Last Summer at the Golden Hotel
Last Summer at the Golden Hotel | Elyssa Friedland
A family reunion for the ages when two clans convene for the summer at their beloved getaway in the Catskillsperfect for fans of Dirty Dancing and The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselfrom the acclaimed author of The Floating Feldmans. In its heyday, The Golden Hotel was the crown jewel of the hotter-than-hot Catskills vacation scene. For more than sixty years, the Goldman and Weingold families best friends and business partners have presided over this glamorous resort which served as a second home for well-heeled guests and celebrities. But the Catskills are not what they used to be and neither is the relationship between the Goldmans and the Weingolds. As the facilities and management begin to fall apart, a tempting offer to sell forces the two families together again to make a heart-wrenching decision. Can they save their beloved Golden or is it too late? Long-buried secrets emerge, new dramas and financial scandal erupt, and everyone from the traditional grandparents to the millennial grandchildren wants a say in the hotels future. Business and pleasure clash in this fast-paced, hilarious, nostalgia-filled story, where the hotel owners rediscover the magic of a bygone era of nonstop fun even as they grapple with what may be their last resort.

Great Poolside Read.

Helpful that there was a family tree at the beginning. While I didn't confuse the characters of granddaughters I had trouble remembering which one was named which.

Liked that it included map of Hotel as well. Addition of Emails, Newspaper Articles, Tweets and even the Hashtags told a the story.

A lighthearted, fun, summer read. I really enjoyed the break from more serious reads and books with tougher content. The Goldmans & Weingolds spend their last summer at their family hotel. Three generations of each family spent most summers of their lives at the hotel so it's a tough decision on whether or not to sell. Each of the family members have other important things going on in their lives & secrets from the past are also surfacing.

What a wonderful story of 2 families and their influence on a beloved region. Beautifully written, I felt like I was right there in the hotel the entire book. Book 44 in 2021

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Enjoyable, although perhaps a little forgettable. I didn‘t feel that emotionally connected to the numerous characters and plot lines. It is a fun, light-hearted summer read and the audiobook was narrated well, but I just wanted a bit more. It‘s a soft pick for me! 🎧

This book made me nostalgic for things I've never experienced. But I'm of the Dirty Dancing generation so I FEEL like I experienced them! I loved the ensemble cast and their collective memories of the hotel as well as their current dramas. These two families were wonderful and the resolution of the central question, as well as the various dramas!, satisfied me. (Also I liked this 1000% better than The Floating Feldmans)

Catskills problems. There‘s an art to weaving a meaningful story around a cast of characters and keeping it all - cast and story - engaging. I liked the plot well enough but I didn‘t connect with the three generations and two families owning the Golden Hotel. Darn, I must have been in a mood for another genre.

Prairiegirl_reading I think you and I have the same tbr list. I have this one coming next week. Disappointed that you didn‘t like it because I think we have similar reading tastes. 12mo
marleed @Prairiegirl_reading I think we do too! After posting I scrolled down the posts for this book and realize I‘m alone on my so-so status for this book, so I attribute my reading experience to my mood rather than the author. The plot is solid and the setting is great - I mean the Catskills. Some authors just seem to pull me into character-driven stories more than others. 12mo
Prairiegirl_reading @marleed I‘m a total mood reader too. I totally agree about getting pulled in. I DNF so much and I can‘t even put my finger on why I don‘t get pulled in quite often. 12mo
ICantImReading I just finished this and felt similarly!! @marleed 11mo
marleed @ICantImReading It‘s so disappointing when I don‘t have feels for a book I was really expecting to love. I do own up to my reality that it‘s often my mood more than the talents that go into to creating a story. But still, dang! 11mo

Looking for a fun summer read with Dirty Dancing vibes? The Golden Hotel is the last Catskills resort in the once-popular Jewish enclave, and bookings are WAY down. A casino wants to buy the property, but 2 families, 11 people, and 3 generations have to want to sell. Of course amusing hijinks ensue as the families gather at the resort to decide. Definitely an enjoyable novel!

Thanks @Cinfhen for encouraging me to get this from #botm!

I expected to like this book, but I was surprised by how much I LOVED it! It is warm and funny with a heavy dose of nostalgia mixed in. The story is endearing while honoring a bygone era and still managing to nod to the future. Generation wars ensue, but the players eventually realize when they combine their values they can achieve the greatest outcomes. A perfect, fun summer read. ☀⛱

This was delightful. A fun distraction from the chaos. When a casino conglomerate offers a large sum of money to buy a family owned hotel in the Catskills, three generations will need to come together to reach a decision about a place that was once the gem of the Borscht Belt but is now a money pit. Will sentimentality prevail or can a large cash buyout fix the many secrets that are simmering?? A perfect lighthearted family dramedy #NetGalley

I‘m LOVING this #ARC #NetGalley as someone who “summered” in the Catskills this book is bringing back all sorts of childhood memories 🥰 This works for #Booked2021 #JewishMCauthor and #Pop21 #ThreeGenerations It‘s also a big fun throwback to Dirty Dancing 💃🏾 🕺🏾🍉

Anybody have experience with pre-orders on Amazon? I ordered these two on May 1st. Both come out on May 18th, and both say if you preorder today they'll be delivered on the 18th. But my order of Last Summer says delivery on June 30. I haven't pre-ordered anything from Amazon in a really long time, so idk if this is normal or a glitch that will be corrected or what.

Megabooks It‘s not normal. I don‘t know if you have prime or know how close you live to distribution centers, but I have a preorder for Tuesday that says it will arrive Tuesday. The only time I don‘t get it the exact day is if I order it the Saturday before release or later. I live two hours from my main distribution center. 14mo
Traci1 @Megabooks I do have prime and the nearest distribution center is 8 miles from me. So it's weird. Hmm. I don't necessarily need it day of release, but I'm not gonna preorder only to wait 5 weeks for it to get here. 14mo
Megabooks That is so weird. Perhaps call them at the customer service number. I‘ve generally had positive experiences worth their telephone service. 14mo
Clare-Dragonfly The estimated delivery date might simply be wrong. I‘ve had Amazon show me dates that were a ways in the future and I actually got the item much sooner. 14mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Jeez! I thought you ordered an international copy. 14mo
