Holy cats, was this great! Written as journal entries and interviews, this is horrifying story of a perfect storm of a volcanic eruption, inept city folk moving to an ill-prepared, high tech “green” community, and….Sasquatch. Only Bigfoot isn‘t a shy, gentle giant—the creatures are cunning, strong, vicious and actually very scary. I listened to the audiobook which has a marvelous cast. Very well done all around.

Catching up on my book reviews from past 2 months. This was a so-so read but a hoot for sure. A good audio read. Mt. Rainier blows up and makes sasquatch ornery. The bigfoots go after a bunch of rich techies who have created a planned community on the east of Mt. Rainier. What's not to love about that?

marleed Hey, I hope you are feeling okay and are on the other side of treatment! 1y
SamAnne @marleed thanks for asking. No….lumpectomy went well! Clean margins and nothing in my lymphs. But I have a bad version of cancer cell. They wanted me on intense chemo before surgery and I declined for time being. When I get home from vacay I start 4 weeks of radiation. The chemo they want to give sounds worse than the cancer. My body reacts badly to drugs and chemicals. Have a gut feeling it will not bode well for me. 1y
SamAnne @marleed instead this year I am traveling instead to Iceland and Spain. A week in Hawaii at a friend‘s house post-radiation. And am launching a business venture with my sweetie. I‘m changing up my already pretty healthy diet (very little sugar) and going to get an physically and emotionally healthy as I can. Likely will take one drug that‘s by pill. I can choose chemo next winter if Indecide. And I‘m reading lots! 1y
marleed @SamAnne Oh geez, I am so sorry. I think of you so often. I wish I were closer to Spokane than Kansas City (like Butte) where I could physically offer to be of assistance to you. Please know every positive vibe in my being is sent to the universe for your full recovery. 1y
SamAnne @marleed oh thank you. I have a good support network of friends and a partner. Am working to get into a positive head space. I have never had a medical issue that required constant interaction with the medical industrial complex (I have excellent doctors! I think they are frustrated with me as a patient…😂😂😂). I‘ve never even had surgery before. At 54 that‘s a pretty good run. 1y

I really like the way Max Brooks tells a narrative. Interweaving interviews, snippets from cryptozoological text, and diary entries in this case. And I enjoy how the suspense builds up through the book.

Following the eruption of mount rainier, Greenloop are cut off from the world. They can‘t go for help, and something is moving through the forests towards them.

I powered through this one as I really needed to know what happened next!

I had so much fun reading this (had to move away from the window the night I stayed up to 2am to finish!)! I loved World War Z and Devolution didn‘t disappoint! As a child, I was certain that Sasquatch was alive & well & living in CT. I saw myself in so many of the references and to this day I‘m known for my Tall Man love! I have multiple stickers, T-shirts, & a Squatch air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror. Yes, a perfect match for me!

Loved this book! I‘m usually not so quick to pick up anything labeled “horror” but I‘m so glad I was with this one! I was hooked from the beginning and it kept me turning page after page. I couldn‘t put it down! I never knew I needed such a book about Bigfoot, but I‘m so glad it exists and that I read it.

I loved the way this was mostly told through journal entries, but also incorporated interviews, documentaries, and other excerpts from radio shows and scientific articles. It gave the story an amazing fullness, let the reader anticipate what was going to happen, and backed up the natural progression of action by making everything seem possible 👣🌋🏡

AFrostCauseReads @TheAromaofBooks this was my #doublespin pick for September. It was also my #bookspin pick for august. I guess the universe really wanted me to read this one, lol 3y

Holy Hell! I really didn't know what to expect going into this book. I'm not typically a big fan of cryptozoology books. The format really worked for this subject-the story is revealed through journal entries, interviews, & news articles. The suspense builds at a steady pace & the ending explodes with action. The author builds on that little anxiety that exists in all of us, even if we don't believe, about what lives in the woods.👣
⭐⭐⭐⭐

BookwormM This gave me nightmares so realistic 3y
ShelleyBooksie I struggled to invest with the characters on this one. It was super gory in places as well. I did like the ending. 3y
NikkiM5 One of my favorite reads this year 👍🏾 3y

FelinesAndFelonies @BookwormM I found this one really creepy and unsettling. It was similar to the way I felt when I read The Hollow Places. @ShelleyBooksie I agree that the characters weren't gripping but the story overrode that for me. The atmosphere and plot line had me far more invested than the characters. @NikkiM5 I really liked it. One of the better thrillers I have read. Can you recommend any similar books? 3y
NikkiM5 @FelinesAndFelonies If you haven‘t read Brook‘s World War Z it is the best, it‘s nothing like the movie. 3y

This book got me thinking. This is the first book Ive ever read about Bigfoot. How far of a stretch would it be for it to be non-fiction? The way that this book is written makes it very convincing. The idea of it freaks me out a bit. If nothing else, it was a good and quick read.

