Last Summer at the Golden Hotel | Elyssa Friedland
123 posts | 62 read | 1 reading | 43 to read
A family reunion for the ages when two clans convene for the summer at their beloved getaway in the Catskillsperfect for fans of Dirty Dancing and The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselfrom the acclaimed author of The Floating Feldmans. In its heyday, The Golden Hotel was the crown jewel of the hotter-than-hot Catskills vacation scene. For more than sixty years, the Goldman and Weingold families best friends and business partners have presided over this glamorous resort which served as a second home for well-heeled guests and celebrities. But the Catskills are not what they used to be and neither is the relationship between the Goldmans and the Weingolds. As the facilities and management begin to fall apart, a tempting offer to sell forces the two families together again to make a heart-wrenching decision. Can they save their beloved Golden or is it too late? Long-buried secrets emerge, new dramas and financial scandal erupt, and everyone from the traditional grandparents to the millennial grandchildren wants a say in the hotels future. Business and pleasure clash in this fast-paced, hilarious, nostalgia-filled story, where the hotel owners rediscover the magic of a bygone era of nonstop fun even as they grapple with what may be their last resort.

#12BooksOf2022 Day 7- July
This was such a fun read and had all the nostalgia vibes! The older generation is ready to hand over what they've built to the younger generation, but they're not quite sure they can handle it. The younger generation wants to make changes to what they see as an outdated way of doing things, but the older generation doesn't think it will work.
@Andrew65

July #12booksof2022 I‘m not sure this book would normally be a 5⭐️read but it was the impulse read I bought for the summer and it led me to #sundaybuddyread and in a totally roundabout way to this yearly book round up. My Sundays are so much fun now. This book was spectacular in its pacing for our weekly chats, always some dramatic bomb went off just before our chapter break. Litsy became a whole new place because of this book

TheBookHippie Yay!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️SO HAPPY to have you with us!!! 1y

If you love character driven novels, you will like this one. I love books with lots of characters and perspectives, it draws me into the story and I don‘t get bored. But not for you if lots of characters in a scene is confusing or uninteresting for you.

I really liked this book. It was the perfect summer read. I could just picture what it would have been like to spend a summer vacation at the hotel in the Catskills. I enjoyed all the characters and all the secrets that came out from their long history as hotel owners and friends and moving on with the next generations as they came together to decide whether to sell the hotel.

Read for the July #SundayBuddyRead this is the perfect book for any summer reading list. The author brings the Golden Hotel & summers in the “Borscht Belt” resorts of the Catskills to life. Lots of nostalgia, family dynamics & secrets & a mostly likable cast of characters as three generations the Goldman & Weinberg families try to decide whether to keep their fading hotel or sell it to a developer. A charming & engaging story that made me smile.💚

DebinHawaii Thank you to @TheBookHippie for picking it & for leading the always fun & interesting #SundayBuddyRead discussions! 🤗📚 2y

vlwelser Loved it. Perfect palette cleanse after that Emily Henry nonsense. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I am still salty about that unfortunate read ! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
Sargar114 This was such a fun summer read. The time lapses at the end were a bit discombobulating with the exception of the epilogue because that one was dated. 2y

mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie oh for sure. It‘s not your fault. It sounded like it had potential. I didn‘t even realize it was the same author when I saw it on the schedule so I clearly wasn‘t paying attention lol but it‘s so much fun either way. 2y

Librarybelle Definitely! I think the author really made the property stand out. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I like books with a strong sense of place and this was one for sure! I would go to the Catskills if I had the chance! 2y
AmyG The Catskills were a whole vibe. Definitely a character. I‘ve been to Grossingers! 2y
See All 11 Comments
CoffeeNBooks Yes, I definitely think so! I felt like I was attached to the hotel and could really visualize the setting. 2y
DanaManiac Yes! I felt like I could see and feel the past events in the Golden while we were in the present with the characters. It had such a presence! 2y
kspenmoll Yes, It was! It had its own character, presence, & really drive the story. 2y
mcctrish It for sure was and why it stunned me that they voted no 2y
DebinHawaii Yes, it was definitely a character & described so well by the author! 2y
vlwelser Maybe? It certainly took up a lot of space in the book. 2y
mollyrotondo It definitely was a character. It had its own history and story to tell. Loved spending time with it. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm going with no. I don't think the facility itself lent to the action of the book, (trapping people in a room, crumbling facades, etc) but it was one hell of a setting. 2y

Brain decides to raise the baby as friends

Aimee & Brain are together!

Aimee moves out! Hallelujah 💯
And she‘s going to be a grandma !

How did you like this ending? Would it have been better if they were allowed or searched their feelings as teens ?

Librarybelle Aimee and Brian seem to be a good couple. It‘s a shame they couldn‘t connect as teens, but maybe they needed the time to grow and to understand their attraction towards each other. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I like that they got together in the end. Who knows what kind of drama would have come from them together in their younger years. Sometimes it‘s the wrong time with the right person. 2y
AmyG Sometimes I just love a happy ending. (That‘s what she said) (edited) 2y
See All 13 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I think that for whatever reasons, it might not have worked out when they were younger, but now it will. 2y
DanaManiac I love this part too! I agree that it might not have worked out if they got together when they were younger. I‘m so glad she is free of Roger and has so much to look forward to! 2y
kspenmoll I liked the ending- this tale deserved a happy one! 2y
DebinHawaii I think things happened for the right reasons—like her 3 great children. It made my heart happy that they got together now. 2y
peanutnine Timing is a big factor for a relationship and I think they had to live their own lives before they found each other again. 2y
vlwelser I thought it was fun. Though trying to figure out how those boys are related made my head explode. 2y
Sargar114 It seems like with Brian, he would have stayed with Angela forever regardless so it was good she broke it off 2y
Sparklemn @AmyG 😂 (edited) 2y
mollyrotondo Definitely think they needed to grow as people before reconnecting. Timing is weird but I think later in life has worked out better for them. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I appreciate that Angela wasn't going to stay with Brian just because they made a bay together and that he's man enough to take his part of parental duties. I am a firm believer of timing and I don't think Aimee and Brian would've worked long term if they hooked up as teens. 2y

The vote
Last summer at the hotel 😭

A motel?!
Phoebe and Zach just friends for business sake…

How did you like this spin?

