wrapped around me while I sit in the sun.

The storyline was good but the way some of the dots were connected to get from one plot point to another were too far fetched. Two characters with different goals and in different places need to suddenly be in the same place? Boom - what a coincidence - they end up in the same place. And that same method of moving characters and circumstances repeated throughout the story. It was all just too convenient and for me it took away from the story.

I'm hooked. So much so that I have to run out to the library as soon as I'm done writing this to pick up #2.
I chose to read it in alternating chapters which was beautiful. I loved how they are seamlessly written so that they can be read as stand alone or alternating.
There were some predictable things, but honestly a lot of the time something new was revealed I was surprised too.
All in all a great read. Hoping #2 is just as good.
