Celine: A novel | Peter Heller
114 posts | 81 read | 3 reading | 109 to read
From the best-selling author of The Dog Stars and The Painter, a luminous, masterful novel of suspense--the story of Celine, an elegant, aristocratic private eye who specializes in reuniting families, trying to make amends for a loss in her own past. Working out of her jewel box of an apartment at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, Celine has made a career of tracking down missing persons, and she has a better record at it than the FBI. But when a young woman, Gabriela, asks for her help, a world of mystery and sorrow opens up. Gabriela's father was a photographer who went missing on the border of Montana and Wyoming. He was assumed to have died from a grizzly mauling, but his body was never found. Now, as Celine and her partner head to Yellowstone National Park, investigating a trail gone cold, it becomes clear that they are being followed--that this is a case someone desperately wants to keep closed. Combining the exquisite plotting and gorgeous evocation of nature that have become his hallmark, with a wildly engrossing story of family, privilege, and childhood loss, Peter Heller gives us his finest work to date. From the Hardcover edition.

I had some trouble rating this book because the book itself can't quite seem to decide what it wants to be. It‘s also not exactly a novel, but somewhere in between. A novel with some thriller aspects. A slow-paced suspense with a lot of backstory. A spy story not about the spy at all. A missing person case with a long explanation as to why the detective takes on missing person cases. Something like that. The point is, I really enjoyed it. But⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I'm also not sure exactly why 😂

robinb I enjoyed it as well, but it was definitely different. And I get what you say about the genre thing. At times it felt like a cozy, at times a book more about the mysterious Celine than a thriller/mystery. Celine was the focus, all else took a backseat. 😂 2mo

Years of searching for missing persons Celine has a great track record. Now, as her health is failing, she may have the energy for one more case. She and her partner head out to Yellowstone to search for a father/photographer on a long, cold case. I love Peter Heller and his writing. So descriptive.

This is one of my book club picks and my first time reading this author. I must say the way he brought Northern California to life (I'm from there) and then brought Yellowstone to life with his words was amazing. Add the mystery and suspense and I was swept up. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for me for sure!

A good mystery that takes place around Yellowstone- which leads to good imagery. Not as good as The River or The Dog Stars but still entertaining. I also loved the lead character, she was unique and tough.

Peter Heller has reached "auto buy" status for me. Every. Book. Is just amazing. The premises are wildly different: there's the dystopian The Dog Stars, outdoor adventure novel The River, suspenseful The Painter. And now the mystery novel that is the absolutely delicious Celine. Celine is a near-70-year-old private detective, raised in the upper echelon of European/New England society. With her long time companion Pete, ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Celine is drawn into a mystery that is both fascinating and secondary to the characterization at the center of the novel. Heller's writing is as gorgeous and spare as ever. His descriptions of nature are central to the atmosphere of all of his books; his writing is evocative without feeling overdone. ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod In this book, Celine takes a case that centers on the supposed death of a parent, a famous photographer for National Geographic who allegedly died by bear attack decades ago. His daughter Gabriela, however, suspects that she had never learned the truth and that there is something beyond the easy conclusion that he was killed by a bear. As Celine delves into the mystery behind his disappearance, readers learn more about Celine herself ⬇️ 4y
UnabridgedPod a rich backstory built through her own chapters and the investigations of her son Hank.⠀

The novel is both a perfect mystery and about SO much more than a mystery. Instead, it's about love and family and faithfulness, the ways that those we love can surprise us, the secrets that we all hold at our centers. One of my goals for 2020 is to finish Peter Heller's catalog, including his nonfiction. I just can't wait.

⭐️ DECEMBER WRAP-UP ⭐️⠀⠀

Happy New Year! Looking back, I read a little more slowly in December. I attribute that to (1) the busy holidays and (2) taking on some worthwhile but challenging reads. I really relished some of these reading experiences, though, as I had the chance to revisit some old favorites and to have some lovely, deep discussions about books that challenged my perspective. ⬇️

Total Books Read - 21⠀
➡️ Fiction - 20⠀
➡️ Nonfiction - 1⠀

➡️ Audiobooks - 2⠀
➡️ Graphic Novels/Memoirs - 3⠀
➡️ Re-Reads - 2⠀
➡️ YA/Middle Grade - 7. ⬇️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 - Look Both Ways; Ask Again, Yes; Ninth House; Mornings in Jenin⠀

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - The Farm; Children of Virtue and Vengeance; The Starless Sea; White Bird; They Called Us Enemy; Get a Life, Chloe Brown; The Water Dancer⠀

Celine is different from any mystery I have ever read. I would very much like to spend time with the MC and her husband. They are amazing people who love and respect each other deeply. They go on a meandering RV trip to solve this mystery and attempt to do what Celine always does - reunite families.

