Furia
Furia | Yamile Saied Méndez
A powerful, #ownvoices contemporary YA for fans of The Poet X and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter set in Argentina, about a rising soccer star who must put everything on the line—even her blooming love story—to follow her dreams. In Rosario, Argentina, Camila Hassan lives a double life. At home, she is a careful daughter, living within her mother’s narrow expectations, in her rising-soccer-star brother’s shadow, and under the abusive rule of her short-tempered father. On the field, she is La Furia, a powerhouse of skill and talent. When her team qualifies for the South American tournament, Camila gets the chance to see just how far those talents can take her. In her wildest dreams, she’d get an athletic scholarship to a North American university. But the path ahead isn’t easy. Her parents don’t know about her passion. They wouldn’t allow a girl to play fútbol—and she needs their permission to go any farther. And the boy she once loved is back in town. Since he left, Diego has become an international star, playing in Italy for the renowned team Juventus. Camila doesn’t have time to be distracted by her feelings for him. Things aren’t the same as when he left: she has her own passions and ambitions now, and La Furia cannot be denied. As her life becomes more complicated, Camila is forced to face her secrets and make her way in a world with no place for the dreams and ambition of a girl like her. Filled with authentic details and the textures of day-to-day life in Argentina, heart-soaring romance, and breathless action on the pitch, Furia is the story of a girl’s journey to make her life her own.

This is a coming-of-age story of a teenage girl in #Argentina. All she wants is to play futbol, but she's up against a society that doesn't believe girls should be individuals. Everyone from her family to her boyfriend wants to control her. I enjoyed it. #ReadingTheAmericas2023 #Booked2023 #ProperNounInTitle #MarvellousMarch #MarchMadness @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB @alisiakae @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Andrew65 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES

I loved this book and maybe it‘s because I played soccer for 18 years…but it brought me joy to hear about another woman‘s journey to achieving her goals. The plot is very engaging, the characters (for the most part) are lovable, and it addresses very serious issues of violence against women. There were only a few issues I noted with some inconsistencies with the plot but it was overshadowed with the other facets of the novel!

For the #readingtheamericas2023 I selected this title to represent 🇦🇷 Argentina. This was such a very good book a real coming of age with the background focusing on futball or soccer if you prefer. Although written for the YA genre it's truly a story that will appeal to all ages. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks #bookspinbingo

Bookwormjillk I loved this one. Great pick. 1y
Librarybelle This looks good! 1y
BarbaraBB I might choose this one too for Argentina. Nice cover too! 1y

I picked this up to finish one of my 2022 reading challenges. Sports stories aren't necessarily my jam otherwise. Yamile does an excellent job representing Camila's sports aspirations and how those clash with mysogeny in the culture around her, as well as her developing romance. Content warnings for mysogeny, abusive father, and murdered or missing girls. #Futbol #Sports

Brava to author Yamile Mendez for stirring my fearless inner child who once yearned to play women‘s professional sports—back when they still weren‘t taken seriously. I‘m so glad that times are finally changing for today‘s young female athletes—and that authors like Yamile are empowering passionate young girls who really love sports! 🙌ðŸ»âš½ï¸ðŸ™ŒðŸ»

I don‘t normally read books with a huge focus on sports, so this is out of my comfort zone a bit! It‘s well-written, though I didn‘t always understand Camila, the MC âï¸âï¸âï¸

I always list sports as the genre I least like, yet I chose to read this book for my #foodandlit #Argentina and it was glorious! I loved this story about a young woman who would not give up her dream. This author is incredible! I felt like I was in the story and fully invested in all of it.

Picked this one up for Argentina for #foodandlit @Texreader @Butterfinger @Catsandbooks and wound up finishing it in one day! Good story about a girl who saves herself and refuses to be saved by her prince. It really shows the reader the good, the bad, and the ugly of Argentina culture and mentions ton of food and drinks for me to try.

