Les Miserables: (penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)
Les Miserables: (penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) | Victor Hugo
The first new Penguin Classics translation in forty years of Victor Hugo's masterpiece?published in a stunning Graphic Deluxe edition The subject of the world's longest-running musical and the recent Academy Award?nominated and BAFTA-winning film starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, Les Misrables is a genuine literary treasure. Victor Hugo's tale of injustice, heroism, and love follows the fortunes of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict determined to put his criminal past behind him, and has been a perennial favorite since it first appeared nearly 150 years ago. This exciting new translation with Jillian Tamaki's brilliant cover art will be a gift both to readers who have already fallen for its timeless story and to new readers discovering it for the first time.

Under @thebookhippie 's “slow and steady“ guidance, the 3rd time was the charm for this tome. While reading this book, I have experienced a full spectrum of emotions. I have admired the absolute beauty of Hugo's writing, but I've also rolled my eyes at his verbosity. I've been devastated and inspired. It's truly an opus. #readlesmis

And now I'm so proud of myself, I'm starting #proust2026 tomorrow1 🙃 Watch out 2026, I'm feeling French.

Throwing confetti and tooting a horn to celebrate finishing Les Mis today. I did not stick to chapter a day, I often fell behind and occasionally read ahead, but I finished! Although Hugo would go off on tangents that meandered I loved it all. Thanks to @TheBookHippie for the check ins which helped keep me reading. So happy to finally read the work behind one of my favorite musicals.

Texreader Congrats!!! That‘s an enormous undertaking and I‘m impressed! I bailed at the convent. Maybe someday I‘ll make it through it because I love the musical as well!! 2w

Would love to read @ChrisBohjalian ‘s afterward!

***The only completely unabridged paperback edition*** of Victor Hugo‘s masterpiece—a sweeping tale of love, loss, valor, & passion.
🇫🇷 Afterword by Chris Bohjalian 🇫🇷
Translated by Lee Fahnestock and Norman MacAfee
Introduction by Lee Fahnestock
Penguin Random House Signet Classics

TheBookHippie Far as I know it is. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie I like signets but the print is too small. I think our edition is not considered paperback … weird as that sounds. 3w
tpixie @TheBookHippie I think you are right. Ours has higher quality paper, bigger font, and extra annotations. (edited) 3w

TheBookHippie @tpixie ours is also published after the signet. 3w
tpixie @TheBookHippie yes as I‘m looking into this more I see that. I just got a new email from penguin advertising this edition. On further review, I saw that it was published earlier. (edited) 3w

#readlesmis @TheBookHippie

First published in 1862, LES MIS is one of the most ambitious and influential novels in world literature that explores poverty, justice, and redemption in post-revolutionary France. The story centers on Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who rebuilds his life through compassion, while being relentlessly pursued by the rigid Inspector Javert. ⬇️

dabbe Through characters like Fantine, Cosette, and Gavroche, Hugo presents a powerful portrait of human suffering and resilience. The novel‘s greatest strength is its emotional depth and moral complexity. Hugo vividly exposes social injustice and the harsh realities of life for the poor, while emphasizing the possibility of personal transformation. However, the book‘s immense length and frequent historical and philosophical digressions can slow ... ⬇️ 1mo
dabbe ... the narrative and challenge modern readers. Its dramatic, often sentimental style may also feel heavy at times.

Despite these potential drawbacks for some, LES MISERABLES remains a major work of world literature, valued for its enduring themes and powerful human stories.

I absolutely loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was lucky enough to see the musical on Broadway in the early 80s. From that point on, I always aspired to read it. Tried two times and failed miserably ... until the #readlesmis group and @TheBookHippie. As much as I adored the musical, the book, of course, is better. I snot-nosed cried my way through to the end. 💙🇫🇷♥️

This may be my most controversial post.
I prayed to the book gods with the upmost of respect while making my Travel Les Mis book.
I don‘t want to get behind further, & just can‘t carry the full book on vacation.
This book was waiting in the wild to be used & loved.
With an X-Acto blade I cut the cover, several of the pages, & the appendix in the back. Now Les MIs can return to France, but in the beautiful countryside

lil1inblue @cuilin @thebookhippie I'm fascinated by the evolution and blending of languages, so anything that even borders on that will send me down the rabbit hole. 🙃 Slang origins can be particularly intriguing. 🤓 4mo

Interesting- in the same day I came upon the same French phrase!
“Entre chien et loup “ - literally between dog and wolf- it means evening.
I‘m reading the Languedoc Trilogy in advance to my trip to SE France ?? (Toulouse, Figeac, & Béduer) since the books are based in that area & Carcassonne.
This phrase is in Book 2- Sepulchre
I‘m lucky to travel, but these travels will make me even further behind on #ReadLesMis

tpixie I insist on reading the book itself & cannot imagine lugging this heavy book on the plane. Dare I buy a second book, tear out some pages, and take with me? Then copy over my notes? 😂 I guess I could actually do that with my ebook, just not as easily… 4mo
Cuilin 2009 I got to see the fireworks on Bastille day over the castle in Carcassone. It is a beautiful fully walled city. I hope you get to see it!! oh, I like the idea of using a secondhand book!! 4mo
dabbe I thought the same when going to Canada. I just couldn't lug the 5+ pound tome on the plane ... and then I got behind and just got caught back up. 😂 4mo

TheBookHippie Oh I‘d get a used copy and take it apart then put it back 🤣🤣🤣🙌🏼👀🫣 4mo
Lcsmcat There‘s a novel by that name, by Irene Némirovsky , but I don‘t know if it‘s been translated into English. It‘s not in the Litsy data base. 4mo
charl08 I've scanned pages from a travel guide before when I was only going to one area (and the book was a brick). Not sure if reading a photocopy would be worse than an e book though? 4mo
tpixie @Cuilin oh! What a unique experience! I bet that was magical 💙🤍❤️ 4mo
tpixie @dabbe yes! I‘m so behind!! 4mo
tpixie @Lcsmcat Oh! I‘ve read her Suite Française. Her personal story is fascinating. 4mo
tpixie @charl08 ohh that‘s an idea! I could copy it at work for free…. @TheBookHippie I did find one for 9.50 on Amazon. I‘m tempted… 4mo
Lcsmcat @tpixie Yes! That was my introduction to her. I then read everything I could find. My old library had a huge foreign language section so even works that hadn‘t yet been translated were available to me. 4mo
tpixie @Lcsmcat amazing! You really are fluent!! What a great library! 4mo

“Monsieur complains?”
“About you!” said the pedestrian.
“The bureau is closed,” said Gavroche. “I‘m receiving no more complaints.”

I think I‘m a chapter behind, but this chapter 1 of book 6 is fabulous !!! ❤️Gavroche

TheBookHippie From now til the end of the book- last time I adored. It‘s so much fun to reread and catch more! 4mo
dabbe I adore him, too! 💙🤍♥️ 4mo

Messy bookcase? √ Sunflowers from Matt? √ Book that you need to get caught up on? √ San Pellegrino Limonata & vodka? √ Painkillers? √ (for the shoulder, not the book ... yet).

I‘m still terribly behind, but at least I‘m in July and not June.
Love this quote about Monsieur Mabeuf.
“Like everyone else, he had his own - ist ending. … He was neither a royalist, a Bonapartist…..
- he was a book-specialist!