I just discovered Heller this year with “The River”. When it‘s completely different, but still great. He has such a skill for writing about nature. We meet Celine, a private detective, who has a fascinating past. She‘s older and has a supportive wonderful husband, which is unique PI books. She particularly loves reuniting families in her work and this case is a doozy. A famous photographer goes missing in a national park & a bear attack is blamed.

Heller‘s prose had serious potential but the never ending storylines and rambling tangents all seem to have #nothingincommon with one another or the major plot line. Add in a disastrously constructed mystery, a female MC very poorly written by a man, and some far-fetched situations (an old lady with emphysema scaring off a drunk, rowdy biker gang 🙄), and you have yourself this failure of a novel.

Celine is a 60 something PI who was inspired to be a PI after suffering a familial loss as a teenager. She had some Lillian Boxfish vibes going on—spunky, classy, and stylish. She is investigating a situation where a man was presumed dead by a bear attack decades ago. Is he really dead or did he abandon his daughter?

The mystery is not the only focus of the novel. There is a lot of meandering. #holeinyoursoul #abbainaugust

Cinfhen Your mom HATED this book!!! I actually unstacked it because of @Mdargusch review 🤣🤣🤣 6y
Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi hated it too. They both gave it two stars. 🙈 I didn‘t even want to read it because I figured it was horrible. My low expectations actually helped in this case. It wasn‘t my favorite book and it came close to being a so-so. I actually really enjoyed all the background stories on Celine though, especially those from her childhood. @Cinfhen 6y
Cinfhen Litsy needs to change their rating system because when I see PICK im thinking 4 or 5 stars @Reviewsbylola ~ I‘m gonna keep it as unstacked 😝there are PLENTY of other books I‘d rather read 6y

emilyhaldi OMG this was a PICK for you?! I try not to “yuck your yum” but you have some real explaining to do for this one 😂 6y
Reviewsbylola Haha, it was almost a so-so. I gave it 3.5 stars. I can see why you guys disliked it but I thought the writing was well done and I loved Celeste as a character. The actual mystery aspect was a bit half baked for me. @emilyhaldi 6y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen I‘m with you! I tried making my own system with 1-2 stars being a pan, 3 stars a so-so, and 4-5 stars a pick, but then I find myself giving 3 star books picks, because I really enjoyed it, but it wasn‘t the greatest book ever. I can‘t even stick to my own rules 😝 6y
Cinfhen Soooo true @Kalalalatja we Littens need to put our brain power together and devise a new rating system!!! Because this one ain‘t working so well. I thought LT was going to implement some upgrades but I haven‘t noticed ANYTHING other than some LT logo stickers 🙄🤨 6y
Reviewsbylola Yeah I‘m like that too! @Kalalalatja a five star rating isn‘t wide enough for me, so don‘t even get me started on Litsy‘s rating system. 🤣😂 6y
Kalalalatja I actually quite liked the no-star rating system in the beginning, because stars have their own issues (seriously Goodreads, when can we have half stars!!!!), but now I‘m needing some more nuance @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola 6y
Mdargusch Meandering is putting it mildly. 👎🏼 6y
Mdargusch Keep it unstacked @Cinfhen - like you said, there are plenty of other books to read. I not only have a #holeinmysoul but I think some of my brain cells died. 6y

A nice palate cleanser after a more difficult read. I enjoyed revisiting Yellowstone and other parts West, although Heller took some liberties there. I do have to agree with other readers that sometimes the exposition made me feel like this was part of a series I had missed. But it‘s the kind of book you finish in two days and then get on with your life, so it didn‘t bother me that much.

I had mixed feelings about this book, the first I've read by this author. It is the story of a blue-blooded private investigator and her husband who specialize in reuniting separated families. They head out to Yellowstone to look into the disappearance of a young woman's father and adventure ensues. I enjoyed his evocative nature writing and the main character's backstory but felt that it was all over the place at times.

I would totally give a 🤘 for the PI portion of the story. Love their investigative process, her 'granny' toughness, as well as her 'movie star' image. I'm sure you can sense the but...there was just too much other. I totally get why the back story is included, wish that was covered as a novella or...tried reading and couldn't so listened to the audio book. It was beautifully read. If there was a 3/4 thumbs up icon that's what I would be voting.
