Such a fascinating story concerning the laws of Kanun, a set of traditional law that dictates the many aspects of life for the people living in the rural plateau of #Albania . A young man is caught up in a blood feud that has involved his family for generations. There‘s a writer & his newly wed wife visiting from the city. Their paths crossed briefly, & the couple‘s lives are forever changed. Beautifully haunting, 🔽

#ReadingEurope2020

erzascarletbookgasm (cont.) the story gives a glimpse on how the Kanun entraps the people, & the system behind the blood feuds that render blood money via tax. 4y
Librarybelle Great review! This does sound good! 4y

Blood feud is a matter of honor, a duty and the only right thing to do. The story is set on an Albanian plateau in the late '70s, and Gjorg - a young boy who took the blood is now waiting for his life to be taken away. Through Gjorg's story, the author explains the thousand-year tradition governed by Kanun - a code regulating all the aspects of life. An extremely sad story, but with its simple approach it is also extremely beautiful in ... 👇

Simona ... in weaving together stories about Kanun interpreters, its beneficiaries and its victims. Almost 5⭐️ 4y

arubabookwoman I have read This Way For The Gas, Fugitive Pieces, The Angel Maker, Broken April, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being—all excellent, except I am not a fan of Kundera. I have The Birds and The Summer Book on my shelf, so perhaps I will finally get to them for this challenge. 4y
BarbaraBB I hope you will, they are both really good. I see what you mean about Kundera, I loved this book but I was very young when I read it, it felt like he opened a new world for me at the time. I would probably read it differently nowadays. @arubabookwoman (edited) 4y
CarolynM Very helpful. Thank you.😘 4y