Fun article https://nymag.com/strategist/article/best-new-boutique-hotels-catskills-nyc.html

Librarybelle I guess boutique motels are now the rage, so at least the Golden legacy was kept alive. I was sad that they did vote to sell…my sentimental side got so attached to the place! 2y
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle me too! I wanted it to be revamped and I guess it was in a way. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I was watching Trixie Motel last weekend and then it turns out the kids open a motel! The whole idea is fun to me. I was surprised at Louise taking her two votes and voting to stay and to sell. I do understand that because one was vote was nostalgic and the other was for the kids. The hotel wasn‘t sustainable and it would have been handcuffing the younger generation to try to keep it open. 2y
See All 18 Comments
AmyG @Prairiegirl_reading Agree. It was time to move on. You have to know when to “fold ‘em”. I just think it was wonderful how the kids reinvented things…with the help of the older generations. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @AmyG it‘s continuing the legacy, just a different way. 💙 2y
CoffeeNBooks I was sad when they voted to sell the hotel. The story is just so compelling that I felt attached to the place. But I like that Phoebe and Zach opened the motel, and I love that even though the new generation has their own ideas, they're willing to get advice from Brian as "the older generation." I think this will really bring the families back together. 2y
DanaManiac I‘m glad to see that they found a middle ground. I think it was time to sell but I also think that the legacy of the Golden was important to maintain. 2y
Deblovestoread I think it was the right decision but my heart wanted it to continue. 2y
Karisa It was sad but also realistic. Best possible outcome probably. I like that they are continuing the legacy but making it their own. 2y
kspenmoll I really wanted them to hang on to the hotel but it would need so much $$& they did not have. I was sad but got why they decided to sell. Zac & Phoebe‘s motel Was reassuring that the legacy will continue 2y
mcctrish I legit said “what? What was the vote?” It was certainly more manageable, a year round gig and for sure would attract more people but still I was sad 2y
DebinHawaii Yes, a bit sad, but the best outcome for the families. It would have been too hard to rebuild & sustain the Golden. I love that they got Brian involved & that they got the sign & the picture of Benny & Amos. 💚 2y
peanutnine I agree with everyone's sentiments - it was bittersweet to sell the hotel but I was so glad they were able to carry on the legacy with the motel and gave the next generation a direction for their lives 2y
vlwelser This did not surprise me even a little. 2y
Sargar114 I agree with everyone. It was the right call; definitely bittersweet 2y
Sparklemn I love the Golden Motel. I was a little confused about where it was located. I'm assuming in NYC somewhere? 2y
mollyrotondo I liked this. The kids need something of their own to motivate them and to grow as people and this was the perfect thing for them. Modern but still can seek help and advice from family when they need support. It‘s the best thing for everyone‘s futures. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Bittersweet, but given the size of the place and just how outdated it was, I am not surprised by the outcome. I like that the grandkids made a kitschy boutique motel to carry on the legacy - something a little more manageable. I do think the offer amount for the land was a low-ball offer. I wanted Brian to realize the worth and entertain other buyers. 2y

kspenmoll That was so funny & current‘ 2y

DebinHawaii I rewatched the Mrs. Maisel Catskills episodes too & I am still going to try to get to this one this summer… 2y
DebinHawaii Also I feel the need for a Dirty Dancing rewatch too now. 💃🏻🕺🏻 2y
peanutnine @DebinHawaii I've got that book checked out from my library to read next! 2y
peanutnine Also I live near Lake Lure where they filmed the lake lift scenes from Dirty Dancing and every summer they have a Dirty Dancing festival there. We went a few years ago and it was so fun! They had a little museum display about the Catskills along with shag lessons, watermelon races, and a lake lift competition 2y
Karisa @mcctrish Sounds like a great excuse to go to Europe! And the first part of Season 2 centers around Rose running off to Paris! Someday I‘ll make it there again 🇫🇷 2y
Sparklemn @Kdgordon88 I would have loved it, too. We did summer weeks at lake resorts in Minnesota which were fun but in no way comparable to the size and amenities of the Catskills! Good memories, though. 2y
mollyrotondo So glad they are using the Go Fund Me money for a museum. It‘s a major part of history that needs to be preserved somehow. I‘d definitely go! 2y

The next door neighbor delighted at the downfall of Aimee or anything that went on with their lives … why are people this way ?

🤦🏻‍♀️

Librarybelle I don‘t know if it is jealousy on the part of some to act like totally horrible people or just a superiority complex in general. It‘s sad when people can take pleasure in other‘s misfortune. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading Some people are just assholes. 2y
AmyG Schadenfreude. I wonder if it‘s unhappy people who feel this way. 2y
See All 13 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I think it's probably people who are unhappy with their own lives for whatever reason, so they have too much time to think about other people's lives. 2y
DanaManiac Miserable people love to interfere, especially to wait for something bad to happen. It‘s so slimy! 2y
Karisa Some people do view life as a competition… It‘s too bad but glad that Aimee is moving forward. 2y
kspenmoll Agree with everyone. Neighbor unhappy, jealous maybe at what she sees on the surface, miserable woman, slimy as @DanaManiac said! 2y
DebinHawaii Yep, unhappy people who want to bring others down. 😡 2y

Librarybelle That was a second plot twist I did not see coming! How funny!! 2y

CoffeeNBooks I definitely didn't see that plot twist coming! Good for Louise that she can be relieved to know that Aimee is, in fact, Benny's daughter. 2y

DanaManiac That was wild! I‘m so glad to know she‘s not the pickle man‘s daughter! 😂 2y

kspenmoll Pickle man!!! 😂😂 I did not guess this at all! 2y
mcctrish Yay for plot twists 🤣🤣🤣 2y
DebinHawaii It was a good twist! I was happy for Louise and Aimee. Although those were some expensive pickles Louise bought! 🤣🥒🤣 2y
vlwelser That pickle man thing is still funny. 2y
Sargar114 This was a lovey plot twist too. I‘m glad that‘s how it ended up. 2y
mollyrotondo I mean what a question to have all these years. That‘s nice it was finally made certain for Louise but maybe it‘s more the guilt that‘s been haunting her this whole time. AmyG He was horrible. But, if not for that, Aimee and Brian would never have gotten together. 2y

