I downloaded this book in case I get a chance to read it as well. I‘ve already covered all these countries for #readingafrica2022 except #Senegal, but I think this will give me a better idea of some of them than what I read, especially #GuineaBissau. In case anyone is needing these hard-to-find countries in books for the challenge, this ebook is free with Kindle Unlimited. #Mauritania #Gambia #Guinea

BarbaraBB Thanks, I‘m sure I can use it! 2y

Longform journalism is where it‘s at, and I loved this collection of Keefe‘s articles from the New Yorker!

I had a great side email with @BarbaraBB after reading his piece on Dutch organized crime. He covered controversial figures like Mark Burnett, the creator of The Apprentice, and his support of 45. There was a heartbreaking piece about a lawyer trying to protect clients from the death penalty. And it ends with his profile of Bourdain. ⬇️

Megabooks There is a piece on the democratically elected President of #Gambia, who has since been deposed in a coup, and mining rights to the country. #ReadingAfrica2022 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 2y
squirrelbrain Definitely want to get to this one soon! 2y

Megabooks @squirrelbrain @JenReadsAlot I hope you both get to it! It‘s fantastic! 2y
Librarybelle Awesome! 2y
batsy This sounds great. Scratch a little deeper and almost all enterprises around us seem to involve a level of skulduggery 😵 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures Reading this now. I love how it is true crime short stories and they are all so different and interesting. 2y
Chelsea.Poole I have this one checked out. Your review makes me excited to get started. 👏 2y
BarbaraBB I think I need it too! 2y
Megabooks @Librarybelle 👍🏻👍🏻 2y
Megabooks @batsy true, and a lot of this was him scratching deeper into people who have amoral dealings. It was great being introduced to situations and people I knew nothing about! 2y
Megabooks @ChaoticMissAdventures 💯💯 I learned so much and was engaged the whole time! 2y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole I hope you got the audiobook because he does a fantastic job!! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I know you don‘t read a lot of NF, but I think you‘ll appreciate/enjoy this. Quite a few of the essays have an international focus, whether it‘s the kidnapping of Heineken or El Chapo‘s escape and capture or a Syrian arms dealer, and the articles about the US are about things that don‘t get any or adequate treatment by CNN, for example. 👍🏻👍🏻 2y
Megabooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think you should get this out too. And I finished one today that I‘ll tag you in the review of that I think you‘ll enjoy too. 2y
BarbaraBB That sounds real interesting! 2y
vivastory Great review, Meg!! I can't wait to read this one. Thanks for tagging me. 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘m really looking forward to this one! 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks this one looks very interesting, and I definitely need to start reading more. I‘ll check out your other review too. 2y
Cinfhen This one sounds great!!! I‘m thinking of going print!! 2y
Amiable I loved the two nonfiction books I read by him, so I‘ll definitely be picking this one up too. 2y
britt_brooke I‘m reading this now! He‘s going to be at the Southern Festival of Books in October and I‘m super hopeful soccer isn‘t pulling us in all directions that weekend (because H‘s team will travel now, too 😅), so I can see him. 🤞🏼 2y

Finding Me: A Memoir | Viola Davis

Pickpick

Ms. Davis does not hold back - she shares her darkest moments, memories and family history with rawness, honesty and earnestness. She‘s a straight shooter, humble and inspiring. Listening to her read her story is extra gratifying. Bonus she spent some time in #Gambia ☺️so #ReadingAfrica22

Librarybelle I didn‘t realize Oprah selected this for her book club! Nice! 2y
BarbaraBB Good one, I was still looking for a Gambia read. 2y
Megabooks I need to go back and read this. When I originally got it from the library I had read too many celebrity memoirs in a row. 2y

Cinfhen I didn‘t remember you listening to this audio @Megabooks because I think you‘d enjoy it and I‘m super excited it works for #Gambia @librarybelle @barbarabb 2y
Megabooks I had the Davis from the library but I wasn‘t in the mood and didn‘t want to force it. It is definitely on my TBR! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I am anxious to get to this one—and absolutely on audio! 2y
Cinfhen Absolutely audio is the way to go @BarbaraTheBibliophage and I agree @Megabooks wait until you‘re in the mood for a celebrity memoir 2y

Our vicious history of slavery & the toll it took on our country is handled so beautifully and delicately in this brilliant genealogical story of Alex Haley‘s roots. Where he could have dwelt on the worst of slavery, Haley focused on family life. It made it more real, to really feel with these characters what slavery was like. I especially appreciated the postscripts to this edition telling how Haley uncovered his roots and how he wrote this ⬇️

Texreader Novel—particularly his voyage to recreate Kunte Kinte‘s trip across the ocean. There is no doubt in my mind why this won the Pulitzer Prize & why it is essential reading. It‘s just so beautifully written especially about Gambia. We learn so so much about the lives of Africans and I just loved diving so deeply into that history. (edited) 2y
Texreader I do laugh at the fact that it‘s the longest book I‘ve read for #readingafrica2022 for one of Africa‘s smallest countries: #Gambia @Librarybelle @barbarabb Completed #chunksterchallenge2022 @Amiable and another #awesomeapril #readathon goal. @Andrew65 (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB Wonderful review! 2y
Tove_Reads This was one of the first adult books I read as a child 🙂 2y

Tamra I recall seeing bits of the film as a child - it was quite the miniseries event at the time. (edited) 2y
Texreader @Tamra Same here! As I‘ve been reading it I recall snippets. I was pretty young, maybe 8 or 10 but some things were unforgettable 2y
Amiable Loved this book when I first read it. May be time for a reread. 2y
Andrew65 A good book choice! 2y

I bought this for #Gambia for #ReadingAfrica2022. I think I‘m going to have to alternate between print and audio if I want to get through it. #chunkster #bookmail

Texreader It‘s an excellent book for #Gambia. Such a large part of the book shares minute details about it 2y
