And this is where Fjällbacka and Tanumshede are on the map.

The grey/blue line is the border to Norway.

I actually felt a little bad, when Erica talked about summer tourists buying up the houses and turning them into summer cabins when I saw how close to the border the city was. The book was first published in 2003, and I know that in this period a lot of Norwegians was buying up houses along this coast down to Lysekil.

Erica Falck returns home to Fjallbacka Sweden. Her friend Alex has committed suicide. She teams up with Patrik Hedstrom, police, to find the truth. Old family secrets surface and someone committed murder to protect them. Nice debut. Book was slow in the beginning. Ending was a surprise. Interesting characters. Plot twists. Looking forward to book 2. Recommend to those who love mystery thrillers. #Murder2020 4/4

Andrew65 Another great review and if not read it, would have read it on the back of this. Already read book 2 so will be interested to see what you make of that. 3d
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m looking forward to book 2. 3d
gradcat @EadieB I quite liked this one, too, Eadie. I think it was my favorite of the series so far (I‘ve read 6). But I do remember liking the next one very much also. @Andrew65 Oh, and guys? Sorry if I‘m repeating myself on #NordicNoir posts...It‘s hard to remember everything since I‘m not reading right along with you. Pardon me if I get boring!!! 😂 3d

EadieB In The Ice Princess, Fjallbacka seems like a peaceful, beautiful small town which is remote, quiet and calm – but like the water, there are currents underneath the smooth surface. The book had three psychopaths. Lucas, bully and wife beater, Nils and Jan were two psychopaths in one family. Can't always tell a town by it's cover! Looking forward to the next book! (edited) 5d
AnneCecilie I thought the beginning was slow and it wasn‘t until 50 - 60 p in that I got invested in the story. Fjällbacka seems like a nice place to live, and it‘s hard to believe that anything bad can happen there. I‘m looking forward to the next book. 5d
Butterfinger Here is where I want to vent. How dare these people put fear of gossip over their 10 year old children. It makes me furious. These children had to take care of the problem themselves because Jan, like @EadieB says, a psychopath. The family didn't even offer counseling. She was 10 and going through pregnancy 😡😠. I wanted to slap those selfish parents. 5d

AnneCecilie @Crazeedi The place do exist and is north of Gutenberg 2d
Crazeedi @AnneCecilie I wondered if it was a real place! 2d
AnneCecilie @Crazeedi I had to look it up 😉 And it looks absolutely beautiful and idyllic 2d
Tove_Reads @Crazeedi Läckberg was born and raised there. Ingrid Bergman had a cottage around there as well. 130 km from Gothenburg. 2d
Crazeedi @Tove_Reads that's very interesting!!! It sounds so unique 2d
AnneCecilie @Tove_Reads It makes sense that Fjällbacka is Läckberg‘s hometown, there was just something in her description of the place and distances between places. 2d
Butterfinger @AnneCecilie @Tove_Reads @Crazeedi @EadieB I wonder if people in her community thought, "Is she talking about me?" Especially the gossiping women. 2d
Crazeedi @Butterfinger that's true! 2d
Tove_Reads @Butterfinger @Crazeedi @AnneCecilie @EadieB Ninni Schulman‘s books are also set in the small town in Sweden where she grew up. She was nervous about their reactions. She says that the most common thing people asks her is if in her next book she could kill someone on their street... 2d

EadieB I think they are an interesting couple and I think the relationship will be good for Erica. 5d
AnneCecilie I like them as a couple. They knew each other for years before Erica moved to Stockholm, maybe that‘s way everything so smooth? 5d
Butterfinger I adore them. I love that Patric has been pining for her. I loved the moment he told her how long it has been. I loved how both of them had insecurities. 5d
Tove_Reads He seems to actually be a real good guy, quite the rare type. I started thinking that it‘s actually not that common to have a couple as the main character solving crime. 5d

EadieB I think Anna will wise up and leave Lucas as he is too controlling. 5d
AnneCecilie I‘m not sure. Women who are beaten and abused, tend to take some time leaving their partner. This seems to be the first time Anna has left, and they tend to go back. I hope Lucas hurting their oldest kid and breaking her arm, was what was needed for Anna to leave him for good. I kept expecting him to show up in Fjällbacka, he seemed like a guy that would to that. 5d
Butterfinger Can't answer. I know. But I will say I was proud that Anna went back to Erica. She definitely couldn't deal with it herself. 5d

eanderson I hope that Anna will leave but stats speak and I think she‘ll go back and forth until she is finally pushed to completely leave him. 5d
Tove_Reads I was also expecting that he would turn up. I think he will in the next book. And I think he‘ll do anything to get the kids to get back at her. Also the reason she might go back to him. 5d

EadieB Erica Falck because she seemed like a good friend to Alex. 5d

Butterfinger Erica because she is a writer who is hiding a lot of pain from her relationship with her mom. I want to see that explored. 5d

eanderson Definitely Erica... she seems like a real female, weight struggles, wishing she didn‘t say something she shouldn‘t have, not wanting to be pushed around. I like her! 5d
Tove_Reads I found many intriguing people in the book. I like it when some characters that you wouldn‘t think would be part of the plot later on are actually vital to the plot. 5d

Butterfinger This was my second time reading it and I had forgotten who it was. I remembered it was a woman, but was it the rich one or the servant. I do remember being surprised that it was a woman because the way the beginning of each chapter was written, I thought it was the artist. 5d

One of the better #NordicNoir that I‘ve read... I haven‘t read many because I feel like they can be really drawn out. The chapters were ridiculously long and I know I saw someone else say something about it. Good read!