DanaManiac Roger got what he deserved and Aimee is free from him. Yay! 2y
Deblovestoread Glad he is gone from Aimee‘s life and suffering the consequences from his actions. 2y
Karisa Glad there was some justice both in and out of book. Never seems like enough though with lives destroyed/lost. Sacklers were worth $10 billion in 2020. So now they just have $4 billion? 🤦🏻‍♀️😬😢 https://www.forbes.com/profile/sackler/?sh=cb0c1635d631 2y
kspenmoll Roger deserved what happened to him regarding prostituting himself to big pharma & destroying lives, including his family‘s- although in the end his despicable behavior freed them all. Read or listen to the 2y
mcctrish @kspenmoll I‘m going to look that up and Dopesick. I was plenty perturbed that Roger was still dealing right up to the end by the hotel despite the family home being raided ( I read that right ?) 2y

kspenmoll @mcctrish @TheBookHippie My husband read the book; I listened to it. The audiobook had some added material in the end about how this book affected the author & his family. It is read by the author, Patrick Radden Keefe. 2y
mcctrish @kspenmoll that makes it more intriguing 2y
vlwelser I sort of like that the author just dumped him out of the story once she was done with him. It seemed fitting. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser HA. Buhbye …. 💯 2y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I can‘t imagine having it all in your mind at once … 🤯 2y
Sargar114 @vlwelser I liked that too. I didn‘t want to spend any more brain power on him anyway 2y
mollyrotondo So glad Aimee dumped him and I‘m hoping he sees serious jail time. I hated him so much. He just got worse and worse. I was surprised Aimee and Brian still ended up together but they were better suited for one another than Brian and Angela (name check? Lol) (edited) 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I was really hoping to hear about his punishment, but glad that Aimee is free of him once and for all! 2y

The HUSSY is Andrews grandmother Maddies fiancé NOW HUSBAND grandma -bungalow bunny ??- the hoite toite
Esther now Esteé HILARIOUS
ALWAYS -that‘s always the way…

I loved this storyline ! What did you think of how Maddies story wrapped up?
also they eloped?! Bravo.

Librarybelle I just hope that Andrew can stand up against his parents. It does show, now that we know about his grandmother, that there is courage to do your own thing in the family. Maddie is happy, which is a good thing! 2y
AmyG I was happy Andrew turned out to be a good guy. And I will say, that generation was wild. They were just more discreet or they kept quiet about it. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I thought that was another funny twist to the story. I'm also glad Andrew ended up being a good guy, and I think Maddie is truly happy with how things turned out. 2y
See All 28 Comments
DanaManiac This was definitely a funny subplot! I‘m glad they decided to do their own thing, but I also hope Andrew is vocal in regards to his family. What they did to Maddie was horrible, regardless of whether or not his grandma was the secret “hussy”. 2y
Deblovestoread This made me happy. I‘m glad they are going to forge their own path. 2y
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac I agree, it doesn't dismiss how abusive they were. HOPEFULLY they will ban together as a couple and put up a very thick boundary wall! 2y
Karisa I liked this outcome too. I did not predict that series of events! Such a fun book! 2y
Karisa @AmyG Yeah, you are so right! The older generations had their scandals and rebels too. Time just mellows some of them out, I guess. My grandma and mom have great stories from back in the day! They were wild(ish) 😂 2y
AmyG @Karisa Someone told me once that my mother loved parties when she was younger. I was mortified. 🤣 2y
Karisa @AmyG We have an annual summer “Family Weekend” (women only) with my grandma and her sisters‘ daughters/granddaughters/daughters-in-law. We hang out by the pool and oh the stories! Most of my mom‘s are about “dragging main” 😂 Grandma‘s are about growing up after the dust bowl. 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa @AmyG my parents went to key parties.........I just CANNOT.....my grandma was a dance hall girl for her side job and made money to put her little brother 19 years younger threw private school because he was so slight public school didn't work........DANCE HALL GIRL. OY VEY. Otherwise she was at *Drumroll* the fancy department store counter ! She didn't get married until she was almost 30. SCANDAL. 2y
kspenmoll I loved this sudden subplot & how Andrew & Maddie took courage from it to please themselves! 2y
mcctrish @AmyG I was happy too! I was certain he‘d bail. I laughed out loud at his grandma‘s reveal 🤣🤣 2y
DebinHawaii I thought it was great. It gives Maddie some much needed “leverage” in dealing with them. Hopefully, as others have said, Andrew will stay strong & Maddie will be happy. 2y
AmyG @TheBookHippie Key parties! 🤣🤣🤣 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG Well my mother IS A shiksa 🤣🤣…. OY. 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG also I cannot look at fishbowls without remembering 🤐 2y
AmyG @TheBookHippie I know of many Jews who had key parties. You didn‘t have to be a shiksa. 🤣 2y
peanutnine @DebinHawaii I agree! She can't talk bad about the Catskills now that they know she was a part of them. I'm glad Andrew turned out to be a good guy. I just hope Maddie will be her own person with him 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🤣🤣🤣 well … there were lots of Jewish men there so 🤣🤣🙃😅 2y
vlwelser I thought this was great. Andrew pulled through for sure. 2y
Karisa @TheBookHippie We should have known you come from a long line of wild, free spirited women! Wowza! 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa 🤣🤣🤣 2y
Sargar114 I loved that little spin. It was such a funny closure. Seemed like Andrew figured he was being a bit of a tool and is working to make it right, so giving him some kudos. 2y
Sparklemn @Kdgordon88 That's how I felt, too. Glad he came to find her at the Golden and that all turned out well.. 2y
mollyrotondo I was very surprised he just showed up at the hotel on his own. I give him credit for trying to fix it. I still worry about the two of them rushing into marriage since they both seem to need to do a little growing and learning but they have potential lol yeah I‘m not surprised his grandma was a “wild” young woman because only a family trying to over compensate for their own scandals puts others down like that 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I love that you used this lady to represent Estee. LOL I'm glad Andrew seems to be able to think for himself a little bit and came to see Maddie. I don't know if they'll have a happily ever after, but they seem happy now. I'll take it. ( I also just realized I got sidetracked & didn't actually join in yet!) 2y

I had so much fun reading along with the group for the #sundaybuddyread. Loved the families and the setting in the Catskills. I had a little trouble remembering which grandparents, parents and children belonged to which family. Still a definite pick!

Prairiegirl_reading The family tree at the front of the book was definitely helpful! 2y
Sparklemn @Prairiegirl_reading That's one of the things I dislike about e-readers. I always forget to go back and look at the family trees and maps and other illustrations that are often included! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Sparklemn ereaders are convenient in lots of ways but that definitely isn‘t one of them! 2y

It was KILLING me to stop reading at all the #sundaybuddyread predetermined sections and now that I‘m finished it, I‘m so sad!!! What a perfect summer read! I loved everything about it, the history of the Borscht Belt, the multigenerational story, the twists and turns and the ending. I picked this book up because it had summer in the title and discovered a few days later @TheBookHippie was doing a buddy read with it ❤️❤️ July has been wonderful

What a perfect book to read during the summer! It makes me want to watch Dirty Dancing on repeat and has a beautiful nostalgic feel to it of the bygone era of family resort vacations in the Catskills. Told in multiple viewpoints, this novel is the ups and downs of operating the last remaining resort in the Catskills and all of its complications. It‘s hilarious in parts with a sweet ending. Perfect choice for #SundayBuddyRead !

