Fall of Giants
Fall of Giants: Book One of the Century Trilogy | Ken Follett
Ken Folletts magnificent new historical epic begins, as five interrelated families move through the momentous dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for womens suffrage. A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a mans world in the mining pits.An American law student rejected in love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilsons White House. A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy.And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution. From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes us into the inextricably entangled fates of five familiesand into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again.

I am in a reading slump. So I‘m revisiting some novels in hopes of breaking the slump. I want to finish The Century Trilogy this year, so I‘m re-reading this one again so I can get acquainted with all the families & their stories. At nearly 1,000 pages, it may take a while. Wish me luck! 📚How do YOU break a reading slump?📚 #YearoftheChunksters

Saw They Shall Not Grow Old today. The books and the movie have different perspectives (Fall of Giants has at least 3 perspectives on the World War). The combination of the prescriptions about Russian workmen and England normal soldiers help me build a comprehensive introspection about the World War I.

As I said before I learned more about World War One from Ken Follett than I have ever learned in school. Very interesting. 🤩

I liked most of the characters and how Follet manages to provide them with authentic backgrounds.
As my knowledge of the facts wasn‘t very deep I was surprised here and there but it was nice how certain journeys through life puzzled together in the end.

I am already curious for Volume 2 since Follet alludes to it wittily.

Ericalambbrown I loved this series. I learned a ton reading these - I was always stopping to look things up. 4mo
Buechersuechtling @Ericalambbrown Yeah, welcome to my world. I very often do this, then one entry and fact leads to another and I end up somewhere completely different from where I started. 😄 I was surprised that I liked the “Titans” as much as I did because I usually am sick of WWI-and WWII-stories. I always feel they are bold and simple with a love story added on top. But not this one. Glad I gave it a try. 4mo

Still entertaining (one third is over).

At times I‘m not sure if I find the description of military manoeuvres tiring – because at other times I find it interesting to learn more about World War One than I have ever learned in school. For example, I yesterday by a five minute research finally found out how it came that Germany is considered to be a guilty party even if an Austrian 🇦🇹 has been murdered in Serbia. 🙊 (Don‘t judge me, please.)

It‘s only Tuesday but feels like the whole week can go to waste.

I left work earlier. “We need to dismiss people by the end of the year but sorry folks, we can‘t yet say how many and who.” Great news. 🤢 Not.

I‘m glad I have this audiobook. It distracts.

I like it so far. My first thought was that there obviously are people who get up even earlier than I do.
My second thought was that I know almost nothing about mining.

Jari-chan Das klingt ja schrecklich! Ich hoffe, alles wird gut ❤ 4mo

Not the audiobook I wanted to start tomorrow but since it took me 3 different audiobooks to lend and uncounted tries to try to download each one on my device I was happy that 1,5 hours ago at least _this_one_ was finally downloaded properly so I will have a functioning companion tomorrow morning.

I know in this situation it‘s kind of complaining about first world problems but still I would have preferred “Widow for a Year” … 🤷🏽‍♀️

I just finished it, reading through the last 200 pages without being able to stop! Historical fiction at his best with Ken Follett, no doubt. To me being passionate about history this is another way of reading about it. Now, let‘s start the second book of the XX century trilogy! #2019

Finally ended this one today.
Highly recommended for everyone who likes historical fiction, it's detail is it's USP.Looking forward to other parts.
If you do read it, please keep an ice pack with you for the hand cramps and comments like "how can you read such a long book""I would run away just by looking at the size of this book" etc etc

PS:Comments translated to bad English from Hindi(my native language), kind of loses the essence!

blurb
Shamzi

As I finish this book, one has to appreciate the extensive research that must have been done to write this book.I loved the parts of fictional characters with real life people. It also argues correctly that WW I was an unnecessary war, and the part aristocracy played in starting a brutal war in Germany, Russia and even Britain.America comes out good BTW. Read it if you love historical fiction but there is a lot of realism for history buffs as well.

blurb
Shamzi

Grigori and Walter are two other characters whose arc i really enjoyed. Walter, a very intelligent and astute man and Grigori, a brave man who defied his masters and contributed in starting a revolution.

blurb
Shamzi

counted 8 central characters around which the story revolves and ot is hard to pick a favorite. Everone delights or dismays at some point. The most fascinating would be Ethel, a feminist, a powerful character, sometimes struggling for her love to an unfaithful man but never wavering from her principles and her fight for women's rights in a difficult period of the 1st world war.

Still have 100 pages to go in this 850 page first part of three.

I realized that when you read a book of this volume, if the story is good, the characters start to grow on you. I have always loved historical fiction and I was looking forward to reading this one and so far it has not disappointed.

Also, I was not expecting so many intimate and steamy scenes and I am only 300 hundred pages in.

I finished this one a few days ago and forgot to post.
This was my first Ken Follett and I honestly did not know what to expect. Such a great story, interweaving five families and how they all were involved with WWI. A pick for sure. A real page turner BUT there are a ton of eyeroll inducing male author moments. He Ken Follett manages to introduce completely unnecessary references to penis size, orgasms boobs, pubes and masturbation when he really doesn't need to. It's a book about WWI for Pete's sake. Dude. Really?

Kaye I‘m glad you said that. I‘ve been tempted to get this several times. I won‘t now since that sorta stuff ruins a book for me. Not interested in reading about nekkid body parts. 🤢 14mo
Sace @Kaye it's such a shame. It is an incredibly engaging story but I want to smack the author for ruining some good scenes with the voice of a 14 year old with raging hormones. And it's not that I'm a prude, it's that it so obviously did NOT need to be included. Did his editor not say anything? 14mo
Amie For some reason I didn't notice this stuff in this book, but definitely noticed it in the next book and it kind of ruined it for me. After reading it I thought, it's like he wrote the book and then gave the manuscript to a 14 year old who put boobs in it wherever they could. 14mo
Sace @amie exactly! It's the kind of think that makes me wonder who he was writing for. If it's males it's pretty sad that he thinks they can't read a big, long, serious book unless there are boobies. 14mo

The first in the "Century Trilogy" by Follet. The entire 920 pages takes place during WWI and introduces several families who will be featured in the next two books. I assume. It was a bit too formulaic mini-series-ish for my taste. I probably won't continue with the series. 3/5 star

Aloisi_tribe I read books 1 and 2 and started 3. Book 2 was better than book 1 but the dialogue in book 3 was so bad I had to stop reading. His cathedral trilogy is much better. 1y

Tove_Reads Planning on doing it at the end of the year. 2y
toofondofbooks @Tove_Reads I've started the audio but may have to switch to hard copy. I'm not sure I like the narrator 2y
Tove_Reads I‘ll be reading it. Too long for an audio. 2y

Pickpick

Loved this book! It was huge and took me about three weeks but it was worth it. Tons of history with just enough juicy stuff to keep it from getting too stuffy 😉
