When Samantha Morrow's husband leaves her and her eleven-year-old son she is faced with the terrifying prospect of having to recreate her whole life. After a few faltering steps she starts to put the pieces into place. She opens her house to a series of lodgers who each in their eccentric way help her to see herself. She fends off her mother, whose idea of getting over a failed marriage is to get a pedicure and get out there dating. And she makes a friend, King, an MIT graduate turned handyman, who shows her that she has the ability to make her own future and her own happiness . . .

On another day, I might have issues Samantha and her desire to keep a husband who doesn‘t love her. But today is not that day. This was a quiet book (and I‘m in quiet mood) about a woman who was lucky enough that when she couldn‘t realize her own worth at least discovered some new friends who revealed to Sam her value. In those dark and weak times, we should all be so fortunate.

sarahbarnes I‘m finally reading Fresh Water for Flowers and a review on the back compared it to Berg, who I might have to check out because I‘m loving the book. 1y
marleed @sarahbarnes This book garners 4stars on Goodreads but has dismal Litsy ratings. I really enjoyed it though. It just reminded of those times when people surrounding you know you are better than what you think yourself to be. 1y

The cover pretty much sums up the book. Depending on your mood and level of cynicism, this book is about a life imploding and the need to pick up the pieces and carry on OR it is insipid schmaltz. It was ok but not great. Any guesses as to my level of cynicism? Writing-B-. Characters-C. Plot-B. And there was black mold under jacket so had to take shot of inhaler. This date was a failure.

Texreader Ugh. Thanks for letting us know it‘s not so hot a book. 5y
Susanita Yeah I bailed on this one about ten pages in and never got back around to it. 5y
Nebklvr @Texreader Another book clubber gave it 4 stars so it might just be me 5y
Nebklvr @Susanita I don‘t think she is for me. Read Arthur Truluv recently and....meh 5y

I just love Elizabeth Berg and her captivating writing style! (Must read more😍) This one may have the familiar life after divorce theme, but her engaging characters give it a refreshing perspective with their eccentricities and insightful revelations. Not your typical #oprahbookclubselection tearjerker. Thought-provoking yet filled with light moments, too. And some very funny references to Martha Stewart. 😏

Meh... A quick read. One of those books where you know where the plot is going. No surprise here.

Ugh. Another book where the main character was meant, I suppose, to be likable. She just mainly came off as pathetic. I thought this book would be about the boarders that she opens her home to and how they profoundly change her and her life for the better. It's not. Instead, the MC spends most of the book pining for her ex, only to find a new love. Too predictable.

Reading this, I was reminded of why I don't read these types of books. I picked this out of a small assortment of books in a vacation condo and thought I'd give it a try. Way too shallow and predictable for me. It spent too much time on fluff and skipped over heavy topics in a paragraph or two. (Why even bother including the heavy topics?) Easy read, but not worth it in my opinion.

This book is the last book I have to read for the 2016 PopSugar Reading Challenge, and the rest are my first priorities after that. Max approves! #tbrtuesday