We get to finish it now !!!!!

Any predictions ??

As always thanks for Sundays and discussions.

Perfect July book for me, how about you?

Librarybelle Perfect July book, indeed! I hope they save the Golden…I‘m loving a lot of the ideas the younger generation has. 2y
kspenmoll I loved it for a July read! 2y
AmyG I am hoping, too, that the Golden gets reinvented. This book has brought me alot of memories. I wish I had some pictures from my childhood at all these hotels. My step-father had all our photos in slides….who the hell knows what happened to them? 2y
See All 28 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I have to read the last section right now before it's due back later today and my library download automatically disappears. 😂 I am so ready to find out how this story ends, though! I hope it ends on a good note! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I was enjoying the first two sections but I was behind for discussion but this section!? Not what I was expecting! I‘m trying not to have expectations because I have been so pleasantly surprised so far. I do want the hotel to stay open though. And definitely for Roger to get what he deserves! I can‘t wait to find out what happens! 2y
mcctrish I posted my predictions on the last slide 🤣🤣 and now that the end is near I don‘t want to immediately finish it and have this spectacular story end. This was a great summer buddy read, I‘m so glad I jumped on this bandwagon. I‘ve bought the next 2 already and I got a gift card for my birthday to buy the rest to finish out 2022 🎉🎉#mysundaysarebooked 2y
Sargar114 @CoffeeNBooks that happened to me this week! I had to run to my other library to go pick up a physical copy 😂 (I actually think I‘m enjoying it more in physical copy more) 2y
Sargar114 Only predictions I have is that if they sell this would make a wonderful little movie but if they keep it and build it up would love to see it as a tv show (oh the directions it could go!!!). Really enjoying this fun little ride 2y
Sparklemn It‘s a perfect summer read. Great pick!! 2y
CoffeeNBooks @Sargar114 I didn't finish before it disappeared from my phone. And my library doesn't have any physical copies available, either. 😭 I got on the waitlist again and hopefully I'll get it soon! 😂 2y
Deblovestoread @CoffeeNBooks I have finished my copy and will send it to you tomorrow! 2y
TheBookHippie @Sparklemn after last months debacle I‘m so glad this is this much fun! Well, we have fun anyway but this IS a good read! 2y
DebinHawaii I made my predictions or musings on what I hoped happens on the last post. But to recap I am hopping besides the Go Fund Me there is additional money to get the renovations done & the Golden continues on. And that Roger has a lovely time in prison! 😆 Loving this book for July-I may have to finish early. @TheBookHippie Hope you are ok after the gluten & you feel better! 💜 2y
julieclair They have to keep the hotel!!! Bring back the Borscht Belt! I agree that this was a perfect July read. Can‘t wait to finish it! 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii finally upright without cramping. I had lucky charms dry as a snack before bed -apparently there are massive reports of people getting sick after eating them according to the inter webs 🤯😡. I won‘t eat them again they are supposed to be GF. 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄 2y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish HA!!! ♥️♥️♥️ I‘m so glad you joined in. We have a lot of fun. Even when the book is bad like last month🤣. We‘ve had some great times on Sundays these past 5 years! So happy to have you and your input! (edited) 2y
julieclair @AmyG My childhood is all on slides too. I have a gizmo that will convert them to digital… one at a time. A rather overwhelming project. 🤪 Do you ever go back to the Catskills now as an adult? 2y
mcctrish @Sargar114 oh I‘d love either of those predictions to come true 🙏🏻🙏🏻 2y
mcctrish I‘m glad you are feeling better Christine 2y
AmyG @julieclair My sister was in charge of the slides. She got a bunch digitalized but I am not aure if ahe even has them all. And I live in CO now. The last time I went was to the Concord in 1986….and it was really run down. We had a leak ON our bed which woke me in the middle of the night (drip drip). It was really very sad. 2y
CoffeeNBooks @Kdgordon88 Thank you so much!! That's so sweet of you! 2y
julieclair @AmyG That is really sad about the Concord. We had a similar experience when we spent a horrible night on the Delta Queen paddlewheeler about 10 years ago. Such an old beauty, but it was in no condition to be used as a hotel. 2y
Catsandbooks I am behind but will try to catch up for the end! 2y
peanutnine Loving this read so much, and reading everyone's thoughts and reactions. It makes it even more enjoyable! 2y
TheBookHippie @peanutnine I so agree!!! 2y
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks 🎉🎉🎉 it‘s such a fun read! 2y
mollyrotondo Love this one! It moves so swiftly and I just want to keep following these characters. Excellent read and great for summer vibes! I definitely want the Golden to stay open and for everyone to work as a family unit again. And Roger needs to go to prison and Aimee needs to figure out what she wants to do with her future without Roger. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This one had been fun, entertaining drama... perfect for summer. I hope the hotel is saved and the different generations come together to run it. I‘m sure I missed something
What made you gasp???

Librarybelle I‘m not sure about gasping, but Louise and the pickle man was the biggest surprise. Roger showing up made me groan. The casino and its descriptions made me laugh. I hope Peter can pull his family together and show them how much he cares. 2y
kspenmoll So much going on! I really enjoyed getting to know Louise, & her relationship with Amiee. Of course the pickle man story. 2y
AmyG Yes, quite a few surprises. Every family has their secrets. I am guessing that the possible sale of this hotel brings this family back together…except for Roger. He needs to GO. I am hoping they choose to reinvent the Golden. 2y
See All 16 Comments
vlwelser Louise and the pickle man was my fav. But also Michael and the hairdresser and how Aimee reacted to the whole thing. 2y
CoffeeNBooks There was so much in this section! I think this section, more than in the previous sections, really showed the true character of all of the characters. Aimee and Zach are still my favorites, but I have a better appreciation for some of the others. But Roger is just a horrible man. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading Louise and the pickle man, Benny‘s questionable actions, the baby, Michael and the hairdresser! Loved it all! I really laughed when Louise got pooped on at goat yoga! Like of course it was Louise!! 🤣🤣 2y
mcctrish Honestly this book is becoming “How Aimee gets her groove on “ for me. She‘s going to let Roger rot and the Golden will live on, she will work there and so will Zach. Peter can provide counsel. Phoebe doesn‘t get to stay cuz she‘s mean 2y
Sargar114 I like it @mcctrish! I was really thinking they were going to sell but the gofundme really throws a wrench in that! This has been such a fun read! 2y
Sparklemn @Librarybelle I confess that casino slots are my guilty pleasure. 🤫The casino descriptions were spot on! 2y
Sparklemn @mcctrish Cuz she‘s mean. Love your reasoning!! 😆 👍 (edited) 2y
DebinHawaii Nothing made me gasp but I liked the fast & furious twists that are making this book interesting & entertaining. I am most intrigued about the Go Fund Me & what Amos knows about Benny‘s betrayal & keeping🤞🏼that somehow that it is going to end up good with getting them enough money between the two to renovate & keep the Golden. (And that vile Roger goes to jail!) 🤣 2y
DebinHawaii And @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣(Phoebe) 2y
julieclair Louise and the pickle man made me gasp in a “you‘ve got to be kidding” kind of way, and Benny stealing from Amos made me gasp in a “oh no this is so sad and I don‘t want to believe it” kind of way. 2y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Phoebe 💯 2y
mollyrotondo Definitely was shocked by the pickle man story lol but I just love seeing how other people want to keep the hotel going and not just members of the family. The community element is really nice and surprising too because Friedland just gives us little tastes of it. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The Pickle Vendor giving Louise the ol' pickle tickle, Michael getting a blow out, ther pregnancy... so much happened here. My cousin's baby shower next month will likely pale in comparison to this family drama. I did like the line in Ch 16 - Whether Brian "liked" her or "like-liked" her was irrelevant. No matter how old you get, you still want to be like-liked. ❤ 2y

