Thanks for the tag, @Sharpeipup

1. Europe, as Eddie Izzard once said, it's where the history comes from. 🤣 I like anything that immerses me in it's locale.
2. Not consciously, but most of the books I read have female MCs now that I think about it.

Taking a few new friends @quanners @CuriousG @Caitlin_Sheridan if you'd like to play.

#two4tuesday @TheSpineView

Sharpeipup Same on both accounts! 3y

I didn't quite reach my goal, only reading 19 books instead of 24, but it did encourage me to continue reading some of the more obscure #1001Books so I'm counting it as a win.
#ReadingEurope2020, @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle Yay! Great job! 3y
BarbaraBB I definitely consider it a win! Now on to some obscure Asian books? 3y

This was my final map of Europe for my #ReadingEurope2020. I was doing well until COvID, then the countries shut their borders down to me 🙈🤣 (in other words couldn‘t get to the books as the library was shut). I hope to complete this challenge later this year once library is able to fully open to us. Not been in a library for 9 months!

Altogether got to 21 Countries.

Thanks for hosting this great challenge @BarbaraBB and @Librarybelle

rockpools Impressive! 3y
BarbaraBB You were doing great, I hope libraries will open soon again 🤞🏽. Happy new year 🤍 3y

Crazeedi I think you did great! 3y
Librariana Library employee here, Andrew 😊 I'm so very sorry that libraries aren't available to you at the moment 😔 We are currently open for curbside service only and were *very* briefly open to the public before another spike shut us back down. It's been eerie and bizarre to wander the building with no customers! I'm still going in every day and adding titles to the catalog, so I hope your local libraries are able to do the same as well 🤞🍀⭐💜📚 3y
Librarybelle Fantastic job! My library system in Pennsylvania has been open since the summer, though that could change at any moment. But, even once we were allowed to offer services, we began with curbside pickup. Hopefully you can visit the library soon! Such scary times! 3y
Andrew65 @Librarybelle Looking at the current situation in the U.K., can‘t see us being able to go to the library until Easter at the earliest. Thanks 😊 3y
Andrew65 @Librariana Our library was briefly open but the limited hours didn‘t work with working in a school. Shut again now and they are adding books to ebooks but not that many and often not the right ones 🤣 Unfortunately not funded that well in the U.K. Seems a better situation for the libraries in the US. 3y
Librariana @Andrew65 - I'm so sorry to hear that, Andrew! 😔 Our system welcomes title recommendations (5 per month) from customers, both for digital and print acquisitions. We always have to measure suggestions against our Collection Services policies, but we do try very hard to provide as many popular materials as possible. If my memory serves me, are you a Headmaster at a school? Apologies if I've got it wrong! I imagine you're quite busy! 3y
Andrew65 @Librariana Yes, you are right, head teacher of a primary school (ages 3 - 11). Been a very busy and stressful 10 months as schools fully open. Our library online allows us to make recommendations but very few of these seem to be bought, and strange policies where e.g. have first and third book in a trilogy but not the second. I have managed to join online with about 4 libraries so that does help. 3y
Andrew65 @Librariana It must be hard to please everyone, but they then tend to buy some obscure books. 3y

melissajayne @thegreensofa I‘m glad you are joining me. I wanted to do it this past year but missed out. 3y
CarolynM I did a few countries in 2020 and plan on doing some more in 2021. I won't sign up because there's no way I'll complete the challenge, but I'll add the hashtag and tag you as I go if that's ok. 3y
melissajayne @CarolynM ok; just put it up today. 3y
JazzFeathers I did so bad in 2020, only a handful of countries. So l'm so happy that this is happening again. Will try to do a lot better. 3y

The first half of the year is almost over, and this is what I‘ve read for #ReadingEurope2020 so far

The last quarter I‘ve read:
🇷🇺 Disappearing Earth by Julia Philips
🇫🇮 The Stonecutter‘s Daughter by Tove Jansson
🇨🇿 Melmoth by Sarah Perry
🇮🇸 Moonstone by Sjon
🇵🇱 Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk

With the 8 books I read the first quarter, I‘m now up to 13 countries

Librarybelle Great job! 4y

I read 5 books In June for #readingeurope2020 - I‘m now at 39 out of 51 countries.

The countries I read in June were: Turkey, Netherlands, Switzerland, North Macedonia and Sweden.

