This is the first of the Penguin Little Clothbound Classics that I‘ve read and it won‘t be the last. I‘ve attended The Nutcracker many times but have, oddly, never read the story it is based on. I can say that I didn‘t enjoy the story as much as the ballet, but am still glad I read it. The other two stories in this book all deal with similar themes of imagination and seeing what isn‘t there/ghost stories.

This is a bizarre little book, possibly made more bizarre by translation. Am I glad I finally read it? Yes. Will it be on repeat in my holiday reading rotation? Probably not.

Ang203l At least it‘s a pretty edition?!? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
LeafingThroughLife @Ang203l It definitely has that going for it! Penguin sent me a whole adorable matching set of these little Christmas books back in my book blogging days. I ❤️ them! 4mo

My son loves nutcrackers & The Nutcracker. We get him a nutcracker every year.
This year I got him the one on the right which rotates and plays The Nutcracker Suite. My daughter got him the other bc she‘s starting college in a few weeks and will be studying Biomedical Science. It‘s a ‘Don‘t Forget Me‘ gift 😁

Eggs Ah these are wonderful👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1y

In 1892, Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, The Nutcracker, debuted. Because the ballet is set on Christmas Eve (and the hero is a nutcracker come to life), nutcrackers are still part of Christmas decor. Since my daughters and granddaughter danced in Nutcracker many years, it‘s an important part of Christmas🎄

❄️ excited for #jolabokaflod again this year!

❄️❄️ when I was 5 I wrote a secret letter to Santa for a nutcracker.

I told my mom about it on Christmas Eve. She procured a nutcracker the next day. Then she threw it out the window on the drive home so we could “find” the present Santa dropped out of his sleigh. It was the most magical experience.

I still collect nutcrackers and now have about 30. #wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1.The dance of the sugar plum fairy, Carol of the bells, The first Noel, Good King Wenceslas!
2. Among Christians in India, plum cake at Christmas is a tradition, and I love the smell of that! My grandmother bakes a delish one and we used to visit her every Christmas, haven't done that in the last 2 years because we don't want to expose her to infection.

TheSpineView I have never had plum cake. I will have to rectify that. 💚🎄❤📖📚 2y

This version of the classic story The Nutcracker is illustrated by Michael Weply and is full of pop up images. This dimensional storybook would serve well as a dramatic reenactment in the classroom since The Nutcracker is often performed through acting and ballet. A website resource that contains many activities and information for conducting this reenactment is https://klsriley.com/2012/01/28/nutcracker-lessons-for-elementary-music/.

emilypalkovich A UDL principle for this would be providing options for physical action since it is a ballet/play and the students can reenact it. An EL principle for this would be number five: teach technical vocabulary by supporting key concepts. This is useful because a lot of the words and concepts in The Nutcracker may be unknown to EL‘s. 3y
DrSpalding I love pop up books! You presented a neat idea with a dramatic reenactment of this classic story. 3y

This book was amazing!! The illustrations, the history (1816) and the story. It was much longer than I anticipated but I think this one might be added to my holiday traditions.

Eggs @Megabooks No, what was it about?? 4y
Megabooks @Eggs it followed a couple of years with the members of ballet west 1 (the main company) in Salt Lake City. In the dance studio/performance and in life. I became a huge fan of beckanne Sisk and follow her on Instagram now. I purchased the two seasons on Amazon when they stopped being available on Hulu, but keep an eye out for it on streaming. I really enjoyed it! 4y

We had one of these when I was a little girl so I couldn‘t resist bringing it home with me when I saw it at Goodwill. I only remember my mom having it out for Christmas and New Year‘s Day. In case you aren‘t sure what it is, I included a clue. 😉

A day late for the prompt, but I saw the ballet version of the #nutcracker today.

This was the first time I saw a ballet performance and it was a little weird watching a stage production with no spoken dialogue

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve never seen one! 5y
AnneCecilie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It‘s never too late to see ballet. And there‘s probably worse places to start than The Nutcracker. The story is known so it‘s possible to read up on the story 5y
eanderson I went a couple of weeks ago to see the Moscow Ballet. It was awesome! I‘ve seen it a couple of times. I have to say though, I do enjoy the movie version with Macaulay Culkin still. 5y

AnneCecilie @eanderson I didn‘t know there was a movie version with Culkin. I have to check that one out. 5y
Blaire @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @AnneCecilie I agree. I‘ve been going since I was little because my grandmother was a fairly serious ballet dancer before she got married but I think you can appreciate it even if new to it. The way they move and control their bodies is amazing! 5y