Well a pregnancy for BRIAN …🤯

Go Fund Me - WOWIE 🤯

Phew this section WAS A LOT 🤯

Where is the baby story going ?
What conversation will they have ?
I can‘t see either of them wanting to be together?

Librarybelle I wonder who started the GoFund Me! The pregnancy storyline is a little surprising to me, but with all of the little secrets coming out, it shouldn‘t really be surprising. This last section should be a ride for sure! 2y
kspenmoll Not sure what will happen with the pregnancy-0these two seem to only have the hotel in common…Go Fund Me campaign seemed to give people a chance to share memories & give back to the hotel. 2y
AmyG I, too, was surprised by the baby storyline. I still wonder if Brian and Amiee get together. I just don‘t see him with the girlfriend who has given him a way out, telling him he doesn‘t have to marry her. Maybe they just co-parent. 2y
See All 16 Comments
vlwelser Why do these books get so good in the third section and then it's basically over because I'm about to go devour the last section? That might be a me problem. 2y
vlwelser And the baby thing is weird. No idea what the author has planned there. 2y
CoffeeNBooks The baby storyline feels like one too many plot twists, but maybe it will all make sense in the last section. I really want to know who started the Go Fund Me- what great stories people are sharing! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading So much happens in this section! It was really difficult to stop at chapter 24! 2y
mcctrish I love the Go Fund Me storyline!! Fanny etc reaction is priceless, they‘d rather go down in flames 🤦🏻‍♀️ the pregnancy seemed like a mother mail in Aimee‘s coffin to me BUT she can‘t go from Roger to Brian. My head was spinning with all the twists 2y
Sargar114 After the pregnancy announcement I can‘t imagine a future for Aimee and Brian. Ultimately that‘s probably for the best though, they seem to each need to find their own way. Also, have we ruled out Phoebe or Zach doing the gofundme? Phoebe is the influencer with internet saavy. Zach with his secret business saavy? 2y
Sparklemn @CoffeeNBooks I agree about the baby being one too many plot twists. It seems unnecessary. 2y
DebinHawaii I think it was the author‘s way of not making Aimee & Brian an immediate couple. I like them both but Amy needs to kick Roger to the curb & stand on her own for a while. I do wonder about who started the fundraiser. Is it someone in the family group? This next section will be interesting. I usually make myself wait until the Saturday before the discussion to read but I might have to make an exception! 😱 2y
julieclair The whole baby thing seems so out of left field. I have a feeling that something will happen there… like maybe the baby isn‘t Brian‘s, or worse, she will have a miscarriage. And Aimee will comfort Brian in his grief, paving the way for them to end up together. 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I wait as well so I can discuss with all the late posters but …. It‘s going to be so hard to wait!!! 2y
DanaManiac The baby plot twist was surprising. I feel like I could see it going either way- him staying with the girlfriend that he doesn‘t love or him taking a risk for Aimee, hoping that her own messy situation will give her an open mind. 2y
mollyrotondo I‘m more interested in the 5Bs and the GoFundMe. It could be a group of people who started the campaign or it could be Scott (is he that unaware just because he‘s at school?). I love the IG thread showing all the people who still love the hotel and don‘t want to see it torn down. It‘s really lovely when people come together to support something that brings joy. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick With the pregnancy announcement, I doubt Aimee & Brian pair up, though I still want to see it. (Maybe a Next Summer epilogue hints at something.) I couldn't figure out who might've started the GoFundMe... maybe Maddie's bf? Maybe the Pickle Vendor?! 🤣🤣 Gotta keep his potential daughter's legacy alive. 2y

Phoebe drops two bombs
“This is just fun”
And oh hey your dads a drug lord (Roger)

What do you think of Phoebe?

Librarybelle Phoebe is a shrewd businesswoman. I guess she picked up a lot of her know how from Peter! 2y
kspenmoll Phoebe is smart, savvy, creative- I think she was naming the real villain in the family. 2y
AmyG She seems to be the new generation businesswoman in the family. I wonder if she winds up involved in the, perhaps, running of the new hotel??? If it‘s not sold? 2y
See All 14 Comments
vlwelser She seems to be the spokeswoman for the generation Brian was talking about. The young people that don't care about offending people. I was a little surprised she dropped that bomb at dinner. Maybe I'm in the older group 😂 2y
CoffeeNBooks I felt so bad for Zach when she said that, especially since it was in front of everyone. @AmyG I'm wondering if she'll be involved in running the hotel, too. 2y
mcctrish I‘m not a phoebe fan right now 2y
Sparklemn I don‘t know how I feel about Phoebe yet. I go back and forth between admiring her directness and spirit and cringing at her thinking she knows everything about everything. 🤷‍♀️ 2y
Sargar114 When Zach confided in her I was super worried something like this would happen. She is coming off as pretty terrible as well. 2y
julieclair I agree with @Librarybelle and @kspenmoll that Phoebe is a shrewd, creative businesswoman. But her ego needs to be taken down a notch or two and she needs to develop some tact. Hopefully those are things that will come with maturity. (edited) 2y
DebinHawaii I was liking her until the dinner. I have no issue with her calling out vile Roger but hurting Zach (& Maddie) especially to do it there was not kind. Also the “we‘re just having fun comment” while maybe understandable given the meddling family was also unkind. 2y
TheBookHippie @Sparklemn I‘m chalking it up to youth but I agree… 2y
DanaManiac Phoebe has a lot of growing up to do. She‘s not wrong, but the delivery was horrible and you learn as you get older that delivery really matters. 2y
mollyrotondo I am not a fan of phoebe even though I think she‘s what the hotel needs in order to revitalize the hotel and draw more business. But she has no tact and she needs to learn to not walk all over people who are close to you because then you‘ll have no one on your side. Zach should be an ally and not a plaything. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Phoebe isn't my favorite, but I like her. She's knowledgeable with modern marketing/ social media and seems to care about the hotel. It would be great if the different generations commit to working together. I, too, like to poke the bear and might share the bad news about Roger at dinner, but I do feel bad for Zach. However, if we're rooting for Aimee/Brian pairing, a Phoebe/ Zach one might be a bit weird, too. 2y

Peter and
Greta
Thoughts?

