Shadows on the Rock | Willa Cather

This is the story of a year in the life of late C17th Quebec told through the experiences of 12 year old Cecile, the apothecary's daughter. Cather's writing is as deceptively simple and startling atmospheric as always. I would have liked to stay with these characters for a few years more. I started this book knowing virtually nothing about the French settlement of Quebec, it has whetted my appetite for further learning. #CatherBuddyRead

Cinfhen Oh, this book sounds fascinating!! Nice choice for the prompt and great review 💜 4y

I know that everyone raves about this book, but I kept putting it off. I couldn‘t understand what would be so interesting about a man trapped in a hotel, and imagined it might be rather political.

Well, it‘s just the loveliest book and I didn‘t want it to end! The Count is delightful as are all of the other characters - read this book!

This book is an utter delight! Enchanting characters, witty dialogues, and I can‘t help but root for Miss Pettigrew who is honest, has a good heart, and quick to think on her feet. And what an extraordinary day Miss P had! There‘s one instance of racists remark, but I understand it‘s a different era. Lovely line drawings by Mary Thomsom and insightful introduction of the author in this Persephone edition. 👍❤️

#Booked2020 #hatheadcoveringoncover

Catherine_Willoughby Most books pre 1970s have some kind of racist remark especially 19th century novels . We must remember the times they were written in when such language was common place even among those who were not racist . If we ban every book with such words we would have throw away so many amazing novels. We can't change or wipe away the past by destroying Literature (or other such items). We can only learn from it. 4y
BarbaraBB Such a great edition! I have a grey Persephone edition of this one and will bump it up my TBR thanks to your review! 4y
batsy Such a pretty edition! It's on my TBR; sounds delightful. 4y

BookishMe @Catherine_Willoughby Agree with you. I try not to be sensitive to such books written then. Recently I became interested in a series set in Victorian England but published less than 10 years ago. I was surprised to find myself offended at a degrading description of an Indian staple - dhal gravy. I know its meant to reflect characters' attitude but it was poor choice of word by writer. And I couldn't bring myself to continue with the book 4y
Catherine_Willoughby @BookishMe modern novels try to hard to reflect the times they are set in. Each generation have its own mannerisms that we can comprehend as they did. I see it in my kids . Things or words that were common place are insulting to them even though were jokey said among us as teens. My adult son rubs it in , this is from "your time" It was only 20 years ago ! 80s/90s fads seem to be fashionable again. I lived it. That was enough. 4y
BookishMe @Catherine_Willoughby I think it can be confusing times for the different generations now. But I am glad that growing awareness is eroding prior prejudices 4y
Cinfhen Beautiful cover art and fabulous review 💝 4y
alisiakae Out dated and racist/antisemitic/homophobic language definitely arises when reading a lot of older books. Agatha Christie is one that come to mind quickly. I still read them, but make an effort to mention the presence of offensive language in my reviews. 4y
Nevertoobusyforbooks I loved this movie and I had no idea that it was based off of a book. This is definitely going in my TBR pile. Thanks for the review! 4y

I enjoyed this collection of Poirot stories - some are more developed than others, but each offered me a chance to read a story then move on to non-reading obligations. This was a reread for me, and yet I didn‘t remember many of the stories. Christie fooled me again...haha! #AgathaChristieClubR2

The story of an astronaut who returns from a mission (exploring planet outside of Earth‘s solar systems) without other members and with the large holes in her memory is interesting genre mushup between sci-fi and mystery/thriller. The story does not require an active reader, but with enough suspense and interesting psychological elements, this story was for me the right book at the right time. Not great, but simply readable.

Cinfhen Fun!!! 4y
