This one‘s a light, fun read! Levine makes good use of both vampire and “woman in a romance novel” tropes without ever taking either too seriously.

Starting this light read and glad for a nice lighthearted cadence after finishing “Strange Sally Diamond.”

Got this through a Once Upon A Bookclub gift. Which is fun in itself.

Overall it was a fun, quirky romcom. Wish I had more to say. If you‘re looking for a quick fun read this one‘s pretty good. 3⭐️

Low stakes cozy romance with simple clear writing and straight forward plot; no guessing or serious business.

This was a cute, quick read. I grabbed the copy at my local library, not that I don‘t have shelves upon shelves of unread books at home.

The relationship between Cassie and Frederick is cute. They‘re both a little quirky, and I think that‘s what makes it work. If you like rom coms, I recommend trying this one out. There‘s a little spice, but not much. It‘s just a fun, fluffy story, like the TikTok cat videos Cassie likes to watch.

Cassie needs a new place to live and fast. When she finds an affordable apartment in a beautiful neighbourhood, she knows there must be a catch.

This book is sweet, funny, and hugely FLUFFY, especially for a book about a vampire. Definitely a rom-com, lighthearted but not too cutesy, loveable characters, and overall a fun read.

4/5

When Cassie sees an incredible apartment listing for only $200 a month, she's almost certain it's a scam or a serial killer. In reality, her new roommate is a vampire who is completely out of touch with modern society and is hoping to learn more about the modern world by having a human roommate. This is such a fun take on a vampire romance. I really enjoyed Frederick's attempts to understand modern life.

Not quite sure how I feel. One; hilarious rom com of a human helping a vampire out of a coma learn about modern times. Love that experience. Two; romance is unwanted and forced. Loads of teasing by and one really spicy back and forth chapter. The ending had me all off the course between what F‘s mom did and epilogue. Besides that, I did enjoy the book. Laughing out loud at antics. Wished there was more dating a vampire insight

So far I‘m finding this book hilarious. More so because of the vampires attempt at appearing like a normal person. We know he‘s a vampire, which is an interesting take. Not building the suspense, but starting with it. Reginald (side character) is amazingly spunky; hope to get more of him. Cute rom com. Only thing, as I usually don‘t like in romance books, is the first thing they see each other is “oh damn, they‘re good looking.” Not a fan

Roary47 I‘m a hate to love fan myself. I agreed to not like the immediate: “ooo you‘re cute” 🤢 6mo
Bookish_Gal @Roary47 I‘m all for enemies to lovers, when written out in due time. This book is not that book. This cute, but going way too fast. 6mo

This was an entertaining vampire romance. I consumed it quickly & the author paid proper homage to Buffy. I‘m also a sucker (see what I did there?) for a story told through letters or emails. However, it was FAR from perfect. Jealousy & possessiveness are romanticized. The characters don‘t exactly fall in INSTA-love…but not far from it. The ending feels very anti-climactic; some problems are too easily resolved & some aren‘t addressed at all.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: If you‘ve ever consumed *any* vampire media, you know that agreeing to meet them at a location of their choosing is ALWAYS a trap. Or, it should be…The ethical dilemma of stealing from a blood bank is touched upon but nothing is done about it (not even throwing money at the problem). And the age difference! The merest hint of a solution/proposition hangs in the air but even the solution has its quandaries. To be continued (in a sequel)? (edited) 6mo
monalyisha 2/2: Also, the author definitely needs to stay away from describing other people‘s professions. Librarians RARELY have downtime! Academics don‘t lack imagination! End rant. Still, I wouldn‘t caution readers *away* from the book. As Levine herself puts it (when (metafictionally?) describing something else entirely), it “felt like a bad plotline cooked up by a Jane Austen aficionado in the seventh circle of hell.” And honestly? That‘s just good fun. (edited) 6mo

Slow-burn, low spice. If that makes you not want to read it, that‘s fine. What I loved was the tongue-in-cheek antics of Frederick, a 300-year-old vampire trying to learn the ‘modern world‘ and ‘the Tik-Toks‘. It was cute, light-hearted and just a nice fun fluff read. I love a good vampire story and this one was a worthy contender.

This is a very cute, silly Paranormal rom-com. I would compare to Molly Harper, but not quite as laugh out loud funny. It was a quick easy read, though included some implausible moments, the main characters were quite lovable. 3.75⭐️

Panpan

Occasionally mildly amusing. The best part is probably Chicago-area references (and that's not saying much).

I would rate this between so-so and pan. ⬇

JoyBlue There is a bit of an uproar over on Goodreads over the rating of this debut. At least one person is having an absolute fit because others are rating the book poorly. While she hasn't read the book, she has given it 5 stars, and she's given a right tongue-lashing to others, shaming them for their opinions. ⬇ 8mo
JoyBlue What's the point of having a rating system if one can't trust it?! I'd much rather people be able to share their opinions freely. I'm an intelligent adult, perfectly capable of gathering information and assessing it according to my needs. ⬇ 8mo
JoyBlue For instance, I often check others' reviews and then compare our ratings on books we have in common. That helps me make an educated guess about whether I will feel similarly to that reviewer.

I'm pretty sure that debut authors and their publishers don't expect a hit right out of the gate. I don't think it's one and done, necessarily.

Thanks for coming to my “Ted Talk.“

CoffeeK8 It‘s funny, because a pan won‘t stop me from reading a book, but that type of drama would for sure. 8mo
Laughterhp Oh no! I was looking forward to this book. As to your Ted talk, I do the same. But I honestly only trust people I know from litsy that I follow on goodreads and their ratings at this point. 8mo
JoyBlue @CoffeeK8 If you read this, I hope you like it much more than I did! 😉 I'm with you—I like to weigh all the factors. One pan isn't going to stop me!

As for the drama, I just backed away slowly. I don't need that kind of stress.
8mo
JoyBlue @Laughterhp I hope your experience with this read is everything you want it to be! 😻 I never want to restrict another's reading choices based on my experience. I'm just giving you my thoughts to add to the mix.

I do love Litsy for its generally drama-freeness!!! While I'm occasionally frustrated with the non-star–based rating system, it actually has a lot of benefits.

JoyBlue @CoffeeK8 @Laughterhp [and everyone else]:

Funny story: I have an IRL friend who is also an avid reader. I read his reviews with interest, even though our tastes are quite different and our opinions rarely match up particularly well. However, he is so thorough and thoughtful in his reviews that I've developed a good sense for whether I'll like whatever he's reviewing . . . whether he liked it or not! 😄 It pays to assess with an open mind!

#BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks

This is a cute paranormal rom-com about a vampire who has been asleep for two centuries. When he awakens he decides to share his Chicago apartment with a roommate to teach him about the modern world. It made for some awkward and funny moments. Characters and plot was good, but felt the ending was a bit rushed and was not as seamless as the rest of the story. 3.5 ⭐️