Librarybelle Peter seemed to be a bit clueless how his workaholic tendencies destroyed, or nearly destroyed his loved ones. I think we learn a bit more of why Greta is the way she is, and I feel bad. I hope Peter‘s realizations will make him change his ways, and that he will show Greta how much he cares. 2y
kspenmoll Peter‘s work obsession at the expense of knowing his kids & spending no time with Greta unless work function allows us to see Greta in a different light. 2y
AmyG I feel bad for Greta. I am hoping, now that Peter seems to realize what his workaholism did to his family, he is able to “make up” for lost time. He seems on that path. 2y
See All 17 Comments
vlwelser I'm starting to like this pair. 2y
CoffeeNBooks This helps make more sense about how Greta is. It's too bad the Goldmans call her "Greeda." I don't think they would if they knew her story. I feel bad for Peter that it took until his kids were all grown up to realize that he missed out. It's good that he's at least trying to make up for lost time now. 2y
mcctrish Once Peter showed up I felt he was immediately likeable. He gets how is tunnel vision for work has had consequences. I gasped out loud when Fanny called Greta Greeda, I thought it was mean, to me it was obvious why Greta was doing all the things she did 2y
Sparklemn @mcctrish I found him and Greta more likable, too, than I expected. It was nice! 2y
Sargar114 Agreed @mcctrish And I‘ll add that in comparison to the last question, notice how Peter defended his wife when insulted. 2y
Sargar114 At first I was annoyed at getting yet another perspective but ended up really enjoying Peter. Nobody‘s perfect and he‘s discovering his shortcomings and trying to do better. It seems in character for what he know about his teen years. Who knows if it will stick once he leaves but is making for a likeable character. I‘m randomly hoping he offers Zach a job with his firm. 2y
DebinHawaii I liked that Peter is trying & likable & hope that the changes he is making in himself stick. I loved his scene with Michael & also with defending Greta too. It does seem like Greta has gotten somewhat of a bad rap in the family. 2y
julieclair I think Peter has had a revelation, and will work hard to curb his workaholic behavior. But I feel so sorry for him, for all he has missed, and even more sorry for his family, for not having him present in their lives for all those years, and feeling like his work was more important than they were. 2y
DanaManiac I find Peter to be very likable because he had the right intentions and was able to pivot once he realized it wasn‘t working for his family, even though it was quite late in the game when he did. 2y
mollyrotondo @Sargar114 exactly! This sealed the deal for me on liking Peter 2y
mollyrotondo I am so glad Peter came to the hotel. He seemed like a cold jerk but I really like Peter and Greta as a couple. They lost their way after children and work took over each of them and now they can give themselves a second chance. Peter seems like a good guy. 2y
mollyrotondo Also another comparison: Peter v. Roger. Peter was absent because he was working for his family. And yes he could have done better but he‘s realizing now that his family needs him and not just the money he brings home to them. Whereas Roger does everything for himself. Selling drugs was so he could live a lavish lifestyle. He‘s dishonest through and through and continues to make excuses for himself and act like he deserves pity for his behavior 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo Ughhhh Roger. Complete narcissist … I hope jail is where he ends up! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It was nice to hear from Peter since this section made him human and not a workaholic caricature. He stuck up for his wife, had a nice heart to heart with his son, and hopefully starts to change his ways. He's earned and likely has decent investments. Maybe he'll be more involved with his family and the Golden. 🤞 I like to hope that these twin sons will come together. 2y

Maddies boyfriends family…
Yikes
Were you surprised to see her boyfriend show up?

Also hey that‘s my grandma ?! 🤯

Librarybelle Andrew‘s family seems to be the stereotypical rich white family - no surprises from me about their attitude towards Maddie and her background. 2y
kspenmoll I agree with @Librarybelle Another book I am reading also addresses the hierarchical structure/ per money status in Jewish communities 2y
AmyG @kspenmoll Yep….the hierarchial structure/money….I know it well. In my case it had to do with a generation that emigrated from Europe, where they were or felt more entitled than in the US. (edited) 2y
See All 17 Comments
vlwelser This was just mean. I'm glad she walked away. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I felt so bad for Maddie- how horrible to have your family spoken about like that, right in front of you. And the fact that Andrew said nothing in her defense is awful. 2y
mcctrish I am glad she walked away sooner than later 2y
Sparklemn @coffeenbooks If he had defended her, I might have said give him a chance. But when he didn‘t? Kick him to the curb, Maddie. (edited) 2y
Sargar114 I‘m so glad Maddie left. If he can‘t defend the woman he allegedly loved to his mother then he clearly doesn‘t love her 2y
julieclair To speak about her family like that… just goes to show that money can‘t buy class! 2y
DebinHawaii His family is a stereotype for sure & it sucks he didn‘t defend her but it sounds like he is under their thumb. I‘m glad she left. (But it sounds from the question like he is showing up at the Golden which doesn‘t surprise me!) 😉 2y
slategreyskies I was surprised he could recognize his grandma. I don‘t think I would‘ve been able to recognize mine in a pic from when she was young. 2y
DanaManiac @Sparklemn yeah I wonder what happens next for them because I wouldn‘t have put up with that nonsense. 2y
mollyrotondo What catty women! I‘m glad Maddie left since she didn‘t seem like an independent enough character. I‘m glad she didn‘t just cling to Andrew after that whole rude mess. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick To quote the great Stephanie Tanner, "How rude!" Overhearing comments would be one thing, but talking shit to her face, whether or not he spoke up for Maddie, I'm glad she left. You don't have to love your in-laws, but jizzy crizzy, have some damn respect for them and their family, until they do something truly heinous. His mom sounds like a right little bougie bitch and I hope Maddie holds out for better in-laws. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Did you stumble on this photo or did you have it and purposely picked it? Go grandma! Get down, get down! 🤣 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick my great research which I thoroughly enjoy. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick these in-laws make mine look tame … 2y

Roger …vile man
He has to text worried about the price of the hotel?!
Then he shows up?‘
And doesn‘t care she cheated
Just money
Plus blaming her for his actions?!
Plus telling family secrets?
What an awful person
Did he ever love Aimee?
Why did he send for the other son?

