Walk Two Moons
Walk Two Moons | Sharon Creech
In her own singularly beautiful style, Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech intricately weaves together two tales, one funny, one bittersweet, to create a heartwarming, compelling, and utterly moving story of love, loss, and the complexity of human emotion.Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood," travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic," and whose mother disappeared. As Sal entertains her grandparents with Phoebe's outrageous story, her own story begins to unfold--the story of a thirteen-year-old girl whose only wish is to be reunited with her missing mother.Supports the Common Core State Standards

“Don‘t judge a Man until you‘ve walked two moons in his moccasins” this RF by Sharon Creech has won a Newbery Medal. This book had many great life lessons and relatable content. Sal is on a road trip with Gram and Gramps, and she tells them a story about her friend Phoebe. This story talks about how Phoebe‘s mom left the family and it results In the story of what happened to Sals mom when she left the family. #UCFLAE3414SU19

Macker11 In a classroom I would have the students choose this book for a LC. The students can read at home and then discuss during class time ESOL#38. During this time they can check for understanding and discuss details of the text. They can highlight patterns, critical features and big ideas UDL 3.2. https://www.scholastic.com/content/dam/teachers/lesson-plans/migrated-files-in-b... questions for LC groups. 1mo
DrSpalding This is obviously an excellent book selection! Scholastic is a high-quality resource and yes… This would work well for a literature circle choice. (edited) 1mo

On a cross country road trip with her grandparents, Sal must face the truth of the mother who left her to “go out west”. She begins to accept the part of her that is just a 13-year old girl whose only wish is to be reunited with her missing mother

This may not be the cover you remember, but let me just tell you... the beautiful writing and memorable characters in Walk Two Moons will bring you right back to your childhood, when it was the cool book in the library that all the bookworm kids wanted to get their hands on (in my school, at least!). In Episode 52 of my podcast, we discuss this Newbery Medal winner and the ways in which it tackles big issues! Link to listen in bio! 🎧

Oh, no—I read the wrong book! When I came across/bailed on another of Creech's books last week, I thought I remembered *loving* one of her books that I had read with one of my boys. I searched our book logs, and thought it was Walk Two Moons. Nope. It was Hope Was Here, by Joan Bauer. Back to WTM: I *did* read this with Number One Son many moons ago. I can only assume that I was just as bored with it then, and that I quickly put it out of my mind.

Newbery award winner "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech is an F book that would be perfect for an LC. The story revolves around Salamanca and her family as they take a road trip across the country. As Salamanca tells her family a story to pass the time in the car, truths about her own life start to unravel as well. Sharon Creech was my favorite author growing up and this was one of her best books, in my opionion. #LAE3414sp19

alexandracarpenter Harper Collins, the publisher, provides activities to be done in the classroom here https://www.harpercollins.com/9780060233341/walk-two-moons/ 6mo
alexandracarpenter The UDL I would choose for this book is 7.2 - "optimize relevance, value, and authenticity". The main characters are Native American and I feel that having this representation and talking about the characters' culture would be helpful for students who are of a similar background to see themselves in a story. 6mo
alexandracarpenter An ESOL strategy for this book could be "use student pairs for team learning...". Pairing students of varying skill levels together to read passages of the book could be helpful in aiding comprehension of student who have less knowledge of the English vocabulary. 6mo

I knew how this book was going to end within the first few pages, but I still bawled like a baby when I finished it. All of the characters in this book are fascinating and the ways they interact with each are so real, you can't help but want to learn more about them. If I ever teach middle grade English, I'll definitely incorporate this book into my lesson plans.

Johanna414 I read this as a middle school student, and I loved it sooooo much! Love Sharon Creech! 6mo

Salamanca Tree Hiddle, a 13 year old with Native American roots, travels cross country with her grandparents. An important part of the journey is in southwest Minnesota, where American Indian tribe members quarry the soft red stone (catlinite) from which peace pipes, jewelry etc are made. This where I grew up. #settingyouvebeento #riotgrams @bookriot

Walk Two Moons was my absolute favorite book growing up (and in a lot of ways, even now that I‘m older). It really gifted me my love for storytelling and eccentric characters. This book is funny, complex, heart melting, and it has truths that will stick with you long after you‘ve finished it. I would highly recommend! Huzza, huzza.

Jeannie I‘m just starting this. It‘s so nice to hear which books other people loved as children. My two favorites were Island of the Blue Dolphins and Z For Zachariah. 10mo

Good morning! Thanks for hosting a giveaway that celebrates two of my favorite things- books and #coffeecoffeecoffee 📚☕️ Here are 4 of my favorite books and this morning‘s mug of coffee. Cheers!

4thhouseontheleft I used to live so close to Old City Coffee, I had an apt at 3rd and Vine! My fave cafe in that area is Cafe Ole. 1y
JazzFeathers I read Walk Two Moons on a holiday to lreland. What a pleasant remembrance. I got obsessed with the author and read two more books like her. It's been some time... 1y
StephanieGeiser @4thhouseontheleft That‘s awesome! I got this one on a trip to Philly a few years ago. I love that city! I was thisclose to moving there about 5 years ago and things just didn‘t work out. Probably for the best but Philadelphia still holds a special place in my heart. 1y
StephanieGeiser @JazzFeathers Oh that‘s good to know! I haven‘t read any of her other books! Granted, it‘s been a while since I‘ve re-read this one too and I‘m worried it won‘t stand up to my memories of it. I‘m always happy to hear other people have loved the books I‘ve loved! 1y

Walk Two Moons is a fantastic RF book and winner of the Newberry award, written by Sharon Creech. It talks about a girl going on a journey with her grandparents and along the way she tells them a story of all the people she has met and crazy events that have happened in her life. It would be a fantastic book for LC in a classroom.

This is one of my all things me favorite books, ever. Even though it is probably considered a middle grade book, I fell in love with it during college when I was a very lit snobby English major, which speaks volumes about the quality of writing and powerful story telling. It has traveled the world with me as well.

Beautiful story about moms who are gone. It's a tough topic handled in a gentle but honest way. Salamanca's mom left for reasons she doesn't understand, and then dad moves her off the farm to Ohio. She will make some eccentric friends there, go on a road trip with her grandparents and reach understanding. http://cannonballread.com/2016/08/when-mom-is-gone/