Of the 12 left, I only have 3 on my shelves (Germany, Ireland and Romania) and can‘t find any library or Libby books that are appropriate for the others so I‘m going to have to start spending money.... 💰💰💰💰🤪

ChasingOm Wow, this is awesome! 4y
Hooked_on_books Wow, great progress! If you haven‘t used Scribd, they sometimes offer a free month and you can knock out some other countries without spending 💷 4y
Crazeedi You are doing really we'll!! 4y

Cathythoughts That‘s pretty amazing !!!!! Well done 4y
squirrelbrain Yes, I keep considering Scribd, Holly @Hooked_on_books , I shall have to have a look and see if there is anything useful on there. I‘ve also just been sent a free 30 day trial for Audible too.... best get researching! 4y
rockpools Wow - that‘s amazing! 4y
Librarybelle Amazing! Well done! 4y
squirrelbrain Thank you SO much @Hooked_on_books - found nearly everything on Scribd! (Most of them were on my list already but found a couple of substitutions where my original idea wasn‘t available) So I‘ll definitely sign up for Scribd, maybe in a few weeks so it doesn‘t clash with #bookspinbingo! 🤪 4y
Moray_Reads You're doing so well! Can I ask how many of your books have been written by women? I tried to read a book written by a woman from every European country and gave up in the end! 4y
squirrelbrain Good job I have a spreadsheet @Moray_Reads ! 🤣 Just had a quick look and, of the books I read so far 23 are by women. However, this includes some fiction set in the relevant country, not always ‘author from‘. On a quick count I think I have read 12 with a female author from the country. Let me know if you want a quick list, as some of them are the more ‘unusual‘ countries. 4y
Caroline2 Well done! You are smashing this challenge!! 👍 4y

A while back, my friend posted on Facebook that Gold Beach Books was giving away a free book to anyone who emailed them. I told them I like History and this is what they sent me. It has that wonderful old book smell. Sounds like a fascinating book.

This just arrived! My final book for #ReadingEurope2020 😲 Really struggled for San Marino and Liechtenstein so using this for both. Thanks to @squirrelbrain for bringing this book to my attention 😊
I have had so much fun doing this challenge and learnt alot!
@Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

squirrelbrain Ooh that‘s just the same as my (library) copy was. As you know I thought it was a bit odd - I think it‘s just very ‘of it‘s time‘. It was mildly amusing in places though.... 4y

A bit of a slow-down in proceedings this month, due to lack of available books (although I did manage to snaffle some from the library just before it closed so I have 6 more ready to read).

Almost halfway at 25 books out of 51....

This month‘s 4 books were:

🇨🇾 Cyprus - Othello
🇭🇺 Hungary - The Choice
🇭🇷 Croatia - Illyrian Spring
🇨🇿 Czechia - The Unbearable Lightness of Being

BarbaraBB Wow, so impressive. You‘re unbeatable 😉😘 4y
Cinfhen Ohhhh!!! Great 💜 4y

Hooked_on_books That‘s amazing! 4y
squirrelbrain Aw thanks Emma @Oryx 😘 I think there‘s only about 8 that I haven‘t got ready to read, but I‘ve identified some of those as books I can buy on Amazon, either as real books or Kindle. Of course, they‘re the most obscure as well! Albania, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Luxembourg, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia.... 😬🤷‍♀️ 4y
Oryx @squirrelbrain hmmm. I'm pretty certain I don't have any from those countries. It's a cool challenge - what a great way to read widely 4y
TrishB Great stats 👍🏻 4y
Librarybelle Awesome! 4y
Crazeedi Great job!👏🥰 4y
Caroline2 I found this one for Albania: 4y
squirrelbrain Yes, I‘d seen that too @Caroline2 - just couldn‘t find it anywhere for a reasonable cost.... 🙁 4y
squirrelbrain It certainly is a way to read widely @Oryx - I‘m reading things I wouldn‘t have considered.... and I haven‘t had *too* many bad ones (yet). I‘ve been lucky to have The Leeds Library though.... 4y

zezeki Don't know if you read this one, but I've noticed a lot of Littnes loving it. It's set in Croatia. 4y
zezeki Other translated Croatian authors are Miroslav Krleža, Daša Drndić, Dubravka Ugrešić. 4y
zezeki And for Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of the most famous authors is Meša Selimović. I'm sorry I can't be more specific about titles as I don't know what has been translated into English. 4y

julesG @squirrelbrain I've had the pleasure of spending three weeks in a rehab facility with Ms Lewitscharoff. Sitting side by side three meals a day we talked books very often.
