Call Down the Hawk
Call Down the Hawk | Maggie Stiefvater
158 posts | 73 read | 6 reading | 58 to read
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Raven Boys, a mesmerizing story of dreams and desires, death and destiny. The dreamers walk among us . . . and so do the dreamed. Those who dream cannot stop dreaming -- they can only try to control it. Those who are dreamed cannot have their own lives -- they will sleep forever if their dreamers die. And then there are those who are drawn to the dreamers. To use them. To trap them. To kill them before their dreams destroy us all. Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality. Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she comes to the dream object she is after, the more inextricably she becomes tied to it. Carmen Farooq-Lane is a hunter. Her brother was a dreamer . . . and a killer. She has seen what dreaming can do to a person. And she has seen the damage that dreamers can do. But that is nothing compared to the destruction that is about to be unleashed . . .

Ronan and company are back and better than ever, and the case, the writing, and the stakes are *chef‘s kiss*. Stiefvater is one of my all-time favorite authors, and with the last book in this trilogy coming out in October, I figured it was high time to read it.

I‘m in love! This book is beautifully written and the characters are amazing. I love the Lynch brothers so much. Surprisingly even Declan. I loved this book so much I immediately went to buy book two the next day after I finished it! A five stars from me!

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this one as much as The Raven Cycle books, as Ronan wasn't my favorite character from those, and the dreaming was my least favorite magical part as well - but I really liked this one. Weirdly, it was in large part because of Declan, who strives to be as boring and nonmagical as possible, and with whom I somehow related. There's some great world-building here & I am so stoked to read book 2 next month!!

TheSpineView Way to go! 1y
Clare-Dragonfly Declan is so great in this book, isn‘t he? 1y
TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView - Thank you!!! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly - I had a lot of empathy for him during the Raven Cycle - I'm the oldest, too, and sometimes you just want to shake your younger siblings because they just aren't doing things the RIGHT WAY! 😂 I loved seeing him start to accept that he needs to be more than he is being. I also think a reason that Stiefvater's writing is so good is because she takes the time to make secondary-ish characters more knowable, & I love that. 1y

#BookReport - I started out quite well, finishing The Raven Cycle series early in the week, but work got a little crazy & we actually had STUFF going on TWO evenings this week, which, considering that my husband & I are both serious introverts, was pretty unusual! 😂 I did finish both my chapter-a-day books & am really looking forward to the next in both series in May. Hoping to finish the tagged book today so I can start on the Mansfield ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Park retelling - I've heard good things about the series!! A bingo this month is not looking likely, so I'm setting my sights on May!! @Cinfhen 1y
EdnaC I read that book last year sometime. I‘m looking forward to the next one coming out. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @EdnaC - It's gone a different direction from the original series, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless. I'm also excited about book two!! 1y

EdnaC @TheAromaofBooks wait! There is an original series?!?! I had no idea. My son just got it for me for my birthday last year. ;) 1y
TheAromaofBooks @EdnaC - haha yes!! The Raven Cycle, which starts with The Raven Boys. Four books. Ronan and Adam are two of the main characters, although the series focuses a lot on their friends, Gansey and Blue. There's a lot of the backstory for the Lynch brothers as well, so if you enjoyed Call Down the Hawk it's worth going back to read them, I think. 1y
EdnaC @TheAromaofBooks well that‘s exciting. I‘m going to need to get that series for sure. Thanks!! 1y

I really enjoyed this. I love this author but was disappointed in the end of the Raven Cycle as I thought the last book was very convoluted and confusing. Turns out, the author was battling an undiagnosed illness during that time and wrote a whole blog post about her own views on the books and how her illness impacted her writing. Very interesting! I loved her continuation of Ronan‘s story. The quote made me laugh...I suffer from this! 😳

Bookgirl If you‘re interested in reading about the author‘s illness and The Raven King, in her words: https://maggiestiefvater.com/the-years-without-words/ 1y
wanderinglynn OMG. Her struggle. So heartbreaking and sadly, too common. And so infuriating when that one medical researcher “sometimes women of your age just get sad.” 🤬🤬🤬 what BS! 1y
monalyisha I didn‘t know any of that & I love her books. Thank you for sharing! 1y

Bookgirl @wanderinglynn YES! That comment made me so mad! I have a medical condition that went undiagnosed/misdiagnosed for 3 years so her story spoke to me. My symptoms were thankfully nowhere as debilitating. Happy she found answers! 1y
Bookgirl @monalyisha I do too and you‘re welcome! I‘m glad she shared it with us all. 1y

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH

I am a huge Ronan fan, I always have been. So back when Maggie first said she was going to be writing a trilogy with him as an MC, I almost died.

This book actually killed me though. The storyline is so interesting, but the writing? I could have wept just by how beautiful the sentences she wrote were. I could start it over immediately.

Beautiful. Incredible. Witty. Breathtaking. Enchanting.