Librarybelle Roger is a creep! I think a lot of my suspicions were confirmed with his character by the random show up. We ended on a perfect cliffhanger with this week‘s reading! 2y
kspenmoll Roger is a vile man. Enough said! 2y
AmyG She needs to divorce him. He shouldn‘t get a penny from her. 2y
See All 20 Comments
vlwelser Roger is the worst. He needs to go away. 2y
CoffeeNBooks Roger is awful. I can't believe he showed up at the Golden. What a jerk! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I thought it was bad enough for him to put pressure on Zach to sell but then to show up!!! And to be so unbothered about Aimee and Brian! Ugh I wanted to slap him! 2y
mcctrish For Roger‘s sake I want the hotel to survive and thrive ( I mean for Aimee and Brian etc.. too) but I want him to just rot. I know Aimee has to come into her own on her but his dismissal of her and Brian just cements he doesn‘t care at all 2y
Sparklemn Blaming his awful behavior on Amy being so “perfect” and not feeling accepted by her family and friends was despicable!! (edited) 2y
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie thank you for mentioning the not caring about her cheating and the victim blaming here. Now THAT was a throw the book moment. He is a terrible human being!!! (edited) 2y
julieclair Roger is concerned only with one thing: money. He overlooks everything I his pursuit of it. First becoming a vile pill pusher to support a lavish lifestyle, and now not caring about Aimee‘s hookup with Brian because he is so focused on selling the hotel so Aimee‘s money can keep him out of jail. He totally deserves jail time, and Aimee deserves to be free of him. 2y
DebinHawaii He is a very bad person. I think brining the other son (I just forgot his name) is to have someone who has been disconnected from the family & all the nostalgia that he thinks will be a vote for selling. 2y
Deblovestoread Roger is evil and a complete *ss. To expect Aimee to turn over her share to save him, unbelievable. I hope he rots in jail. 2y
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I threw the book…. Ugh. 2y
slategreyskies I can‘t stand Roger. Ugh!! 2y
Karisa I keep thinking Roger is going to get away with his drug dealing. Didn‘t the manufacturers themselves just pay fines (a fraction of the profits they made)? Thanks for sharing the article, at least some had consequences for the part they played. 😢 2y
DanaManiac I couldn‘t believe his response to Amy‘s confession. He‘s so single-minded and focused only on saving himself from the mess he‘s responsible for creating. 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa He'd better got to JAIL!!! ugh.....I hope he loses everything! 2y
mollyrotondo This guy is the true villain of the story. There is nothing redeemable. He only cares about himself. To blame Aimee and her family for being so “perfect” that your only option was being a drug pusher, an opioid dealer? Uhh crying me a river. He wanted that lavish lifestyle and didn‘t care who he hurt to get it. And then to be more worried about Brian‘s vote than his marriage? Uhhh he definitely called Scott so he could get a “sell the hotel” vote 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Roger is an asshole. The character isn't meant to be redeemed. If he balked at Aimee's admission of sleeping with Brian, he'd prove he at least loved her. He loves himself and by inviting his other son, that just tells me he thinks he can get his support toward selling the Golden and is only thinking about helping himself. What a douche canoe. (Sorry to my guy, named Roger, who insists it's a name for unsavory characters.) 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I cannot with Roger 🙄🤢😡 2y

So the hairdressers chair incident ….

Well. Now they know.

Thoughts ?!

Librarybelle Another hilarious way for the pieces to fall into place! Everyone‘s reaction to the scene does fit with their characters - it does seem a little surprising that Amos and Fanny were completely in shock, but I guess they had their own version of Michael in their minds that fit with their expectations. 2y
kspenmoll This scene like so many shows us the characters in funny/unexpected situations. I live Michael‘s character- so authentic. 2y
AmyG While this seemed a little over the top, you knew they were going to find out. 2y
See All 20 Comments
vlwelser I loved this. Michael clearly wasn't very discreet with his "secret" This book is fun. 2y
CoffeeNBooks Poor Michael, although the hairdressers probably wasn't the best place to go to be discreet! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I thought this was hilarious! 2y
mcctrish I kept thinking but what about Aimee‘s hair 🤣🤣 2y
Sparklemn @vlwelser It is fun! I loved that scene. 2y
Sargar114 This was such a wonderfully done reveal in that I could picture it happening. I did love that most of the family were more shocked by the incident vs the fact he was gay. The best part of this book is despite the shenanigans you can really feel the love and closeness of the group. 2y
julieclair This scene was a hoot! And the family conversation afterwards seemed pretty realistic, with the older generation shocked and struggling, the middle generation surprised but accepting/supportive, and the younger generation already aware and not thinking anything of it. It mirrors the progress we have made in society over the years, although we still have far to go. 2y
DebinHawaii It was a bit over the top but fun/funny.🤣Everyones‘ reactions seemed in character & as @julieclair said, generationally appropriate. 2y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish her poor hair!! 2y
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I loved it!!!! Laughed right out loud picturing my family in that situation 🤣🤣🤣🎉🙄 2y
slategreyskies Does anyone else find it hilarious that he was wearing nothing but a cape? I laughed so hard at that! 2y
Karisa @mcctrish 😂 Me too! It was like, but her hair… 2y
DanaManiac @slategreyskies yes absolutely! The scene was described so perfectly that I could picture it all going down! 😂 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @slategreyskies I snorted in laughter at the cape! Aimee didn't try hard enough to protect Michael, though. What a scene and mental image. 🤣🤣🤣 Would it be wrong to make a joke about Diego giving Michael a blow out? 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. 2y
mollyrotondo This scene was another classic moment in the book. I can‘t believe Fanny passed out 😂 and I agree that Aimee didn‘t do enough to steer them away lol but it‘s good for Michael that it‘s out in the open and it‘s good for his parents and grandparents to stop brushing it off and just embrace Michael wholeheartedly 2y

Aimee‘s dad Benny was stealing OR?!?!?!

