The Dog Stars
The Dog Stars | Peter Heller
Leave it to Peter Heller to imagine a postapocalyptic world that contains as much loveliness as it does devastation. His hero, Hig, flies a 1956 Cessna (his dog as copilot) around what was once Colorado, chasing all the same things we chase in these pre-annihilation days: love, friendship, the solace of the natural world, and the chance to perform some small kindness. TheDog Stars is a wholly compelling and deeply engaging debut. Pam Houston, author of Contents May Have ShiftedA riveting, powerful novel about a pilot living in a world filled with lossand what he is willing to risk to rediscover, against all odds, connection, love, and grace.Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better lifesomething like his old lifeexists beyond the airport. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no returnnot enough fuel to get him homefollowing the trail of the static-broken voice on the radio. But what he encounters and what he must facein the people he meets, and in himselfis both better and worse than anything he could have hoped for.Narrated by a man who is part warrior and part dreamer, a hunter with a great shot and a heart that refuses to harden, The Dog Stars is both savagely funny and achingly sad, a breathtaking story about what it means to be human. This ebook edition includes a Reading Group Guide.

Met for BookPub last night at a local pub and had a great time. Our theme was post-apocalyptic. These are some of the books we discussed.

JulAnna I have The Book of M on my TBR. 13mo
Reggie I read World War Z almost 10 years ago and I think about that book a lot, still. 13mo
Blueberry @Reggie the audio was very well done with many different celebrity voices reading. 13mo
Blueberry @JulAnna The librarian heading our group was having a lot of trouble getting through it. Especially the middle. 13mo

This has been on #mountTBR forever, and it probably could‘ve stayed there.

Hig, his dog Jasper, and his neighbor/partner Bangley take on survival in the post-apocalypse plains. It‘s written in choppy sentences and has moments of surprising depth, or emotion.

However, I spent most of this book wondering where it could be going and progressively losing interest. But hey, I guess that the apocalypse would actually be pretty boring, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

DivaDiane That‘s a shame. I‘ve found that the books on my shelves that I have bought at one point but not yet read are overwhelmingly good reads. 4 and 5 stars all. I‘m not feeling deprived by my book buying ban! 1y

Peter Keller has the unique ability to make the apocalypse boring. Everything in the book is too convenient, and it feels like he‘s trying to hard with the excessive descriptive language. Overall rating: 2.98 stars

Seriously. Don‘t we all want to think that in a bleak and grieving post-apocalyptic world that maybe hope not only lives but keeps us alive? Maybe something‘s right with the world and it‘s already in development. 🤞

In the post-apocalyptic dystopia of The Dog Stars, 99.7% of the world‘s population has been wiped out by a flu pandemic. Hig‘s friends and family are dead and he lives in the hangar of an abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper. When an unexpected transmission lights up his radio, Hig sets out with Jasper to follow a trail he hopes will lead to a better world. 🐶✨

Narrator writes diary style about living alone after a flu epidemic wipes out almost everyone. Beginning of book was a little slow but once he finds people the story ends up being readable. Still not getting the flu shot though!😂💉. Includes a dog, airplane, Dr Pepper supply, gf, goats!

It's been a while since I've finished a book and felt so... bereft. I wish it wasn't over and don't know how the heck I'm going to settle in with anything else. It's a downright depressing post-apocalyptic world, but I could listen to Hig talk about it forever.

KarenO I enjoyed this book so much and I say I don‘t like the post-apocalyptic genre. Maybe I should rethink that... Have you read his second novel, The Painter? 8mo
Vanessa @KarenO No, but I have it on my shelves because of you! I remember you gave it really high marks and recommended it. Did you know he has another book out? 8mo
KarenO Yes. Picked up The River at Costco recently and will get to it... soon. With my f2f group of 2. He had another a couple of years ago titled Celine that I wasn‘t that wild about. It wasn‘t bad, but there‘s no reason to recommend it either. 8mo

A little over halfway through this and kind of struggling. Does it finish strong? I am tempted to DNF as the writing style hasn't really appealed to me but am also curious about what happens to Bageley.

I liked this one but didn't love it. It took me longer than I'd like to feel that hook and desire to keep picking it up.
Post apocalyptic books are usually engrossing, and this had its moments, but the sadness brought me down.
The first half of the book felt methodically well developed, but the conclusion was a bit too buttoned up for me.
Just eh. My husband loved it, and I agree that it is unique and often starkly beautiful. Just not my thing.