EadieB @eanderson I liked this one too! 6d
Crazeedi It was definitely worth reading 6d
gradcat @eanderson I think you‘re absolutely right about Scandinavian mystery/suspense authors...in that vein, the books in one of earlier mystery series, by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö—the Martin Beck series—have very long, drawn-out sequences. But I‘m glad you liked this one. I thought it was good, too. ♥️ (edited) 6d

EadieB @gradcat I agree! Oh by the way, I got your card yesterday. Thanks so much for your kind words. And my husband thinks I am such an introvert because I read all the time and don't have any friends. Little does he know that I have the best friends and they all like to read like me. lol 5d

Another great start to a series! Lovely little town, great characters I want to get to know better and intriguing small town secrets. A woman is found dead, suicide it seems, but turns out it‘s murder. Why was she killed? Who did it? The past had become the present and nothing is like it seems. 🌠🌠🌠🌠#NordicNoir #Murder2020 5/5

Tove_Reads The one thing I didn‘t like were the lack of proper chapters. I like chapters and especially in this genre they should be of a proper length, not 80 pages. 2w

I‘m relatively lukewarm about this mystery. The writing was ok, however it was translated so maybe that‘s where my issue with the book lies. I wasn‘t moved in any way by the plot line. I‘ll the second book a chance and hope that it improves.

The first book in the Patrik Hedstrom Series covers the #WinterKills tag very nicely! I really enjoyed the first book in this series and need to get back to them, only having read the first two.

TrishB I‘ve read a couple of hers - but don‘t think it was this series. 14mo

Took a week to get through mostly because it was too hot to read at night. Okay but not wow I want to read the next one right now. I'll eventually read the next one. The mystery is in the end too easily put together by the detective, lots of deus ex machina things to get him there. I would have liked the plot to continue to focus on Erica's looking for clues instead of Patrick and the whole romance thing just left me meh. #julyinfrench

Too hot, too humid. It's sticky, I have a persistent headache due to the humidity. Not ideal reading conditions. I'm half done with the Läckberg, it's good, slow but good. July is a big weeding month at the library hence I now have passable copies of two Nothomb and a Cuban/Miami mystery in my TRP. Is it October yet? I miss hockey. #julyinfrench

The narration was so-so. But the story was good. I liked that this was as much Erica‘s story as Patrik‘s. I‘ll continue with this series, but maybe in print instead.

This was decent entertainment, but I thought it was pretty slow storytelling. Maybe I feel this way, because I expected something else out of a Nordic Noir novel. I assume that this first book in the series was supposed to set the scene for the next ones and maybe that‘s why the story just felt unfocused a lot.

I finished the audio book while I got my steps in! 🤪

I found this to be an OK, not good, audiobook. As others have pointed out, the narrator pronounced all proper nouns with what sounds to my ears like good Swedish pronunciation, but all the characters are given British accents. And he really can‘t do women. But even if I‘d read it in print I don‘t think it would rise above so-so for me. The mystery was sustained not by red herrings or plot twists, but by withholding information from the reader.👇🏻

Lcsmcat There were characters who should have been important (he found the body!) who disappeared from the first chapter until the last. And there were inconsistencies that bothered me that I can‘t quite name - was it a translation issue? Or an author issue? In the end, I won‘t read the next one in the series. 2y
Susanita We read the third in the series for mystery book club, and the consensus was that it was not that great. I thought the actual mystery was fine, but there were way too many threads that added nothing to the story. 2y

I‘m listening to this on my commute and one thing really bothers me. They keep saying the victim was 10 and in 8th grade or sometimes “middle school” when the big event happened to her. (Trying to avoid outright spoilers.) But everything I can find about Swedish schools would put a 10 year old in grade 4. Any Littens out there with knowledge of the Swedish school system in the 1970‘s and 80‘s?

I really enjoyed Erica‘s storyline and was always excited to get to her chapters. The side drama that she has with her sister and her sister‘s marital strife was fantastic addition to the text but was slightly disappointed to not have a solution in this book but hoping it will be addressed in the next book in the series. This was my first book I have read from this author and was pleasantly surprised that it held up to the hype!

Not the worst book ever but it had it‘s issues. I found the plot was easy to figure out and some of the characters just horrible. I did enjoy the setting and how the small town atmosphere added to the mystery. Everybody knew of each other but knew nothing about what happened behind closed doors. My full 3 star review is on Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2260316030
