Darling Rose Gold
Darling Rose Gold | Stephanie Wrobel
Nobody wants to hear the truth from a liar... In her compulsive, sharply-drawn debut, Stephanie Wrobel peels back the layers of the most complicated of mother-daughter relationships. For the first eighteen years of her life, Rose Gold Watts believed she was seriously ill. She was allergic to everything, used a wheelchair and practically lived at the hospital. Neighbors did all they could, holding fundraisers and offering shoulders to cry on, but no matter how many doctors, tests, or surgeries, no one could figure out what was wrong with Rose Gold. Turns out her mom, Patty Watts, was just a really good liar. After serving five years in prison, Patty gets out with nowhere to go and begs her daughter to take her in. The entire community is shocked when Rose Gold says yes. Patty insists all she wants is to reconcile their differences. She says she's forgiven Rose Gold for turning her in and testifying against her. But Rose Gold knows her mother. Patty Watts always settles a score. Unfortunately for Patty, Rose Gold is no longer her weak little darling... And she's waited such a long time for her mother to come home. This is very timely with the controversy over the Gypsy Rose Blanchard case getting so much attention recently. One would have to assume that some of the parallels are no coincidence even down to the names and parts of the story. It‘s an interesting take on what would have happened if the story had ended differently. I‘m not sure how I feel in the end of this one because both characters are unlikable in their own ways but sympathetic, as well.

This is a super uncomfortable read. Take a look inside the twisted mind of a psychopath and the messed up girl who was her longest lasting victim. There are many OMG and WTF moments that highlight just how damaging abuse and neglect are.

Literally everyone is this book is an unlikable asshole except for the baby and Anna. And while I understand Rose Gold‘s reasoning for wanting revenge, the way she went about it makes her no better than her own mom, if not worse. This was just not enjoyable when you don‘t like any of the people you‘re reading about.

Beautiful cover tho 🤷🏻‍♀️

JamieArc I had a problem with this book because it was way too similar to the true story. It felt like a lack of creativity by the author. 13mo
magyklyXdelish @JamieArc I knew going into it that it was inspired by it but yeah it comes off as less inspired by and more like beat for beat (almost). And the parts that were different I hated anyway. I was definitely let down by this one. 13mo

So this wasn't bad but it wasn't great. This was quite slow for a while with dual timelines from Rose Gold's life after sending her mother to prison and then life after she brings her mother home. There's a lot to unpack, a lot that doesn't quite add up and a whole lot of craziness at the end. I'll give it to the author though - there was one twist I never would have seen coming.

Not bad, but not what I hyped it to be in my head 🤷‍♀️

A very good read. I wouldn‘t say a thriller but pretty intriguing. I kept reading to try to figure out everything in terms of the direction the story was going. I was not shocked by the ending but it did come full circle and I appreciate that.

This book is similar to Gypsy Rose. Rose gold and the outside world a believed that she very extremely sick. Her mother, Patty Watts however was purposely making her daughter sick, just to get all the money from fundraisers and donations from their community. Patty got locked away in prison. Rose gold, got pregnant a couple years later, the father isn‘t in the picture. (More in the comments).

Allyson Frayn Rose gold met her biological father and his new family, who she doesn‘t like, they recently had a baby boy. Rose gold moved into her childhood home, the home her mother grew up in. Her mother soon after gets out of prison and Rose gold decides that she wants her mother to move in with her. As the story progresses, we see the hatred Rose gold has for her mother and so she put the same medicine that Patty gave her to her baby.(More in the comments) (edited) 2y
Allyson Frayn Rose gold runs away, leaving her baby and her mother, her mother gets sent to prison for trying to do the same thing she did to Rose gold to Rose gold‘s baby, also for the kidnapping of her ex‘s baby (Rose gold‘s father). So Rose gold kidnapped her half sibling from her father out of jealousy, and her mother took the blame.
The theme is the twisted relationship between Rose gold and her mother, Patty. (More in the comments)
2y
Allyson Frayn The theme is present, because Rose gold set up her mother and her mother got sent to prison. You can tell that their relationship is not that strong/healthy at all.
So if you like books that are thrillers, suspenseful Psychological thriller, Psychological Fiction, you‘ll like this book!
2y
Allyson Frayn I would say the point of view is 3rd person. Because in the end we see that Rose gold has ran away, but we also see the POV of her mother getting arrested. 2y
MissYaremcio This looks like an incredible book Allyson! I must add this to my to-read pile! 6/6 2y

It starts like a Dateline episode and ends up being more Stephen King. Munchausen by Proxy mixed with batshit crazy. Unreliable narrators usually annoy me but this structure of both sides (parent and child) really works. Entertaining, fast-paced and disturbing read.

This would have been great if I didn‘t know the true story of the Blanchards. I was looking forward to this because I know about the Blanchards. While this book plays out differently than the true story, I was really bothered by how many small details were copied from the real story. It felt a little plagiaristic and I wondered how an author lacked creativity to copy such simple details. May #Bookspin pick complete.

A twisty thriller. If you like Gillian Flynn‘s novels, you‘ll probably like this (it has some Gone Girl vibes with the two narrators, dual timelines, and utterly unlikeable cast of characters). A little slow in the middle, but the last third of the novel was riveting and made me see why those middle parts were important. I didn‘t want to put it down to go to sleep!

Mediocre start with a plot twisted ending ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. Overall I was disappointed that it did not dive into Rose Gold‘s childhood and Munchausen by proxy as much as I thought. I also found most of the characters unlikeable, which made the story difficult to get through at times.

Munchausen by proxy is morbidly fascinating to me. Clearly, Patty had her own issues that carried over from childhood, and Rose Gold was severely damaged by her. Neither narrator was reliable, and it was really hard to be on anyone‘s side. Great book! #newyearwhodis #BookspinBingo

This dark mother-daughter, cat & mouse revenge story left a bad taste in my mouth. The writing is good, and it sure was a page-turner. But I found this story horrifying and unsettling, and not in fun way. As it becomes apparent that this is a story of a cycle of abuse, it became really sad and unsatisfying. Not for me.

This book seems to be very loosely based on the real-life story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The book felt dark, heavy, and disturbing. The chapters switch perspectives, which is confusing at times because Rose Gold‘s perspective is from the years leading up to the present; Patty‘s is present tense. Most of the “twists” were predictable. Overall this book was well written but only so-so for me.

All aboard the Hot Mess Express! I was skeptical in the early chapters as it read identically to the Hulu series The Act (that the mom‘s name is Patty didn‘t help either.) But this takes things in a completely different direction as mom is convicted and jailed for her crimes rather than, you know. Told in flashbacks and present day following Patty‘s release from prison this was a wicked family saga that read like the most fascinating train wreck.

This was so good! Both main characters - Rose Gold and her mom, Patty - are exceptionally twisted and damaged and such a train wreck to watch. At first I felt lulled into the false sense that these women were funny and a little screwed up, but all in all somewhat misunderstood and scarred. Then as the story progressed I realized how sinister their thoughts and actions really were. Their snark seemed to be a joke, but it was far from it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
