Exit West: A Novel | Mohsin Hamid

Rereading EXIT WEST for 2nd book group and it is just as captivating and thought-provoking as the first two times... It is also a title with many different versions of the cover art -- I like to print them all out and use as an added point of discussion!

Celine: A novel | Peter Heller

Pickpick

Another surprise favorite read for 2017. Completely different from THE DOG STARS, this literary P.I. story within a story is just as wonderfully written and has great characters. Plus, the suspense of various mssing people throughout her life is fascinating & creates interesting tension while reading.

Pickpick

A quiet, compelling story of a close-knit family, deep friendship and a small Pennsylvania community touched by tragedy. Loosely connected to his previous novel, THE SOJOURN (which is also excellent) but don't have to read in order. One of my top 10 reads of 2017 #libfaves17

I knew this would be smart & funny, but to also be so eye-opening & just simply interesting was a pleasant bonus!

Boston Girl | Anita Diamant

Pickpick

Not feeling well so picked something from my TBR pile that looked undemanding and this was perfect. Cheery and charming, 85-year-old Addie Baum, daughter of 1st generation immigrants, recounts her life. Told in staightforward style, Diamant captures the lives of women who wanted more than the traditional roles expected of them. An interesting and entertaining historical novel.

Another Brooklyn: A Novel | Jacqueline Woodson

Amazing how this book is both brutally honest and tender. Love what the author says in the afterword, how she mined her own teenage years including "the slow-motion ferocity of the end of childhood."

Had a hard time putting this one down! A story as strong and fierce and compassionate and honorable and raw and redemptive as its characters. So glad it is a #NBAwards finalist!

I was so excited last year when I realized the library's 2 long-running book discussions had never done Shirley Jackson! Today I find out what they all think of Hill House and poor Eleanor :)

As usual when I read a great book of short stories, I'm left wondering why I don't read them more often

Was recently asked what book I last read in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Thankfully I started this on a Saturday afternoon & didn't have to stop until finished. What's yours?