I can't decide. Memoir vs. #OwnVoices I also have Borges, but I am not sure if it is Ficciones translated or not. How I love this challenge!! #FoodandLit @Catsandbooks @Texreader

Chrissyreadit Thank you! It sounds like a book I‘d love! I‘m going to see if library has it. 2y
Allylu I read Furia last year for my Argentina book - my daughter challenged me to read at least one book from every Spanish-speaking country. I thought it was good. I gave it 4 stars. You can read my short review if you search for it here on Litsy. 2y

IndoorDame I‘m always partial to #ownvoices when I have the choice 2y
Butterfinger @IndoorDame normally, I do too, but the other one is written by one of the survivors of the 1972 plane crash. I'm going to have to check them both out of the library. 2y
IndoorDame @Butterfinger oh, that does sound really interesting. I‘ll look forward to your review if you end up reading that one 2y
Catsandbooks Looks like you have some good ones! 2y
brittanyreads I, too, am considering Furia but may go with Lobizona. I'm very on the fence 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I get sucked into the movie Alive any time it's on so Out of the Silence gets my vote. It's on my TBR but not for Argentina. 2y

November wrap up!

Despite a hectic work month, I managed to finish 16 books. A good number are audiobooks I listened to while training for my half marathon (which I run on Dec 4th 😬).

Favorite read of the month goes to The Crown of Gilded Bones. I plan to keep rereading my favorite parts (which is 90% of the book) until my loan is up.

EvieBee Wow! Impressive! 2y

This is my Argentina pick for #ReadingThSpanish-speakingCountries, a challenge my elder daughter bade me try with her. Furia is her soccer name because she is fast and unstoppable. It tells about her quest to go to the United States via soccer and lift herself out of poverty; her family life; and her boyfriend - a professional soccer player from her village who plays in Italy. There was drama, romance, family stuff and hope. It was good. #116

Of the many plot lines interwoven in this story, I found evolving relationship with her mother to be the most compelling. I was least moved by the romance, but not going to lie, I also enjoyed the steamy scenes. Some dark moments, but they are outshone by the female characters each finding their power in different ways. Makes me want to rewatch Bend It Like Beckham â¤ï¸

I know this is contrary to popular opinion, but I did not enjoy reading this book. When I was reading the back of this book, I thought it was going to be about Camile‘s struggle to find a way to play fútbol without her mother finding out, but is was so much more about the boy who was back in town and did she still like him? Major let-down. (Photo featuring Fitz #CatsOfLitsy)

This is a character driven novel, and it was excellent, just not my thing. I‘m an action reader and this moved much to slow for me. However, I can think of the perfect hands to place this book into when they come into the library. It totally deserves every award it receives. But for me personally, it was okay.

“One day, when a girl was born in Rosario, the earth would shake with anticipation for her future and not dread.â€

Camila Hassan has one dream and that‘s to play soccer but in Argentina that isn‘t possible for her since she is a girl. This book was so much more than about soccer and it blew me away. I loved the Camila as a character and could relate so much to her. Always having to bite your tongue with all the machismo and for daring to dream.

Reese is hitting her YA book club picks out of the park. This book was about Camila who leads a double life. At house she is the careful daughter who is trying to live up to her mothers expectations. But on the soccer field she is Furia who is a powerhouse of skill and talent. She knows her family won‘t approve of her playing football but she loves it and doesn‘t want to give up on her dreams. This books also deals with a lot of important topics.

Camila is the strong female heroine and role model every teen needs in YA literature. She's driven, passionate, intelligent, and loyal. And continues to show her strength as La Furia despite navigating sexism, racism, and abuse. I highly recommend this #ownvoices novel to all, not just soccer/fútbol fans.

Reese Witherspoon's 2nd YA Hello Sunshine Title is another winner. I'm not a big sports person, let alone football/soccer so learning about the gender inequalities for players in other countries really opened my eyes. So many great discussions could be spurred from this title and it would make a great bool club.
