I haven‘t picked up this book in months and am so behind, but I‘m determined to finish this chunkster by the end of January. Wish me luck! 😬

I wasn't very good at keeping up with this, but I've enjoyed seeing what others picked! Here's another catch up post:
September: Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier
October: Kill Her Twice by Stacey Lee
November: Life with Picasso by Francoise Gilot
December: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

DECEMBER favorite and favorite of the year: LES MISERABLES.

And even with different wild cards, it still won out, @TheBookHippie. #missionaccomplished 💙🤍♥️

Can you believe it, @TheBookHippie? Can you really? I'm a bit stunned if I do say so myself. Thank you for this monumental achievement--for me, anyway. 😘 Wonder if Proust will be the favorite next year? Somehow I doubt it, but we'll see. 🤣
#vivelafrance 💙🤍♥️

Under @thebookhippie 's “slow and steady“ guidance, the 3rd time was the charm for this tome. While reading this book, I have experienced a full spectrum of emotions. I have admired the absolute beauty of Hugo's writing, but I've also rolled my eyes at his verbosity. I've been devastated and inspired. It's truly an opus. #readlesmis
And now I'm so proud of myself, I'm starting #proust2026 tomorrow1 🙃 Watch out 2026, I'm feeling French.

Throwing confetti and tooting a horn to celebrate finishing Les Mis today. I did not stick to chapter a day, I often fell behind and occasionally read ahead, but I finished! Although Hugo would go off on tangents that meandered I loved it all. Thanks to @TheBookHippie for the check ins which helped keep me reading. So happy to finally read the work behind one of my favorite musicals.

Just saw this quote on instagram and had to share it.

Would love to read @ChrisBohjalian ‘s afterward!

By far the longest book I‘ve ever read, followed closely by ‘It‘. This was my 2nd attempt; I‘m happy & proud of myself for sticking with it. I really enjoyed it, even if some parts dragged on or were heavier with info. That being said, they helped with the understanding of situations, context and characters

First published in 1862, LES MIS is one of the most ambitious and influential novels in world literature that explores poverty, justice, and redemption in post-revolutionary France. The story centers on Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who rebuilds his life through compassion, while being relentlessly pursued by the rigid Inspector Javert. ⬇️

Clocking in at 1302 pages (not including the extra 100+ pages of notes), this baby is finished! #huzzah!

I was lucky enough to see the musical on Broadway in the early 80s. From that point on, I always aspired to read it. Tried two times and failed miserably ... until the #readlesmis group and @TheBookHippie. As much as I adored the musical, the book, of course, is better. I snot-nosed cried my way through to the end. 💙🇫🇷♥️
One year to finish.
No words can do it justice--
Except “Vive la France!“

Still can't believe it's the last month of the year.

Can't believe we're on the last two book of the year! I was waiting all year to finally add LES MISERABLES! I've been reading it since 1/1/25 with the #readlesmis crew, and we will finish this month! Right, @TheBookHippie? 🤩

11 months in, this sentence made me laugh. 😅 (no book hate intended, just a little fun 😉)

Got my greyhound drink and am ready to get caught up with LES MIS. I'm sitting out front for a change with my two buds who love putting their faces on the ottoman. Happy Friday, everyone! ♥️🍁🧡

Well this book took me 10 months to read. I took my time with it. I did like the book, not one of my all time favorites but still a good read. I rated the book a 3 out of 5 stars.

How apropo!

This may be my most controversial post.
I prayed to the book gods with the upmost of respect while making my Travel Les Mis book.
I don‘t want to get behind further, & just can‘t carry the full book on vacation.
This book was waiting in the wild to be used & loved.
With an X-Acto blade I cut the cover, several of the pages, & the appendix in the back. Now Les MIs can return to France, but in the beautiful countryside

“You can try all you like you won‘t go in, I‘m not the daughter of a dog, I‘m the daughter of a wolf. There are six of you, what‘s that to me? You‘re men. Well, I‘m a woman. I‘m not afraid of you, not one bit”. Eponine- Les Miserable.

Plugging along!

The title of the book appears.
“les misérables - the wretched“
That always jumps out at me when I read!

All the discussion of slang in today's chapter reminded me of this article from 2019. It's not necessarily related to the book, but I found it interesting. My brain goes down weird rabbit holes sometimes. 🙃

Interesting- in the same day I came upon the same French phrase!
“Entre chien et loup “ - literally between dog and wolf- it means evening.
I‘m reading the Languedoc Trilogy in advance to my trip to SE France ?? (Toulouse, Figeac, & Béduer) since the books are based in that area & Carcassonne.
This phrase is in Book 2- Sepulchre
I‘m lucky to travel, but these travels will make me even further behind on #ReadLesMis

“Monsieur complains?”
“About you!” said the pedestrian.
“The bureau is closed,” said Gavroche. “I‘m receiving no more complaints.”
I think I‘m a chapter behind, but this chapter 1 of book 6 is fabulous !!! ❤️Gavroche

Messy bookcase? √ Sunflowers from Matt? √ Book that you need to get caught up on? √ San Pellegrino Limonata & vodka? √ Painkillers? √ (for the shoulder, not the book ... yet).
Looking forward to this. 🧡🩶💛

I‘m still terribly behind, but at least I‘m in July and not June.
Love this quote about Monsieur Mabeuf.
“Like everyone else, he had his own - ist ending. … He was neither a royalist, a Bonapartist…..
- he was a book-specialist!