This might be my favorite of Maggie‘s books and that‘s saying something, as I adored Blue lily, lily blue.
The dynamic and relationship between the 3 lynch brothers is so incredible nuanced and interesting. There were many moments that had me snorting out loud with laughter as I listened to this at my desk, getting weird looks from my colleagues. I loved seeing more to Declan.

It's been a while since I finished The Raven Cycle, so I was worried that there would be too much distance when I picked up Call Down the Hawk, the first book in Maggie Stiefvater's new linked trilogy, The Dreamers. I shouldn't have worried.⠀

What makes The Raven Cycle so brilliant--in addition to the world building--is Stiefvater's sense of character. And it's this familiarity that led me into Call Down the Hawk without missing a beat. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod This book focuses on the Lynch brothers, Ronan and Declan. Ronan, one of the quartet of characters at the center of The Raven Cycle, is a dreamer, someone who can manifest his dreams into the real world. Declan, the archetypal older brother, has devoted his life to maintaining a sense of normalcy in the face of this kind of magic. Their father, also a Dreamer, was a reckless type of authority figure, and their mother Aurora was a being he Dreamed. 2y
UnabridgedPod When their father died, their mother could not stay real. Since the youngest Lynch brother, Matthew, is also Dreamed-- this time by Ronan when he was a toddler, both Declan and Ronan protect him from reality and from the potential consequences of something happening to Ronan.⠀

All of this sounds confusing, I imagine, but it feels eminently logical, possible, and true within the world of the book. ⬇️
2y
UnabridgedPod Things take unexpected turns, as they always do in a Stiefvater book, and the plot is engaging and fast moving. She's chosen here to shift points of view with each chapter, and so the reader's knowledge extends beyond any one character's point of view, a decision that made me aware that the book was spiraling toward a fate that I dreaded--bad things are going to happen. But sometimes, those bad things lead us to find unlikely heroes. ⬇️ 2y
UnabridgedPod Stiefvater's writing is gorgeous, and this type of epic YA fantasy would be a great thing to dive in to (particularly right now! Lose yourself in this world).⠀

What fantasy would you recommend? Who else is a Stiefvater fan?

I spent a big chunk of last night assembling this tiny metal model of Moby Dick.

The model was was way more fun than I expected, and making it let me finish reading CALL DOWN THE HAWK for the second time in two months. While doing that with the Raven Cycle seemed to teach me immediate rereads aren‘t my thing, I actually loved CDTH even more this time through. Huh. I guess familiarity (or lack thereof) counts for a lot. #audiocrafting

xicanti @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks honestly, there‘s very little creativity required. There‘re directions that outline the correct order to assemble the pieces and whether each little tab should be bent or twisted for the best fit. The biggest decision I had to make was how to bend the book‘s pages to the correct angle. 2y

I devoured this in two days. My heart hurts for each of the Lynch brothers for so many different reasons. I wasn‘t expecting to come out having feelings towards Declan but oh does my heart hurt for him. The sacrifices both him and Ronan make both hit in such different drastic measures. And once again Maggie pulled off that slow burn story telling that just gives you the need to keep reading. Ugh I love this!!!

Clare-Dragonfly I didn‘t think it was possible to care as much about Declan as this book made me! 2y
Sweetkokoro @Clare-Dragonfly Right!! I never hated Declan but he was far from being a favorite, but by the end of this book, my heart was breaking for him. I had such a clearer understanding of who he was and why he acts the way he does. 2y

Call Down the Hawk is a story about dreams. The weight of dreams, the consequences of bringing your dreams to life, and why dreams are worth fighting for, and also why they are dangerous under the wrong control. It is the most powerful piece of literature I have ever read, even if I can't get the rest of the world to read it. But that‘s ok. It‘s not for the rest of the world. This book is for the dreamers.

Hm. So, I don‘t quite know what to do with this.

I didn‘t *love* it. Everyone‘s such a vulnerable bad-ass. It feels a bit much. But I didn‘t love The Raven Boys the first time I cracked it open, either...and Blue, Gansey, Ronan, Adam, & Noah (& all the women at 300 Fox Way) ended up being some of my closest fictional friends. So, who knows what time will bring?

I‘m giving it a “pick” anyway, because it‘s Maggie Stiefvater. How could I not? 🤷‍♀️

December stats! This was a pretty good month for TBR reduction and generalized awesomeness. I reread some amazing stuff and found two new-to-me 5-star reads. (The other was CARDINAL by Erin McRae & Racheline Maltese.)

My diversity balance slipped a little, but since it was the last month of a year where I read a huge number of diverse books, I ain‘t TOO concerned. Still, I‘ll make sure I regain that balance as I start 2020.

I finished this audiobook a few weeks ago but guess I forgot to post. This is a spinoff of the Raven Cycle series (which you need to definitely read first) that centers around Ronan and his brothers. It has the same surreal quality of the Raven Cycle series. And I think it might be better to read than listen to, at least for me, so will do that when the rest of the series comes out. Good start to this new journey.
