Eggs @Crazeedi I agree especially about not taking things personally 👏🏻👏🏻🥰 2w
Crazeedi @Eggs oh yes, I just said that to my hubby yesterday. So many people do this when it's really nothing to do with them, or it's not a put down of them etc. Especially in the work arena when I did employee reviews or had my own review. 2w

Made myself a little reminder after finishing this one. It was such an easy read, so simply written. But I felt it was a powerful read all the same.

There were some interesting ideas, and I can see why so many people count it among the most influential self-help books. This book wasn‘t for me though, probably for the same reasons it‘s so popular—the writing and ideas are really simple and direct, which can be powerful for some and boring for others.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I think this is better in audiobook format. Peter Coyote narrates. (edited) 3mo
underground_bks @JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘ll have to try that! I really wanted to like it! 3mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 I think it‘s got value! I would def give it a listen!! I can‘t remember my thoughts on it bc this is about 8 years ago, possibly, that I listened to it. (edited) 3mo

Do any of you listen to the By the Book podcast? They absolutely hated this book, but I thought it was rather eye-opening and useful. I express my thoughts, personal anecdotes, and respond to By the Book's criticisms. Also, I would like to state that if a self-help book is doing you more harm than good, stop reading it! https://greatmorrisonmigration.wordpress.com/2019/03/14/book-review-the-four-agr...

BillyH I don‘t know I felt about this book. I loved it and hated it. The general concept and idea of the book was great, with eye opening visualizations of how we construct and make since of our reality and consciousness. I think what got me was the tone of the book and the use of words like black magic and poison. 6mo
Morr_Books @BillyH Totally understand that the tone could cause ppl problems. I think I made an active decision to focus on the concepts. I think the use of words like black magic, etc. comes directly from the Toltec belief structure. 6mo

Well, I don't know if I do agree. I picked up some interesting ideas, but I can't jump on board just yet. Maybe it was all of the generalizations ("everything will be sad"?). Maybe it's the wrong moment in my reading life. Maybe I'll come back to this later and get it and love it. Maybe. But for now, it's not for me. (I intentionally picked the one that didn't have the ?percent rating to make a so-so because I'm nice that way ?).

I not usually a big self help reader, but this one was recommended to me, and it‘s been setting on my shelf for awhile now. Not to bad for the type, and seemed fairly relevant after just reading The Beauty Myth, it talks about the agreements we make mutually with each other as a society, especially the ones we aren‘t even aware of, when we “are domesticated”, that are harming us and replacing them with better agreements like doing our best.

RebL This was recommended/given to me to read too, but it never seems to climb my TBR. 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @RebL Honestly, if I wasn‘t looking for 2 short TBR‘s today to finish my #MountTBR it would probably have been sitting on my shelf for another few years 😂... but it was a short read, interesting, and now I can take it off my shelf! 9mo

The book has been around for nearly 20 years, but I only got around to reading it recently. Having some indigenous roots in Mexico, I was curious about this “Toltec wisdom.” There is a lot of profundity in the simple agreements; they‘re not always easy to follow, but good reminders. Worth the quick read to help recenter your mind.

I mean, it wasn't a bad book at all, and parts of it really resonated with me. Lots of good ideas and probably a wonderful way to live. It just wasn't great? idk 😬

Eyelit Good to know. My book club is reading it in August and when I first heard about it I was less than thrilled (partly because I don't like the person who suggested it, which makes me an asshole, I know). I'm still going to give it a chance 😁 2y

My gosh. The writing was so poorly executed that it made each page I turned painful. I can honestly say that these types of books are generally not my lane, but a friend gifted it to me as his favorite book so I read it. I opened the books and two hours later closed it having finished the short read. My first thought was, "well, that was terrible." Don't waste your time - just read the front flap.

A pick with reservations. There is some beautiful stuff in this book, and some much-needed messages. There were a few things that really bothered me, though. The power of words is one thing. I am a huge believer in saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Review cont'd in comments.

Krisjericho But to treat them like there is truly a magic in them that can cause someone who doesn't have cancer to get cancer because you say they look like they have cancer and they believe you so they get cancer? No. There were a few things like this that irritated me even more than they should have because there is so much other great stuff in here. 3y
