TheAromaofBooks I keep thinking back to the earlier chapters where Cheltam wanted Brooke to make Dorothea wait to get married, and Brooke was pretty much like “whatever“ - was it better for Dorothea that Brooke let her have what she wanted and now she reaps the consequences, or for him to control her life more by forcing her into a long engagement that may have exposed Casaubon's selfishness before their marriage? 1y

TheAromaofBooks I definitely felt like Brooke's choice came from laziness, not a wish to see Dorothea live her best life. Dodo really annoyed me at first, but now I just feel so bad for her, and even somewhat admiring of her determination to still be the best wife she can be, even while she's realizing that Casaubon isn't everything she dreamed. 😕 1y