Librarybelle This was a bit shocking. I think we need to know a bit more about this. 2y
kspenmoll It feels like such a betrayal- I too was shocked when the book took this turn. @Librarybelle 2y
AmyG I think this will be revealed in the last section. @Librarybelle is right….we need to know more about this. (edited) 2y
See All 18 Comments
vlwelser It seems like something else is happening. And the buyer wants to bring the price down. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I don't want to believe it's true- there's got to be more to the story. But then we read about all the expensive things Benny paid for, and it makes you wonder. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading What a shock! That chapter was so short and what a jaw dropper! 2y
mcctrish So many information bombs dropping. Every chapter has big moment, I wonder if Amos knows 2y
Sparklemn @mcctrish I suspect he did. And his nostalgia is for a time not just when Benny was alive but before he knew that Benny cheating him. I hope I‘m wrong! 2y
julieclair This was shocking and sad. I want to believe it‘s not true. On the other hand, it seems like many of the characters have secrets that are being revealed. Maybe Amos and Fanny will have secrets revealed too? 2y
Sargar114 @CoffeeNBooks @julieclair I feel the same way. This was a drop the book moment for sure (not throw @TheBookHippie 😂)…I‘m pretty sure I gasped out loud when I read it. 2y
DebinHawaii I am hoping that somehow either Amos was aware because Benny eventually told him and/or somehow Benny did some kind of investing or had hidden life insurance or something to “put the money back” that will lead to the families having enough to save the hotel somehow. I guess I am hoping that it ends up being a positive somehow but that probably isn‘t realistic. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 it made me sad definitely drop the book. 2y
julieclair @debinhawaii Your “put the money back” idea gives me hope that all will turn out okay! 2y
slategreyskies This shocked me! He doesn‘t seem the type! They were like brothers! 2y
Karisa @vlwelser @CoffeeNBooks I‘m not totally buying yet either. Brian needs better evidence and the source is super suspicious 2y
DanaManiac Ugh I hope there‘s more to this that will be a reasonable explanation. So much betrayal! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am hoping there's more to it...a safety net of sorts or that Amos was at least aware. So many things happening in the section, and only one section to go! 😯 2y
mollyrotondo Everyone is giving me hope that the information Howard gave Brian wasn‘t the whole story and there will be some reveal showing Benny put the money back into the hotel. I thought for sure Benny was the bad guy but the group is giving me hope that that story will be cleared up. Uhh Benny! 2y

OMG Aimee came from the pickle man ….

Discuss below …🤯🤯🤯🤯

vlwelser I told you all Louise probably had something extra to tell us. But pickles? Seriously? I officially love this author. 2y
vlwelser It's too early for this. I'm going to catch up with you later.... 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I got “glutenized” so figured better post in case my cramping gets worse… trying to figure out what had gluten or traces of it that I ate…but that‘s what I feel like BLECH … 🤢🥴 2y
See All 31 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser yes I love the author and the pickle story!!! 2y
Librarybelle That was hilarious! I loved that twist, and it seems so appropriate in a way for “what happens at the Golden stays at the Golden.” 2y
kspenmoll This story was unexpected & hilarious. This book is such fun! 2y
AmyG This reminded me of the movie…A Walk On the Moon. Diane Lane goes to the Catskills in the ‘60‘s and has an affair with Viggo Mortensen, the shirt guys. He comes to visit different areas to sell shirts. She has an affair with him. 2y
vlwelser @TheBookHippie I hope you feel better. I have the same problem with egg. Return to office has been an adventure. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I didn't see this twist coming at all! There is so much more to Louise's story than I would have imagined at the beginning of the book. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I didn‘t see that coming at all either. I feel so sorry for Louise, I can‘t imagine having that many miscarriages. No wonder she is the way she is with Aimee. 2y
mcctrish @AmyG I need to find this movie. I must have seen it cuz I love Diane Lane. 2y
Sparklemn The pickle guy storyline humanized Louise for me. Before that, she felt like a caricature of a well-to-do mother who tells her daughter to wear lipstick every time she leaves the house. 😀 2y
julieclair This is the last thing I would have suspected from always-so-put-together Louise! 2y
Sargar114 For me this didn‘t seem surprising (especially given all the secrets we know so far!)…she had given allusions to something to this nature. It actually seems in character to me, knowing her having a successful pregnancy one way - let‘s take control and figure out a way to make it work 2y
DebinHawaii I thought this was a good twist & addition to the secrets that just keep piling up & it definitely gave more depth to Louise. I‘m liking her much more than I did before. 2y
Deblovestoread I wasn‘t expecting this twist. Louise always presents a perfect face so you wouldn‘t know what secrets might be lurking. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser well 8 hours after severe cramps and 12 after it started I think it‘s passed. Ugh… oh man egg. I live on eggs pretty much . 2y
AmyG @mcctrish it‘s a “hot” movie. Viggo is super handsome. 🤣 2y
AmyG @TheBookHippie I hope the worst is over and you are feeling better.😘 2y
slategreyskies @Sparklemn I felt the same way about Louise. It made her seem relatable to me. Not that I did anything with a pickle man, but you know what I mean. 🤣 2y
vlwelser Glad you're feeling better. The egg thing is bad. They're everywhere. 2y
Karisa Oh my! Every character has something in this book! I love it! Pickle Man—too perfectly ridiculous (oh my, just heard the pun there as I typed it🤦🏻‍♀️! (There really should be a pickle emoji. Wasn‘t there once a pickle emoji?? 🤣 On a separate note: Hope you are feeling better, @thebookhippie 💗) 2y
DanaManiac I didn‘t see this one coming, though I also don‘t find it totally surprising. The posh buttoned up characters always have scandalous secrets 🤣 2y
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac I so agree!!!!! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am not surprised but oh how I laughed. Pickle Man jokes abound over here. But, there's a chance it could still be Benny's kid. @AmyG I haven't watched that movie in ages but it is so damn good. I think I have the DVD around here somewhere. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Karisa I had Jon Lovitz's character from A League of Their Own in my head. "Oh I'm gonna go home, shower & shave, give my wife a little pickle tickle, and then I'll be on my way". ??? 2y
Karisa @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 🤣🤣🤣 I love that movie! 2y
mollyrotondo This was the biggest secret reveal in the book so far for me. I was honestly shocked that she would sleep with another man, a vendor on property no less, in order to get pregnant. This is why communication in a relationship is so important. If only Benny and Louise talked about the possibility of it being Benny who needed some medical assistance to help them get pregnant maybe Aimee‘s biological father wouldn‘t be a mystery to Louise. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I was WONDERING if it was his ego but back then the possibility of it being the man wasn‘t even thought of. Scientifically it‘s only been the last years that most doctors will even entertain it …patriarchy 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo but yes communication !!!!!! 2y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie Patriarchy 🙄 for sure. But yes doctors would never think of it either which is also frustrating. But even so communication can go a long way. People were never open about sex and the female and male body functions. I‘m glad I wasn‘t raised to be embarrassed or ashamed about my body and feel more comfortable talking about all the flukey things that go on with it with my boyfriend and even my family. Communication!!! 😆 2y
