The Secret Place | Tana French
An absolutely mesmerizing read. . . . Tana French is simply this: a truly great writer. Gillian FlynnDetective Stephen Moran has been waiting for his chance to join Dublins Murder Squad when sixteen-year-old Holly Mackey arrives in his office with a photo of a popular boy whose body was found at a girls boarding school a year earlier. The photo had been posted at The Secret Place, the schools anonymous gossip board, and the caption says I KNOW WHO KILLED HIM. Stephen joins with Detective Antoinette Conway to reopen the casebeneath the watchful eye of Hollys father, fellow detective Frank Mackey. With the clues leading back to Hollys close-knit group of friends, to their rival clique, and to the tangle of relationships that bound them all to the murdered boy, the private underworld of teenage girls turns out to be more mysterious and more dangerous than the detectives imagined.

Getting ready for a family picture! Listening to this one from French‘s Dublin Murder Squad series, and while it‘s not my favorite, there are some strangely supernatural elements that make it feel perfect for Halloween 🎃

I very much liked this one. High school was awful and this captured that intense desperation for me. The detective was very likable. The bit of supernatural weirdness was odd, and for me it was never properly defined whether that was real or not, but maybe that was ok? Any A+

Gilded youth in boarding school angst as Dublin Murder Squad‘s Antoinette Conway and Stephen Moran partner up for one day to follow up on a clue in the death of a golden schoolboy one year ago. Conway gives no quarter, Moran is all about using this chance to move onto the squad. Heady, secret, and dangerous teenage world seems impossible to parse. Don‘t think I would have survived high school now. Now for French‘s next one🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Experimenting with tracking my reading with the Bookly app. I love reading to the sound of "light rain". The actual weather is another story. It hasn't stop snowing since yesterday morning. Current temp is 2 degrees with -15 wind chill. Back to my book and gentle rain! #snowday #readallday

First book of the year & one down for #Booked2019! I love Tana French. This mystery takes place at an expensive boarding school for girls. The atmosphere is intense. The girls are at once predatory and dangerous and insecure children in too much makeup. The twists keep coming until the very end.

#FemaleDetective

Cinfhen Is this a stand alone or part of her Dublin Murder Squad series??? It sounds really good 13mo
whatsthEStorey @Cinfhen it‘s number five in the series, which I did not realize until I was reading it! There were a few parts where I could tell I was missing some back story, but overall it didn‘t affect my reading. This is going in a VERY unexpected direction- different than her previous books. Not sure how I feel about it, but I‘m still enjoying it 📚. Interested to see where it‘s all headed.

vivastory This is my least favorite of her books, but she did some interesting things with it 1y
KatieanneF @vivastory it would be hard to top Broken Harbor or The Likeness- both which I loved so much. I‘m sort of confused by this one- even as its narrated; half first person and half semi-omniscient. Her writing is still beautiful, of course 1y

Laughterhp @alisonrose Oh no... I didn‘t really like the last one. is it worse than ? 1y
alisonrose @Laughterhp Hmmm not sure, I liked Faithful Place a decent amount, wasn‘t my fave but it was a good read for me. My issue with The Secret Place is that she introduces this very weird bit of a supernatural element to the story and it felt really out of place to me, and was also never explained and just ended up being ignored by the end. 1y

French continues to reinvent her mysteries & with more mixed results in book 5 of her Dublin Murder Squad. This is my least favorite of hers, with at least two qualifiers. 1) Tana French is quite possibly my favorite living mystery author & a weaker publication is still worthwhile. 2) I had trouble managing expectations as her previous book, "Broken Harbor" is tied with "The Likeness" for favorites. There are three noticeable elements that ?

vivastory distinguish this one from prior volumes. The supernatural/paranormal events are not as ambiguous as in her others. Rather than use a character from her previous book, she reached back two volumes to Faithful Place for her narrator. I am not going to reveal the third element, as it could potentially spoil the plot. However, I will say that it has to do with the time period in which the case is solved. It is this third strategy that I felt 👇 1y
vivastory made this a somewhat disappointing read. If, like me, you love Tana French it's worth reading. Try to manage your expectations, especially after Broken Harbor. 1y
MicheleinPhilly This is my least favorite of hers. All of that “teen speak” made me 🤮. 1y

Holly is Frank Mackey's (important character in The Likeness & narrator of Faithful Place) daughter. Secret Place occurs several years after the events of those in Faithful Place & at several points Holly says something that reminds Moran of her father. This reply is 💯 Frank Mackey.

Another great book from Tana French. I liked the shifting perspectives in this one between that of Detective Moran present day following up on a new lead from a year old murder and that of the group of teen girls the case surrounds in the period leading up to the murder.
Pictured is from early in the book, and I loved the discussion surround Becca's question, "What's an exfoliator?" And Julia's answer!

I listened to the audio and liked both narrators, but I did lose interest a bit more in the girls‘ voice. One of the narrators (a male) voices the parts told from the POV of Stephen. The female narrator told the story from the girls‘ points of view in the time leading up to the murder, and after the murder – the bit of time until Holly goes to Stephen with the card. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Overall, it was good, but not nearly as good as the other books in the series to this point, in my opinion. I do love listening to the Irish accents on the audio, though 2y

Another great one by Tana French. I really liked how she switched back and forth between past and present. The way it was presented really makes the reader have to think about what the conclusion will be, and it is by no means obvious. It also reminded me how AWFUL being a teenager can be, and how glad I am that cell phones and texting didn‘t exist when I was in high school 😂 4🌟🌟🌟🌟

A year ago a teenager was bludgeoned to death on the grounds of an expensive girls school. The case has moved to the back burner till a student brings new evidence to a cold case detective. This novel has two timelines - following the teen drama that lead to murder - following the detectives trying to untangle all the teen drama. My only complaint is I found it a bit long and I did get a bit annoyed at all the teenage angst. 👍👍

Some crusty baguette, chicken soup and a good murder mystery. 😋 Tana French‘s series all feature the Dublin Murder Squad but change to feature a new detective each novel. I really wish I‘d read this one— the first novel featuring the duo Antoinette Conway and Stephen Moran— before I read the novel that‘s from Antoinette‘s perspective. I love Moran‘s voice (duh, he‘s “likable”) and I like Antoinette more, seeing her from his perspective.