Pick! Pick! Pick! If you like World War Z style character account books, I believe you will enjoy Devolution. Bigfoot is not a monster/urban legend creature I usually care for, but because it was Brooks I gave it a shot. I may be a Bigfoot fan now. Character development was great, the storyline was very intense and I was scared walking my dog near the woods while listening to the book. 😂 #bookspin #doublespin

Reagan It was so fun! 3y
NikkiM5 @Reagan agreed, I didn‘t want it to end 3y
Reggie Lol, yeah I don‘t think I could have been near the woods reading this one either. I loved this book. I started out really not liking the main character but really came to root and care for her. 3y
Reggie Ps her and the little girl are still alive hunting down the other Bigfoot right? 3y

I got a kick out of listening to the audiobook for this Sasquatch horror novel by Max Brooks. It has a full cast, led by Judy Greer, with Nathan Fillion, Terry Gross, Kate Mulgrew, and more. Part diary, part interview, part scientific treatise, Devolution was an entertaining, darkly funny, and...violently gross ride. 😜🦶

I enjoyed this slow burning thriller! Told through diary entries and interviews, this had a true-crime documentary feel and Max Brooks left you to draw your own interpretations a lot of the time. An unreliable narrator and an unresolved mystery just add to the realistic feel. I did have a niggle with the characters though - some were richly drawn but a lot of them lacked depth, possibly due to the diary format. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Hands down one of the best thrillers I‘ve ever read. It was simultaneously scary, gruesome, and entertaining. I‘ve always been enthralled with the concept of Bigfoot, so I couldn‘t wait to read this. Once I started, I could not stop. I even had nightmares a few times when I read it before bed. What a great and interesting read! I‘d highly recommend!!

ElleSkel I have this one from the library now, going to start it this week I hope! 3y
WonderlandMind Let me know what you think! 3y
ShelleyBooksie It was my most disliked book of 2020! That being said, many people love it and I was rooting for characters at the end. 3y
See All 7 Comments
WonderlandMind @ShelleyBooksie different opinions makes for great discussion! I like the Bigfoot lore so that was my main reason for loving it 3y
ShelleyBooksie @WonderlandMind - I thought that part of the book was cool. I found all of the detail about the eco places at the beginning was too much. I really enjoyed the Bigfoot family but I am a wimp and the gore factor was high! I also listened to this on audio and did not love the narrator - reading it may have changed my.opinion :) The scene where a person is so smoothed their intestines come.out.of their nose is.still with me months later - lol. 3y
ShelleyBooksie Smashed not smoothed 3y
ElleSkel @WonderlandMind I finished this one the other day and I wanted so much to love it but didn‘t. I liked it, and unlike @ShelleyBooksie I really enjoyed all the science stuff ( and the horror, I love horror) but what I didn‘t love were the characters. Maybe it was that the audiobook wasn‘t a good fit for me. I just couldn‘t get attached to the characters enough to really get sucked into the story. I loved the concept and they way it was done though! 3y

A planned community in the wilds is confronted with an unexpected threat after Mt Rainier erupts, cutting them off from the rest of society. The primary narrator, Kate, is anxious and non-confrontational, but as their situation becomes increasingly dire, she is taken under the wing of an experienced survivor, and develops newfound strength. This was an interesting premise, and mostly good, but ultimately a horror novel. Do not read while camping.

In an effort to save her marriage, Kate has moved to Greenloop. Created as a new eco-community with the latest technology for every, and it seems like a dream and a fresh start. This was all true until Mt Reiner erupted. Everything changed and a few weeks later, USGS officials and others come across a battlefield which was once Greenloop. This is the story of what happened to Kate, Greenloop, and an unforeseen encounter with Sasquatch.

This was almost a so-so for me, but I think since I just read World War Z that my expectations may have been too high.

Overall, Brooks writes a fun tale involving murders, a family of sasquatch, and the humans who refuse to fall victim to them.

It's definitely not as well done as WWZ, but still a good read.

TheNeverendingTBR I think WWZ was overrated so I'll probably not bother with this one then 😏 3y
