Murder Book: A Graphic Memoir of a True Crime Obsession
Murder Book: A Graphic Memoir of a True Crime Obsession | Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell
A humorous graphic investigation of the author's obsession with true crime, the murders that have most captivated her throughout her life, and a love letter to her fellow true-crime fanatics. Why is it so much fun to read about death and dismemberment? In Murder Book, lifelong true-crime obsessive and New Yorker cartoonist Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell tries to puzzle out the answer. An unconventional graphic exploration of a lifetime of Ann Rule super-fandom, amateur armchair sleuthing, and a deep dive into the high-profile murders that have fascinated the author for decades, this is a funny, thoughtful, and highly personal blend of memoir, cultural criticism, and true crime with a focus on the often-overlooked victims of notorious killers.

I wanted to love this GN because I inhale True Crime like any other woman. This was, unfortunately, a bit disjointed. I loved when she discussed the crimes that intrigued her and why, but then she‘d ramble on about something completely off topic. Pages of her laughing at her own jokes… when you‘re not laughing, is kind of exhausting.

It could have been better. It had good points. But it had a lot more flops.

It‘s cute! If you get wrapped up in murders and serial killers, and like Law and Order, etc, you may enjoy this. The author is a bit younger than me. I also grew up in the Bay Area, so topics like the Zodiac and Jeffrey Dahmer were everywhere. 🔪🪓🗡

I may not consider myself a full blown "Murderino", but as someone who grew up on Law and Order, and still triple checks my locks after reading I'll Be Gone in the Dark, I enjoyed this one!

Hilary explores her (and her family's) obsession with true crime, and also looks at America's use of crime media as entertainment in this graphic memoir. Interesting, funny, and informative!

ElizaMarie I really liked this one. When my mom came to visit, she had made a comment about how I like all those “scary true stuff,“ and then we would watch 20/20 or Dateline together, and I am like... “mom, this is the same thing!“ and then we took a deep dive into all that and realized she was a “murderino“ but didn't realize it. 1y
Chelsea.Poole You‘re doing much much better than me 😅🫣 I promise to start one from your list ASAP 1y
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole to be fair, I definitely started with the quickest reads! (And I am reading about 5 books at the same time right now, I can't stop starting new ones 😂 ) 1y

I‘m a little torn about this. The art was fine, but I found the varying font sizes and many of the panels difficult to read, which diminished my enjoyment of the story. However, by the time Campbell started discussing both true crime and crime dramas on TV, I was fully invested and entertained. There‘s humor here, yes, but also respect for victims, detailed genre history, and well-reasoned thoughts on why so many women share this obsession.

BarbaraBB And that makes two already! 1y

Ha. She speaks so true to my heart. We all fall into True Crime for different reasons, but it does help us feel empowered. We feel for the victims, we question how people can be so horrible to each other; it just goes so much deeper than chisme.

This is a fun & totally engaging read - in fact, it's probably the only feelgood book about murder I'm ever likely to read! The author explains how she first got hooked on murder & explores why she loves it so much. It's warm & witty & her insights are touching & real. The sections on Zodiac & Ted Bundy are great. She also details how true crime as a genre has developed from books to TV docs/series to podcasts. So informative as well as fun!

Went into Waterstones with the sole intention of having a bite to eat in the cafe and somebody had left this book on a display near my table. Obviously I had to have a quick glance through. Inevitably I had to buy it! Absolutely incorrigible.

What a delightful book about murder. Campbell writes of her long obsession with true crime and examines why she, and so many of us, can‘t seem to get enough. That was all great, but I really love the way she writes about sharing this obsession with her mother. Their relationship fondly reminded me of the countless hours my own mother and I spent watching Law and Order and coming up with theories about JonBenet Ramsey.

mklong P.S. Just so I‘m not making my mother sound like a morbid weirdo, she also gave me a love of art, birds, flowers, dogs, and reading. Oh and show tunes…man, she was great. 2y

Leftcoastzen My best friend & her mom enjoyed listening to the police scanner late night!😀But they also bonded over books , cooking, & dogs. 2y

It‘s like I wrote this book…if I were the least bit talented like Hilary. I love love loved her personality which came shining through this graphic novel about her obsession with true crime, which she imagines was passed down from her mom, and to her from Hilary‘s grandmother (like my family!). There are excellent true crime recs: from documentaries to books and podcasts. Also, a look at what it is about true crime that attracts women. Loved it!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ New Yorker cartoonist, Fitzgerald Campbell, scrutinizes what draws her specifically, and us generally, to true crime. Is it a learned/inherited hobby (from her mom) that grew as media and pop culture shifted? Is it victim relatability? Through this research, she discusses specific cases and media influence. It‘s absolutely fascinating, darkly humorous, and an absolute gateway for true crime noobs like myself.

I can imagine this dividing opinions based on how people feel about true crime, but as someone who‘s had a lot of conversations about whether I‘m incurable bizarre for listening to My Favourite Murder I really appreciated it. I liked this humorous deep dive into the psychology behind being obsessed with true crime.

I, like many women, am a true crime junkie. This graphic novel explained why women are so drawn to this genre. This was an educational book about the history of true crime in media and a look into why people are so fascinated by it. Did I mention that it‘s also funny which a twisted thing to say about a “murder book”. My bad. The artwork was fantastic plus it gave me lots of suggestions for true crime books to include in my to be read list.

Emilymdxn Stacked so fast! It‘s a long time to wait for a preorder when I want to read it so badly :( 3y
