Loving this whole podcast and she has great authors on with fascinating chats: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wiser-than-me-with-julia-louis-dreyfus/id1...
This was a family saga with magical realism and South American politics. There are stories of love but plenty of violence as well, and it does not end with a very hopeful outlook. I enjoyed the variety of characters in the family.
#1001books #audiobook #FoodAndLit #Chile #ReadTheWorld #ReadingTheWorld #ReadingTheAmericas2023
Such an impressive novel. Following generations of the Del Valle/Trueba family Allende weaves a tapestry of shifting politics, intergenerational trauma, and pivotal events in Chilean history. Humorous and hopeful, yet fraught with horror and tension. 8/10
For #ReadingTheAmericas2023 I select this author to represent Chile. I honestly wasn't sure about this one. I liked it and didn't all at the same time. I think in the end I decided to give this a pick as the author engaged my emotions in so many different ways that in the end the book left a mark on me and won't be one I soon forget. #bookspin @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB @TheAromaofBooks
A story of the brutality of man and the indomitable spirit of others, set during revolutionary times in Chile. The book is peopled arrogant, peasants and the down right crazy. Truthfully, a depressing story with an almost fatalist conclusion. I did not like most of the characters, but the granddaughter, Alba had many redeeming qualities.

I was in college when I was assigned to read this book for a class and I absolutely loved it, it was my first by Allende. Many of her stories are set against history and politics with some magic realism. I have since devoured many an Allende title and have enjoyed many of them. Some are better than others but her earliest titles are some of the best.
HAPPY #BOOKSPIN DAY TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE!
I am hype because although both of my picks this month are not small reads they are also not over 500 pages so I have somewhat of a respite from the chonky boi curse! Now I just need to work on my backlog and my reading life will be perfect lol.
3.5⭐️ was it a great book; surprisingly for the most part yes. What I struggled with was the character development; or rather the lack of accuracy in that development. I was told what the character was like but never actually shown by character behavior. It didn‘t match and it just felt off. The author did a lot of foreshadowing too that wasn‘t necessary.
This book came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Brilliant writing, and a book that will have you laughing with joy and weeping with sorrow. A multi-generational book that I truly wished never ended. I loved it!
The House of Spirits is generationally epic. Allende weaves a story riding on the backbone of a protagonist you should hate but can't (the way you would a troublesome grandfather). She tells rich stories of minor characters in paragraphs and sets the whole thing against an impressioniat painting of real world events and political upheaval. A masterpiece.
This was highly recommended on the second series of The Graham Norton Book Club. 156 pages in and loving it.
So much of this book made me feel such strong emotions that I think the impact of reading this story will be positive in the future once I get past the anger that was built up in me from page one. Allende has a power to make the reader feel absolute joy one page and then bottomless sorrow the next. My annotations hopefully illustrate my feelings without getting too preachy! #LMPBC #groupr #magicalrealism #bookjournal
Time certainly flew this month. I didn‘t manage to finish either draw because work got intense for like a week and a half. I‘m still super excited to see what the new picks will be though. As always I‘ve kept the same list with two new books to replace the previously drawn. The newcomers this month are the tagged and Dragonbone Chair. @TheAromaofBooks
“It was a world in which time was not marked by calendars or watches and objects had a life of their own, in which apparitions sat at the table and conversed with human beings, the past and the future formed part of a single unit, and the reality of the present was a kaleidoscope of jumbled mirrors where everything and anything could happen.” #lmpbc #groupr #magcialrealism
If it wasn't for Graham Norton's Book Club, I know this would not have been on my radar. I don't know how I have somehow never come across Allende, but after hearing such rave reviews I can't wait to begin.
I am so excited to be reading more #magicalrealism with you guys! Let me know if you see anything interesting of my picks for #lmpbc ! #teamr #groupr
Cozy blanket, breakfast, and a book. I love a slow morning.
Excited for another month of #bookspin! Here is my list for November. #bookspin #doublespin #bookspinbingo
A multigenerational family drama, set in Chile in the years leading up to Pinochet's military coup in the early 1970s. I admire the rich prose, the engaging storytelling, and the nuanced characters, though themes of sexual violence were difficult to stomach. It's a terrific book I hope to never read again.
This is my #BookSpin for May, also the 8♠️ for #TBRDeckOfCards: a historical novel in translation.
@TheAromaofBooks
@Clwojick
My #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin reads for May. The first is also my next #TBRDeckOfCards read: a historical novel in translation. The other is also a translation, from a 1922 French adventure novel. Looking forward to both. Thanks @TheAromaofBooks !
My reading spot today. #safetravels #springbreak
“At times I feel as if I lived all this before and that I have already written these very words, but I know it was not I: it was another woman, who kept her notebooks so that one day I could use them. I write, she wrote, that memory is fragile and the space of a single life is brief, passing so quickly...”
It took me a bit to really get into the story, but once I did I was entranced. The prose is amazing and I love reading multigenerational stories set in places I don‘t know.
1) Getting in my #bookspinbingo at the last minute.
2) Banned book
3) This is my first Allende book. Took awhile to get into this multi-generational story of a family in Chile, but the ending is really great. The family has many struggles, some of them their own fault, but it ends on a hopeful note. The political turmoil is the backdrop, then takes center stage in the last bit. This story will stick with me. @TheAromaofBooks
“He was frightened by the violent turn the struggle had taken, polarizing everyone into two extremes and leaving the center to a flighty, indecisive group that was waiting to see who the winner might be so they could vote for him. “
—this book has some politics that are way too similar to present day.
#AugustAuthors Day 7: I do have a stack of #IsabelAllende novels in my Women-Author-Bookshelf. I devoured her house of the spirits/eva luna period. I still have to catch up with her more recent novels.
I loved the tagged book so much when I first read it.
Giving this one a reread for book club this month and it‘s just as amazing as when I read it in high school.
Good morning y‘all! We had AC installed yesterday, and woke up to a chilly 58degF windy morning 🤦♀️ Def some spirits at work here! 😜
I had high hopes for this. I was hoping to like it more than I did. 2.5 stars
Isabel Allende is a #SouthAmericanauthor I‘ve always been aware of but have not yet read. #BiblioMAYnia
#BiblioMAYnia This #SouthAmericanAuthor is a Chilean whose novels are often based upon her personal experience and historical events, and prominently feature the lives of women. Some of the books contain elements of magical realism. The tagged book is the only book of hers I‘ve read.
Following the life of the Trueba family patriarch this book is More than just a family drama, but the history of a country.
Recently I have been on a little Allende kick and I am amazed that this was actually her first book.
This is a little confusing, because I recently finished "Portrait in Sepia" and a lot of the characters are in this book as well. But then I see that this one has been published first, but chronologically this one should be later because Clara is already seven.... confusing...

Book five. There's a reason why I've posted about this book so many times.
Umm just couldn‘t get past this dude‘s treatment of woman! What an a**
#Ispy with my little eye for @Texreader some pink covers on my shelf 🌸🌷🌺
I would love to see some yellow covers to get that Easter feeling @Marina_h & @Kalalalatja 🐣
Gorgeous, intricate and confounding. I can‘t believe it took me so long to discover this brilliant novel!
Recuerdo haberlo leído en secundaria: es un libro que se lee fácilmente, y la historia te captura.
Definitivamente hay que leerlo!
