mcctrish This was an INSANE 2 chapters!!! First off, George is garbage!! It was bad enough his sisters were mean to Amelia, now his dad says she‘s isn‘t good enough for him AND he‘s a self absorbed douchebag?! 🤬🤬 then as soon as I realize Mrs Pitt is in her deathbed I‘m thinking #dearlordnottheoldmanproposingmarriage and then he does?! 🤯 but Becky is already married? Is this for real?! 8mo

TheAromaofBooks I was mind blown!!!! I actually think Becky would have done great as Sir Pitt's wife - she would have ruled the roost, bossed him around, and made sure she inherited everything when he died 😂 But WHAT EVEN!!! I was not expecting that plot twist!!!! 8mo

dabbe Becky being married is one of the best cliffhangers ever! Didn't Thackeray publish this as a serial? What would we have done back then if we had to wait a WHOLE MONTH for the next installment? #gobsmacked I also loved how Becky took down good ol' George. She put the “sarc“ in sarcastic! 🤣 8mo

AnnR @Dabbe That's a great point about it being published as a serial. The zingers Thackery sticks in some 'chapters' would definitely bring reader(s) back for more. They must have felt impatient waiting for the next installment but it also sounds fun. 8mo

I started reading this book 3 YEARS ago! When I got to the chapter “Books to keep” I put it down. I couldn‘t skip past it but I knew whatever she had to say would be crap. I. Was. Right. She ripped pages out of books to keep phrases, sentences, paragraphs that moved her? If the whole book didn‘t bring her joy give it to someone else. I know I‘m fixating but honestly WTF. I‘m the one who will be crushed to death by my tbr pile. Happily.

KathyWheeler I also have a problem with her statement that the moment you first encounter a book is the right time to read. Sometimes it really isn‘t; sometimes the right time for you to read that book is years after you first encounter it. 5y

mcctrish @Chelleo she starts with writing down her favourite passages in a notebook “40 books and that is too much work” then she is going to photocopy, again too much work ( #what), then it‘s ripping and gluing and again to much work so just rip and file. Honestly why does she have anything at all 5y

mcctrish @LoverofLit I guess with the Netflix series this has been coming up more and more. MK is qualifying her choices with the climate in Japan as very humid so books are easily wrecked by the excessive moisture and books are not as important to her as they could be to someone else. Obviously 5y

GingerAntics @Bklover lol I recently read a memoir about a woman who adores this book. It was actually pretty good. I knew if I was going to make this happen I was going to have to do it sooner than later. I got in the wait list for the audiobook and now here I am. So much strange theology happening here. It actually seems to give it a bit of a darkness. It just mentioned treading on a puppy!!! 6y

Bklover I started it right when I bought it ages ago and just couldn‘t do it. I replaced it with The Count of Monte Cristo, which was long too but way more fun!!! 6y

GingerAntics @Bklover it seems to be prattling about every little thing...it‘s almost a random stream of consciousness, but not about anything interesting. It randomly broke into Spanish at the beginning of chapter 2. I don‘t particularly like the main character. I‘m on the wait list for Count of Monte Christo. If that comes in right now, I‘m don‘t with this one. lol That one is much better. 6y
