Pickpick

This is a pick for me, but I predict it won't be for everyone. It is a slow burn, and while I enjoyed the plot device that was turning The Book into a narrator, the dialogue between The Book and Benny might be a bridge to far for some readers. Loved the emphasis on the importance of books in our lives, somewhat meh on the depictions of mental health struggles...

Anyway, first novel finished in 2022!

First book finished in 2022 and it was incredible. The author has a fascinating way of weaving together history and culture, and then tying both into his own personal life. Nearly every essay found me researching online to find a performance, or a picture, or more information about a topic. The writing was strong and poetic and tender and alive. An absolutely fantastic read.

This novel took a while to get into - its gorgeously written, but so so bleak. However, once I was engaged I was totally along for the ride. This has hard, upsetting subject matter, but so many interesting things to say about family, and religion, and strength. Will definitely be picking up the sequel.

I find this short volume to be a very interesting and illuminating read about the complexities that are inherent when a writer engages with Appalachia. I find it whets my appetite for learning more about the region. I do think the author at times betrays her anger at JD Vance and his book Hillbilly Elegy, and that pulls me just a bit out of the point she is trying to make. Overall, a really good read.
