Realistic Fiction Newbery Award winner Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech is a great IR or LC. This book is about a little girls who's mom left and she is trying to reunite with her. On a long journey with her grandparents to see her mother again lots happens and many stories are told. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM This book is another great one for predicting. UDL 6.1 guide appropriate goal setting is great for LC to monitor their reading. ESOL 6 continually monitor students' comprehension is also a good one to make sure they understand what they are reading.

Wishtree (adult edition) | Katherine Applegate

Pickpick

Wishtree by Katherine Applegate is a great MF to be used as a RA or IR. It is about a tree named Red who can talk. He has been alive for 216 rings and seen a lot. When the word LEAVE was carved into his truck it brought on a lot of conflict in the community. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM I would use this book as a read aloud. It is a great opportunity to have story time. Perfect bool to talk about predicting in a story. UDL for this book is 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationship. ESOL for this book is 2 promote cooperation (small group) and 22 give enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions.

Blueberries for Sal | Robert McCloskey

Pickpick

Caldecott Honor Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey, is a great read aloud or partner reader. This book is about a little girl named Sal who goes picking blueberries with her mother. She ends up eating more than collecting and loosing her mother and following behind a mama bear. When the bear realizes that it is not her cub following her she is startled. This is a great book to teach about storing food for winter. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM ESOL and UDL that I have attached to this book are; 21 Record your lectures, presentations, or stories on audiotape, especially for new students who have very limited exposure to English, and 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information.

Light in the Attic | Shel Silverstein

Pickpick

“Whatif“ poem, by Shel Silverstein in his great book Light in the Attic, is a great CR for all ages. This poem is about all the things that children think about when they go to bed at night. This would be a great poem to discuss some of these issues children have and reassure them that it's okay to come and talk to an adult about these worries. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM UDL and ESOL that I would use with this poem would be, ESOL 14 simplify you speech by making it slower and redundant, and UDL 5.1 use multiple media for communication.

MF Caldecott honor Click, Clack Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin illustrated by Betsy Lewin is about cows who find a typewriter and demand blankets in the barn. This is a great RT or S. Children will have a great time reading and performing this book for their class. Honeysmoke by Monique Fields is a great book to teach kids about diversity and self identity. Simone is a biracial young girl who is trying to figure out her identity. She knows that she is not black like her mom, not white like her dad. She thinks long and hard about who she is and what her parents remind her of. At the end of the story she comes up with her very own unique identity and word for herself. Total must have. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM UDL I would use for this story is 8.4 increase mastery-orientated feedback and 3.3 guide information processing and visualization. ESOL 15 reinforce the key ideas that you present again and again.
Teaching students about diversity and multicultural families is very important in today's school. Here is a great website to help with that.

Historical Fiction Newbery Award winner Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan is a great SR. It's about a lady who comes to live with a family after answering an ad about someone looking for a wife. She soon realized that where she was is nothing like Maine where she was from but made it work because she loved the family. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM I chose UDL 3.2 highlight patterns. critical features. big ideas. and relationships, and ESOL 45 use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities. I chose these because all through the story Sarah is comparing Maine to the prairie lands.

Tikki Tikki Tembo | Arlene Mosel, Blair Lent
post image
Mehso-so

Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Model illustrated by Blair Lent is a TL Boston Globe Horn Book Award winner. This is a great RA picture book for early elementary students. This story is about 2 brothers who are playing near a well and they both feel in. Since Tikki's name was so long to say it took longer to get him out after he fell in. This then made it where the names of children had to be shorter. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM This repetitive folktale would be great for ESOL 14 simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant, and for UDL 2.5 illustrate through multiple mead.

RF Newbery Award winner One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is a great IR for grades 3-6. This story is about a silverback gorilla who has spent almost all of his live in a “domain“ at the Exit 8 mall with his friends Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. This NF novel about Sonia Sotomayor is about her life growing up and the struggles that she faced being Hispanic. Where the Sidewalk Ends, by Shel Silverstein is an amazing book full of great poems. The poem that I like the best is "Sick". This poem is about a little girl named Peggy who comes up with every excuse for being sick just so she doesn't have to go to school, until she finds out it is Saturday and she needs to go play. This poem would be a great starter for choral reading. #UCFLAE3414F19

AleciaM This book would be great for beginner ESOL and simple enough for your lower level ESE children. The ESOL I chose is #21 record your lectures, presentations, and stories on audiotape, especially for new students who have very limited exposure to English. AleciaM I choose strategies because some ESOL students may not understand the lingo that is used thought the book. For UDL some students need to actually hear the audio book as they follow along. This would be part of their assistive technology. 2mo
