So, I'm seriously rethinking the two Simmons books on my TBR, the last two books in the Hyperion series, after reading his tweet completely bashing a 16 yr old girl. The thought of a 72 year old "man" cyber bullying a child just boils my blood. #Magathugs #Magabullies #jerk

One of the best and most complex sci-fi novels ever written. Simmons, with a horror background, creates an antagonist in The Shrike, that is like no other. Highly recommend.

Highly inventive sci-fi novel centring round a three-way standoff between the Hegemony (world government), rebel human Ousters and the AI entities. Steeped in Keats lore, and the structure nods to Chaucer with each pilgrim recounting a piece of the puzzle of the fearsome Shrike and the mysterious time tombs. Gripping once you get into it.

At the beginning, I was worried. Shortly after that, I fell in love. This is a phenomenal read. Beautifully spun tales that keep one fully engaged and unable to put it down. Reading older sci-fi and seeing how on point it can be is always a treat. This is no exception. So glad I finally picked this up. Started a filler book, but immediately reading the rest of this series after that.

After years of avoiding it (based on reading SO many love/hate discussions) I finally decided it‘s time. It just felt right. So far, it a very enjoyable read. The storytelling makes it very interesting and keeps the pace. I can‘t say I am enraptured like so many people have. But it‘s early and I‘m holding out hope.

Getting some reading done on the bus while chaperoning my daughter‘s field trip to see the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (they did some scary atmospheric stuff like Wagner, but also Thriller, the Jaws theme, and Hedwig‘s Theme from HP—it was amazing). I‘ve had this on my TBR for ages, it‘s incredible so far. Wish the bus wasn‘t so bumpy though! 🤢

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The short stories woven into the main narrative format was not what I was expecting going into this book, but it worked (just don‘t expect the most satisfying ending). Some of the stories were stronger than others (I loved the priest‘s and the scholar‘s tales. Absolutely stellar ⭐️), but that‘s to be expected. It did take me a little while to get absorbed in the overall story. Simmons just drops you into the world and starts using terms⬇️

shadowspeak17 ...that are unfamiliar which made things a little confusing and hard to get into, but it did get clearer. Once I made it over that hump, I was hooked to the end.

Eeeeeee 80% in! This novel is actually stories layered into the larger framework. Seven pilgrims are selected to make one last pilgrimage to the Time Tombs on Hyperion, the apparent epicenter of a shadowy figure called the Shrike and the book is made up mostly of their stories of past skirmishes with the planet a la Canterbury Tales. Each individual tale actually starts a bit slow for me but completely suck me in before long. (Cont'd in comments)

This book is an exceptional example of science fiction. It is beautifully written, the story itself is entertaining (a plus that it's a retelling of a certain 14th century collection of poems), and the characters come to life. I look forward to reading the entire series.

Hyperion is a must-read for fans of cosmic/sci-fi horror. Think Event Horizon, told in a series of vignettes that take place across worlds with varying cultures. The book paints a picture of its universe through each POV as its ensemble cast moves inexorably toward something hellish and unknowable. Love this updated cover, and you can have the ebook edition for just $1.99 today.

In high school I gave a friend Hyperion for his birthday. He was so pissed at the massive #cliffhanger that closes the book. It is a gut punch when you realize this is how things are going to end but I love its audacity.

By the way, how metal is this cover I found online of the Shrike holding baby Rachel?

It is nice to see a properly four-armed Shrike. It's always described like that, but the cover art of my copy only shows it with two.

I'm revisiting this book through audio, so let me tell you about one of the best science fiction novels ever written, Hyperion.

7 pilgrims are headed to the planet Hyperion to visit the Time Tombs. Once there the Shrike will choose one, grant their wish, and kill the rest.

The pilgrims share their tales on the trip, Canterbury style. Horror, comedy, romance, and vengeance, parental love and detective noir. All brilliant. Check it out.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk #recommendsday The audio is only serviceable so far. Read the book. 2y

andrew61 Im not a huge sci fi reader but im going to stack this on your enthusiasm. 2y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @2BR02B It's unabridged and there are 5 credited voice actors. The 4 guys doing voices all just sound the same. The one woman does all female voices and I do not enjoy listening to her, which is a bummer because Brawne is my favorite of the pilgrims. 2y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @2BR02B Maybe I'm extra harsh because I just finished listening to The Violent Century and that narrator handled like 20 different characters with different accents, men and women, flawlessly. 2y

I found it kind of slow in parts, though it became more interesting as the plot developed. Each "tale" had its own style and narrative voice. This first book does not really stand alone, as it is basically the background stories of the characters and the set up for action yet to come in the second book of the series.
